À propos de cet hébergement

Step back in time at Clarence's Place retreat, our little farm in the woods.

We invite you to stay at our little farm in the woods. It is a quiet and serene setting in the town of Aurora, Florence County, a very rural area in northern Wisconsin. We have over 100 acres, which you are welcome to explore. In the winter, we have sleds and sledding hills; there are always a couple sets of snowshoes available for your use. Weather permitting, you will be our guests on a complimentary horse drawn sleigh or wagon ride, which winds down through the fields and virgin timber forrest. There is a fire pit in the woods, which is a stop on our winter rides. We also have a fire pit near the house which is available for your use during seasons when burning is permitted. Our working farm is adjacent to Clarence's Place and you are welcome to observe and/or participate in activities which are going on there, so pack your "play clothes" if that is of interest to you. We make maple syrup in the early spring (guests receive a complimentary bottle); calves arrive a little later in the spring. We have cows, horses, mules and a donkey named Clover. There is a pond where the little "peeps" (frogs) can be heard singing. Wildlife is common here and we can always count on deer and turkey sightings. Eagles are not uncommon. From your windows you will see horses grazing in the nearby fields.
In addition to farm activities, we have an abundance of beautiful water falls in the county. There are also many lakes for swimming and fishing.; You can "float" the oxbow on the Pine River, which is about a 10 minute drive from Clarence's Place. Bring your own tube or rentals are available at the landing. The float is free. There is great trout fishing on the area's many wild rivers and streams. In winter, we have nearby downhill ski hills as well as cross country ski trails. We boast of many fine restaurants in the area.
You'll take a step back in time when you walk into the 3 bedroom, one bath home, which we refer to as the "Retreat at Clarence's Place". It is a very peaceful home. Although it has a large TV and WiFi, you may find that you prefer to relax, pick up a book to read or just sit on the porch listening to the birds sing. We are often frustrated when we visit "museum homes" with rope barriers, as we can only look into the rooms. In the Retreat, you may go right in and make yourself comfortable. The house was built in 1920 and is much the same as it was 100 years ago. We encourage you to use and enjoy the antiques which you will find throughout the home. There are furniture, dishes, magazines (some dating back to the late teens of the 20th century), which we think you'll be interested in.
We are sorry, but this home is not suitable for those who have trouble getting around. There are steps to get in and out of the house, as well as a second floor. The tub/shower is an antique clawfoot. The downstairs bedroom has a queen size bed. One bedroom upstairs has a queen and a twin, while the other has two twin beds.
all bedding is furnished, as well as dishes, pots and pans, coffee pot, blender, microwave, tv and wifi. You'll have to wash your dishes in the antique cast iron sink. There is no washer and dryer but a laundromat is available in nearby Kingsford, MI.

Clean, Quiet, Private Throwback with Modern Updates

We enjoyed our stay. The house and property are very well kept. The owners have the house set up to feel like a '40's farmhouse, yet also provide modern conveniences like AC, good internet, shower, comfortable beds, etc. The owners were very friendly and responsive to requests. We enjoyed learning about their life on the farm. Highly recommended.

Like stepping into history but with Oatmeal Cookies!

Imagine the warm and cozy feeling of stepping into your grandmother’s home in 1930. Now imagine the same place but it is immaculately clean, has abundant hot water, soft towels and brand new mattresses. Our party of 6 all remarked this home had incredible attention to detail from the nightlight placement to the treads on the stairs. We were welcomed with freshly baked oatmeal raisin cookie and a jar of maple syrup that was processed on site. Sandy answered every question and provided detailed directions. Bob gave us a tour of the Maple syrup operation. Deer and wild turkeys provided the entertainment from our front row seats on the porch. Thank you so much Sandy and Bob and thank you too to Clarence who lived here as a beloved neighbor for 98 years.

Restful Retreat

Clarence's Place is a peaceful place. It was a place where recharging was easy. Our memories of old were rekindled as we immersed ourselves amongst the pieces of history that are so thoughtfully placed throughout the home. A ride in a 1932 Ford and a carriage ride capped-off a wonderful stay. Thank you, Sandy and Bob!

Step back in time

It was an amazing place and the old antiques in the house were great. But there were modern conveniences like air conditioning and a nice shower in an antique tub. We also enjoyed the wildlife with deer and turkeys in the yard and the horse drawn carriage ride.

Winter wonderland

Another great adventure at Clarence's Place. What a peaceful and fun way to bring in the new year.! This year we brought our new addition, a little baby girl, just 2 months old. Dad and the older girls went sledding every day except Sunday when we went to church and visited my wife's grandpa. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you Bob and Sandy for a wonderful time. God Sul! With great joy the Wagner family.

Hallmark Christmas

We called it our Hallmark Christmas weekend. It was absolutely perfect. The vintage home, the sleigh ride, sledding, snowshoeing, bonfires at night. It was wonderful way to ring in the Christmas season. Bob and Sandy were wonderful to work with and everyone had an absolutely wonderful time. But highly recommend. And we will definitely be back again.

Great, relaxing stay!!!

Bob and Sandy have done an amazing job making this house special and unique. Even though it’s over a century old, it’s very very clean and lots of nice little touches and amenities that made our stay special. The farmhouse is quiet, clean, and peaceful. I think we spent the first 2 hours of our arrival just looking at and handling all the antiques. It really is a time capsule. So many things reminded me of things my grandma had in her house when I was growing up many moons ago. A true blast from the past! Deer and turkeys were plentiful and the front porch was the best place to sit in the morning to relax. Overall just an awesome stay and very comfortable place out in the country.

