They could have made it right, but they did not.
DO NOT RENT THIS HOUSE. I wanted to give this house a decent review but I cannot because of what happened the last night we were there. We were awakened at 3am by the house's PIERCINGLY LOUD fire alarms malfunctioning. I called Cedar Lodge and they told me that they could not get anyone there until 7am to turn them off. After many more calls they ended up getting someone there to turn them off around 6am. So, from 3am-6am my family had to endure the alarm ringing through the entire house.
It was terrible.
I assumed we would get our money refunded for that night. But they did not refund our money. They offered to refund the night if we would be out by 11:00 am which was the normal time. I said some of my family had only gone back to sleep after the alarm was disconnected. Could we be out by 12:00 pm. We were told if we left by 1:00pm we could get a 1/3 of a day refund and if we left by 11:00 am we could have a one night refund. I told them I was not happy but would stay until 1pm.
I read in other reviews that this has happened to other guests. It was also clear that it was an issue because some of the alarms had wires coming out of them from what looked like other people trying to disable them. Do not risk staying at this house. It is not worth it.
Oh also, it does not say in the description (and no one prepared us) that the house is up a driveway that is terribly steep and at the edge of a steep drop off. It has big bumps in it so even in our four wheel drive SUV we needed to go fast enough to be able to get up the hill but also slow enough not to slide back. There is a hairpin turn at the top of the drive that you need to navigate very carefully. Be ready!
There is also no book of instructions for the house. You are on your own. We didn't know until day 4 that there was a washer and drier because it was hidden in an upstairs bedroom that had a stuck door that we assumed was locked. We only found it when we were desperately trying to find a fuse box in an attempt to turn off the alarm.
The house is spacious and around six miles to the west of the 140 entrance to Yosemite. There is no cellular service or wi-fi from the house and the hard wired phone does not permit long distance calls. So, plan on not being able to reach work or family while there.
This was a great place to stay for our 4 families. Lots of room for everyne. Location was good for our daily visits to Yosemite. Some suggestions for the future: 1. Labeling the many light switches so you don't have to try everyone (and there are lots) to turn the lights on and off, 2. If you have 12+ people there, you need more pots and pans (plenty of dishes) 3. Master suite bed could use a different mattress. It was way too hard.
Fabulous home. Our 3 daughters & families stayed 8 days & loved it. Very spacious living areas, well built so even with 6 kids the bedrooms were quiet. 3 teen boys loved their hide out in the loft. I brought air mattresses for them. Family with 2 babies had lower room ( baby monitor worked) so at 6 am they didn’t wake us & we could play noisy games at night. Lovely kitchen, 2 dining areas plus we ate all dinners outside on deck, one long table for 12 or more & newish bar-bq. There you could hear the rushing Merced & they had deco lights hanging all around. Beautiful!
A second stream met the Merced right below us & the teens caught trout. . Loved our stay Thank you! Listing confusing on VRBO better than expected
El Portal House
The property was large and well located in close proximity to Yosemite. There were plenty of bedrooms for our group of 9. Negatives: I sent an email 4 days prior asking for confirmation on the check-in process and got no response. There was an ant problem on the kitchen countertop both days. The fire alarm battery died such that it beeped all night long the first night; that was just bad luck, not blaming the owner, but FYI that the battery needs to be replaced. I tried but did not have the right size battery.
Cool house with great “potential”
We were 3 families of four visiting from Texas. We’ve stayed at many VRBOs in various locations. This house had great character and but need needs some serious TLC.
Location close to park gates
Large home, great for our 3 families
Lots of space, cool layout
Cool outdoor shower
Three decks and great outside seating space
Lots of character and accents
Only one burner works on stove
Master shower had poor water pressure
AC issues in one bedroom
Missing necessities (paper towels, dish soap, cloth dish towels, kitchen sponges)
Cabinets sticky, loose, or broken throughout the house
*** electric key expires the MORNING u check out - don’t get locked out***
I hope the owners TLC.
Very nice home
There was an ant problem, not huge. The house was very conveniently located near the western entrance of Yosemite. It was clean and had plenty of amenities. A fire pit would have been perfect for s’mores but it was clean and well kept. We had a great time exploring the valley and hiking and biking. Would def book this house again.
