This is walking country: the smooth, green Howgill Fells, the heights of Wild Boar Fell, and Smardale Gill nature reserve with its great stone viaduct are all close, while the celebrated Settle–Carlisle railway threads dramatic scenery nearby. Sedbergh, England’s book town, and a scattering of dale villages with old stone pubs are within easy reach.
