The Old Sweet Shop is a characterful, thatched cottage full of warmth, history and personality. Sleeping up to eight guests, itâs a wonderfully sociable place to stay, ideal for families and friends who enjoy spending time together in a relaxed, comfortable setting. The cottage also benefits from private on-site parking for two cars, making arrivals and day trips easy and stress-free.
At the heart of the cottage is the large kitchen and dining room â a light, welcoming space designed for shared meals, conversation and long, unhurried evenings. The farmhouse table easily seats everyone, making it perfect for group breakfasts, celebratory dinners or simply gathering with a glass of wine after a day out. The kitchen is well equipped for proper cooking and feels very much like the centre of the home.
The living room is cosy and inviting, with exposed beams, thick stone walls and a wood-burning stove that makes it especially appealing in cooler months. Itâs a space to slow down, read, chat or enjoy a film together at the end of the day.
The cottage sleeps eight across four individually styled bedrooms, each with its own character. From the four-poster king room to the light-filled twin and the king bedroom with roll-top bath, the layout works well for mixed groups who want both privacy and comfort. Quality mattresses, good storage and solid construction ensure a restful nightâs sleep throughout.

Once a much-loved part of the local streetscape, it offered the opportunity to restore a traditional thatched property with care and attention, while creating a welcoming home that worked well for modern stays. The restoration focused on retaining the cottageâs original features â from its stone walls and beams to its layout and sense of warmth â while ensuring it was practical, comfortable and easy to enjoy as a holiday home.
It was during this process that the adjoining barn came into view. Having completed work on The Old Sweet Shop, attention then turned to what would become Stone Barn, transforming a former working building into a thoughtfully designed holiday property that complements the cottage next door.
Over time, this approach has grown into Exmoor Character Cottages â a small collection of four carefully restored homes, each with its own personality and sense of place. Many guests return year after year, something I take as the greatest compliment.
Sharing these properties, and helping guests enjoy everything Exmoor has to offer, continues to be a genuine pleasure.
