Your hosts and how we got here:
My wife Marisa and I are a couple of 50-somethings from metro Detroit who really had never explored Michigan's thumb until a weekend trip with friends about 8 years ago. It was the thumb's yearly "Yard Sale Trail," coordinated every August along M25 from Algonac to Port Austin. Traffic, normally excellent on M25, is slow on this weekend as bargain hunters fill driveways, yards and barns. If you can crane and contort your neck long enough as you drive by, you too can find something you've been searching for your whole life, or at least that's what I was hoping, lol. We had always enjoyed antiquing (at the time I had a booth at an antique mall) and doing it with the company of our good friends was something we were really looking forward to. As it turned out this weekend in the thumb would turn out to be a life changing trip for all of us.
As we left the concrete grey and right angles of Port Huron, it wasn't long before we realized this was more than a trip for garage saling and a stay in a motel. The visions of Lake Huron peaking out from the trees' canopies on M25 exuded calmness and relaxation, even though we were just 80 minutes from home. It was as if we had entered another realm. I half expected Rod Serling to be standing behind the table at the next sale, arms folded, telling us we were "witnessing a new world".