Refreshing and relaxing; the BEST escape

Our family of five stayed Dec. 25th thru 29th 2021. Clarence's Place is the perfect getaway! There's so much to explore inside and outside. We found our stay very relaxing and fun. We loved the super comfortable beds and the splendidly soft blankets. The sledding hills were great! The kids had so much fun going again and again. Sandy and Bob even provided sleds for us to use! We also explored the fascinating farm and surrounding woods with snow shoes that Bob and Sandy kindly allowed us to use. The sleigh ride was perfect and peaceful. There are countless conversation pieces in the home and on the property that brought us closer by discussing and pondering them. Bob showed us their operation for making delicious maple syrup. We bought some to take home as souvenirs. Thank you, Bob and Sandy for bringing back old memories of our grandparents and for a time of refreshing and renewal. Our stay was so much better than any hotel. Clarence's Place is charming, peaceful, and the BEST escape.

Refreshing retreat, unmatched hospitality

My family and I enjoyed 8 days at Clarence's Place in July. This gem has a peace about it, which, coupled with Bob and Sandy's hospitality, made for a truly refreshing retreat from our city lives. The house was a delight to stay in and met all our needs. We enjoyed all the expressions of Bob and Sandy's hospitality, from Sandy's fresh-baked cookies upon our arrival to Bob's buggy ride and horseback riding instruction. The land is all fields and woods, full of deer, turkeys, and a few sandhill cranes. No street lights out there, so the stars and Milky Way shine bright. We spent quite a bit of time with Sandy and Bob, just chatting, hearing stories about Clarence, and learning the history of the place. This is what made Clarence's Place special for us - connecting with the folks who live here. They shared their love of this place with us, showed us around the property, and generally gave us a taste of what it would be like living in rural Wisconsin. We are hoping to come back!

Lovely Little Country House

What a beautiful and peaceful place! The property was amazing and the house was so cute and made us feel like we were staying in a 1940s house. We saw wild turkeys, lots of deer and the horses. We took a carriage ride with Bob and that was a huge hit with the kids. Their maple syrup is delicious and it was so neat to have Bob walk us through the process of how they make it. We really enjoyed our first visit to Wisconsin!

Clean, Quiet, Comfortable Jump back to the 1940s

I have stayed at several other rentals. This rental was better than any of those. It was cleaner, quieter and just as comfortable as the best of them. Clean: It is difficult to make an old farm house look this clean. It even felt clean. Quiet: There are no neighbors within several hundred yards. We did not hear any human sound other than a very rare car passing by. Comfortable: The mattress I was on was great. Temperature was easy to control. The modern updates such as central air/ heat, TV and Wifi all worked well. If you are needing to do some work ( I hope you don't), the Wifi speed was outstanding for an isolated location. I recorded 35 Mbs and ping of 8 ms. Bob and Sandy were gracious and helpful. Not intrusive. We spent more time with them than I would have expected because we enjoyed their company so much. Bob gave me a tour of how he makes maple syrup and also gave us all buggy rides in his antique buggy. Sandy was driving around in her old Model A. Some of us got a ride. One mourning we made pancakes with Bob's complimentary maple syrup. These were as good as any I have had. One early AM I stood in the yard listening and watching birds. I identified 7 or 8 different species in 15-20 minutes. We later saw a hawk and crane. A Doe and her fawn were regulars in the back yard. This stay felt like being in a museum where you could touch and hold the items. The house had an old tube radio (1940s?) that worked. There were vintage working Stove and fridge and a vintage 1960s "entertainment center" with vinyl records like we had when I was in high school. Everything works. There were several old magazines and newspapers from those eras. We hope to spend time here again.

Wooded Hideaway

Clarence's Place was like stepping back in time with all of the modern amenities you've come to rely on. The house is very clean and very well cared for. The hosts have thought of pretty much everything, and they are very responsive when you have a question or concern. This location is a bit back in the woods away from everything which makes it very quiet and private. My niece went out to get something from the car around dusk and scared away some deer that were wandering the yard. We didn't want to leave! Note: the internet speed isn't super fast, so keep that in mind if you're a high-wifi use group. It was fine for searching for things to do and using phone apps, but deleting e-mails from a remote server took more time than it usually would.

We are a couple who are retired from the underground utility construction company we started in 1991. We raise beef cattle on our small farm, which is adjacent to Clarence's Place. We enjoy traveling. We have 4 children, 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. We love to spend time with our grandchildren and have had many great adventures with them.
Bob has had horses all his life and participates in horse pulling contests. He also uses them for hunting in Colorado and sometimes goes pleasure riding at home.
Sandy enjoys cooking, swimming, gardening and doing just about anything that's fun!
We are active members of our church and enjoy spending time with our church family.

Pourquoi avoir choisi cet hébergement ?

Clarence was my cousin and dear friend to both Bob and I. He was a bachelor with a unique little farm in the woods across the field from our house. He was a very dear man, loved by everyone who knew him. He passed away in 2019 at the age of 98. We had the privilege to purchase half of his farm. His house is as near to when it was built in the 1920's as you can get. We enjoy working to preserve the farm. We make maple syrup in the spring, give horse drawn sleigh rides in the winter and wagon rides in the fall. We love the serenity of the place and believe others will be blessed by it, too.
