Great property! Private and secluded area. Pool is nice and is refreshing. Everything was clean. The kitchen is well stocked and we used the grill several nights.

Probably our favorite VRBO ever. The rare property that's much better in real life than photos can capture. Amazing views of Coral Bay and the BVI in the distance; very nice home with everything you need. It's the kind of place where you may just want to load up with some groceries and not leave for the duration of your stay. But if you want to venture out, there are some great little places to eat/drink in the Coral Bay area, and some amazing beaches a short drive away. We liked nearby Salt Pond beach, and highly recommend the Ram Head trail/hike. More about the house: really nice saltwater pool that's not tiny, a separate bedroom area with AC (and its own bathroom, in addition to the bathroom in the main living area). And the hosts (both Janet, who we corresponded with online, and Jalayne, who's here on the island) were fantastic. For a couple's getaway, I'm not sure you can do better than this place. I suspect we'll be back.Thanks for having us.

The host, the greeter, and the home! Excellent pre-trip communications and very helpful info when we arrived by our greeter.The home was so serene with amazing views of Coral Bay. The frogs and insects played for us each night which added to the ambiance. We were able to experience most of the very casual dining options very close by and enjoyed each one. We were able to find good meats and other foods at the nearby markets, especially calabash market, so we cooked in a couple of nights on the very new grill. The roads in St John and in particular, the driveway up to the home were somewhat terrifying (got less terrifying each day) but doable as many others do it!The hiking and beaches close by kept us active and loving the beautiful waters.

St. John USVI Getaway

It was a very pleasant, easy experience that gave us a superb, relaxing getaway! It was the perfect little retreat for a couple to just be able to enjoy each other and the beauty of St. John and the USVI! We could not have asked for a better location or accommodations. A truly special property.

Perfect small villa in Coral bay

This cottage has stunning views and is cooled by fantastic breezes in the open air manner of older St John villas. Exquisitely built and well supplied. Coral Bay is the quiet side of the island but adequate grocery stores and restaurants for us. Beds were comfortable .

Most amazing villa ever

Mooncottage is hands down the most amazing place we have ever seen. The view is indescribable. The villa is totally private and zin like. The communication and scheduling process is also amazing. Word’s don’t do this villa justice. When we go back to St. John we will definitely be staying here again!!!

Great home on the hill

We came for our honeymoon. Amazing house with tons of privacy. The drive up is steep but so is everything on St. John. Coral Bay was great. We rented a dinghy for the day which I would highly recommend. Lime Out bar on the water was awesome. Everything restaurant wise closes around 8 so plan to eat early. We would definitely come back and stay here again. We loved it.

Great anniversary spot

This place is perfect for any honeymoon or anniversary trip. My wife and I came for our one year anniversary and had a great experience. The view from the pool and and terrace is unbelievable, especially in the morning for sunrise. Right down the hill are a bunch of little restaurants and bars, we loved Skinny Legs and Rhumb Lines. Also would recommend renting a dinghy right in Coral Bay and taking it out to Limeout for lunch. The host Janet and the on-island host/greeter Jalayne were both super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful with any questions or needs we had. Just make sure you rent a car with 4WD and pack some bug spray.

Dreamy couples escape

We could not have had a more intimate, romantic, secluded and connected to nature experience for our wedding/honeymoon week! Words cannot describe the beauty and breathtaking views of Mooncottage! Communication was easy and prompt on every detail before, during, and after arrival. Everything from grocery delivery to private chefs was arranged and executed without a hiccup. We will never forget our special time at Mooncottage and the feeling it gave us of being just the two of us in our own tropical paradise.

The most beautiful view

This property has by far the most beautiful view on St. John island. It is not easy to get to, but worth the view. I would caution that the villa is quite porous to the out of doors. A plugged outdoor shower led to rain flooring our bedroom floor during the night, but the property manager took care of it the next day. Overall we had a great time

Perfect Getaway!

Mooncottage was the perfect setting for our recent attempt to get away from it all and enjoy something special. The photos and reviews are all true. It’s a beautiful setting and very secluded and private. It’s the perfect place to relax, regroup and reconnect! As with any week long stay there were a couple of very minor issues that popped up but the property manager, Bob, was always immediately available to sort things out. Also be aware that the ride up to the cottage may be a bit bumpy for some but totally worth it once you get there. All in all it was a great experience and we highly recommend it!!

