With ample parking at the side of the house for up to two cars, your stay will be both comfortable and convenient, allowing easy access to local wineries, nearby attractions and everything the Coal River Valley has to offer.
Just a short stroll from your front door, Richmond’s boutique cafes, artisan shops, historical sites, and friendly village atmosphere await. Whether you’re soaking in the history, relaxing in the garden, or exploring Tasmania’s renowned food and wine region, this charming home provides the perfect base for an unforgettable stay.
The story of this special home begins around 1823, when the original timber structure was built by convict labourers as part of the works supporting the construction of the now-iconic Richmond Bridge — the oldest stone bridge still in use in Australia, completed between 1823 and 1825.
Sometime after the bridge’s completion, between 1825 and 1839, the land was granted to one of the very convicts who helped bring the bridge to life. In 1841, it's believed that he went on to build the main sandstone portion of the house that still stands today — a lasting legacy of craftsmanship, perseverance, and Tasmania’s early colonial history.
Guest Access:
Guests have full access and private use of the entire property.
The Neighborhood:
Richmond is one of Tasmania’s most charming and historically significant villages, nestled in the heart of the Coal River Valley wine region and just a 25-minute drive from Hobart. Steeped in history and character, this beautifully preserved Georgian town offers a unique glimpse into colonial Australia — with cobbled laneways, convict-built architecture, and a relaxed village atmosphere.
At the centre of it all is the iconic Richmond Bridge, the oldest stone bridge in Australia, built by convicts in 1825 and still in use today. The Richmond Gaol, another convict-era landmark, offers a fascinating insight into Tasmania's penal past. Stroll the streets and you’ll find heritage-listed cottages, churches, and buildings that transport you to another time.
Richmond isn’t just about history — it’s also a vibrant destination for food, wine, and art lovers. The village is surrounded by boutique wineries, including some of the best cool-climate vineyards in the state. There are cosy cafes, artisan shops, traditional sweet stores, and weekend markets offering local produce and handmade goods.
Ideal for walking, Richmond invites slow exploration. Wander down to the riverbank, picnic in the park, or take a scenic drive through the surrounding countryside. The peaceful pace and old-world charm make it a favourite for couples, families, and anyone looking to unwind in a truly picturesque setting.
Whether you're here for the heritage, the wine, or just to relax, Richmond offers a perfect blend of the past and the present in one unforgettable destination.