It's great to hear you had a wonderful time! We're always so glad when our guests get into the natural beauty of this special spot. And, good news for all of those who hate our bumpy road, the owners association (basically St John doesn't help us with this, it's up to the property owners to fix the road) ... we have at great expense and effort made the road as smooooooth as can be. Obviously, only being partially paved it is subject to changes with seasonal rains, but the owner's association is committed to keeping our road in as good of condition as possible.

Celebration Stay

After staying home for the last two years my wife and I needed to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and her 60th Birthday! We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. A spectacular property boosting a beautiful view of Coral Bay. The pool was a added bonus after a long day snorkeling or hiking. The trade winds kept us cool day and night. The local wildlife came to visit daily. Frogs, Lizards, Hermit crabs, and our two bird friends Twitter and Hashtag. They appeared outside the door or on the pool deck at dawn and dinner looking for some crackers and a dish of water. It was a wonderful celebration!

Mooncottage is even BETTER than you can imagine!

Mooncottage was perfect from the very beginning! Brian was super easy to work with on the front end and there are NO words to describe how amazing the property and experience staying at Mooncottage was. Bob handles everything once you are at Mooncottage and he is equally wonderful! The view is spectacular; the house has everything you could possibly dream of and the relaxing calm that we felt being there is indescribable. This was our first trip to St. John and we were spoiled! We cannot imagine staying in Cruz Bay now that we've been over to Coral Bay and experienced this true one of a kind vacation. Brian provides towels, beach bags, snorkeling equipment, full kitchen, grill, five star accommodations all in the most natural and wonderful setting. The reviews and comments seem ridiculous, I know. You may even wonder for a moment if friends aren't just writing these reviews. But having just spent a magical ten days at Mooncottage, all I can say is--it is true and well worth it!!

On the Origin of Species

I really wanted to give this property 4 stars simply because I found it hard to believe that all the previous reviewers were being completely honest when every single one of them gave it 5 stars. But it deserves five stars. It is a luxury villa at one with its natural surroundings. Brian literally carved the homesite out of the mountainside. And mountainside it is. The initial ride up the dirt roads with the super-steep switchbacks is initially hair-raising, but you quickly get used to it. And when you look out at that vista, it feels as though it was created just for you. You can't really see another property in sight unless you use the binoculars. We only ate out once at Sweet Plantains, which was superb, and we are foodies with high expectations. The kitchen in the cottage is so well equipped that we mostly chose to purchase fresh local seafood and cook in. We used the outside gas grill quite a bit as well. Brian has made a deliberate attempt to create a spiritual place of relaxation and he has succeeded mightily. The flora of the grounds (which are illuminated at night) made us feel like we were in the rainforest section of the U.S. Botanic Gardens. The outside shower, the fish pond, the hammock, the windchimes, and the constant breeze blowing through create an other-worldly place. Like before civilization. We expected Darwin to walk around the corner any moment. We also appreciated the carbon footprint-less-ness of the place. All of the water used is collected rainwater, which is solar heated. Solar generates the electricity as well as runs the pool. It all worked beautifully. The water for drinking is triple filtered and was delicious. We snorkeled at six beaches and saw so many amazing creatures. But we always hurried to get back to Mooncottage and just be there. That's my best advice to anyone reading this-just be there.

Heaven on Earth

Our day of travel is ridiculous coming from Minneapolis. We started our 17 hour day flying from MSP to Miami and then Miami to St. Thomas. We rented our car on St. Thomas and drove like crazy to make it to the car ferry in Red Hook - although that, in itself, is an ordeal, they know what they are doing. We headed across unusually rough seas (locals confirmed this, as well as the super smooth return trip) and were greeted on the other side by the house manager. We followed her through the winding & steep roads of St. John to a lovely market at the bottom of the hill from the home - there we picked up food with our iPhone flashlights since power was lost on the island (we were told this happens about 3 times a year, but only stays off for 30 minutes max). As we started the drive up to Mooncottage, I thought, "what have we done?" We got up there, as the sun was setting and tried to do a walk-through and understand everything with no power. After the house manager left, we grabbed a glass of wine, lit candles, and sat down on the veranda, EXHAUSTED. Anxiety was starting to set in and I thought, "what happens if the power doesn't come back on?!?" As we sat there, quiet, both wondering what decision we had made, we were inundated with the sounds of tree frogs chirping (beautiful sound). All of a sudden the lights popped on, the fans started to swirl and we did a happy dance. With all that, I can honestly say that I would do DOUBLE the travel to return to Mooncottage. It's better than the pictures. At least 100 times during the week, my husband said, "We have NEVER stayed in a place that we had a tough time leaving for the beach." Each day, we'd have breakfast and decide which beach to go to and we found ourselves dragging those mornings later and later (to the point we couldn't find parking for beaches a few of the days). This place is PURE magic. It is so private. The view is unreal. The attention to detail through every facet of this house is simply remarkable. You can FEEL the love and energy that was put into this tranquil home. This is a positive place. It was the best week of our lives. We never wanted to leave - we ate several dinners in, too, simply because we adored being there & with each other so very much. I can't say enough about this magical place that sits high atop the mountain, looking out on east end and Tortola ... there truly are no words, one must simply go to experience heaven on earth.

Coral Bay Paradise

After staying on the island and in Great Cruz Bay and Coral Bay we much preferred Coral Bay. It is much quieter and the views from this villa were spectacular. It takes an extra 15 mins from the main road to get up the mountain to the villa. It is not a great distance to travel but because the road is rough you have to drive extra slow. There are many steps to the villa as well but it is worth the extra trouble for the view. Plenty of parking at the bottom of the steps and plenty of outdoor lighting. We loved being able to stream movies and tv shows from the new Roku and the kitchen appliances were awesome and the kitchen was well stocked. There was a coffee maker and filters and some essential condiments and seasonings in the fridge. The water is filtered so we just washed and refilled our water bottles. There were several pool noodles which we used when snorkeling and really comfy outdoor loungers and chairs. There was also 2 beach chairs, 2 coolers and snorkel equipment. This villa includes two outdoor showers and two indoor showers and we used both! The on-island property manager stays nearby and is very easy to communicate with via text message. There are three really nice markets in Coral Bay. You must eat at Skinny Legs! Best burgers, margs and Key Lime pie! Thursday night trivia night at Caribbean Oasis was fun. We missed Open Mike night at Ms. Lucy’s (on Thursday nights I think??) but heard it was great so find out before you go what night. They are only serving lunch Wednesday, Thursday, Friday right now I think. Best to call before making plans. We visited January of 2021. We had lunch there and it was very good. Tuesday night was live music at Pizzabar in Paradise where Colleen served us a delicious pie. We tried the pizza at Salty Mongoose too and it was very good. While staying around near Cruz Bay we chartered Catzilla with Love City Excursions and had lunch at Lime Out. We got there on a Saturday about 10 mins before they were to open at 11 and managed to get a lilly pad. There is a guy at Crabby’s Water Sports that can take you by boat and stay with you for an hour I believe. I am not sure if you can rent a kayak to get there or not. I wish it was easier to get to Lime Out because we would like to have eaten there again. Only complaint about our week in Honeymoon Villa was that pool was too cold to use much and we kept having to get rid of our millipede friends that wanted to be indoors with us. Everything else was perfection!!

The pool is solar heated and January is the 'coldest' month of the year for USVI with average high of 78 degrees. I'm sorry it wasn't warmer for your stay. Beautiful property! Felt like you we're in the middle of the rainforest. Stunning views, great location, completely private, and very romantic. Perfect spot for our honeymoon! St. John is open post Covid and now is a great time to go!!!

Spectacular view

Moon cottage is a spectacular place that is one of a kind. Brian and the people working with him were a pleasure to deal with.

Moon Cottage

Moon Cottage was absolutely stunning! We had such an amazing time relaxing here and enjoying the beautiful views. The cottage is lovely- so nicely decorated and laid out. We can’t wait to go back!

Fantastic views!

The views are really impressive, and you get to take advantage of the breezes while liming on the deck or in the pool. This is the kind of place that makes your heart ache to leave!

A sanctuary

In March we stayed at Mooncottage for 7 days. The setting is tranquil and offers space to let go of time, clothing, and any ‘to dos’. It is simply lovely - a perfect get away with incredible views and close enough to restaurants and beaches. We would give it 5 stars except one of the toilets wasn’t working, the microwave didn’t work, and we had to make the bed when we arrived - Minor things in comparison to the beautiful and very cozy home. Brian’s manager was very responsive to our questions and concerns. We had a wonderful stay. Brian has created a lush sanctuary and welcoming home.
