Grapnells Lodge combines two stylish homes in Wallasea island, Essex. The Nest and The Wagtails hosts up to 14 guests across 6 bedrooms. Set on a peaceful farm by the RSPB reserve, itâs ideal for family groups, walking holidays or full-site celebrations. Guests enjoy two kitchens, gardens, Smart TVs, wood burners and fast Wi-Fi. The whole site is exclusively yours, with plenty of space to relax or gather together. For retreats or special occasions, just let us know â we can tailor your stay.

Thereâs plenty to explore on the more than 740 hectares of the reserve and there are six walking trails, with two shelters so that you can sit back and relax while you watch the river. Wallasea Island sits within a Special Protection Area which covers the Crouch and Roach estuaries, which are home to various waders and wildfowl, like Dark-bellied Brent Geese.
Bird Watching:
Wallasea Island is a paradise for birdwatchers. You can spot a variety of species, including avocets, lapwings, curlews, marsh harriers, and short-eared owls. The island is especially popular during migration seasons when numerous wading birds and waterfowl pass through.
Coastal Trails:
The coastal walks around Wallasea Island provide stunning views of the Essex coastline, River Crouch and Roach estuaries, and the islandâs unique wetland habitats. Grapnells Lodge is made up of two separate holiday homes â The Wagtails and The Nest â located next to each other and available to book together for larger groups.
Bedrooms
Across both homes, there are 6 double bedrooms and a mezzanine with a king-size bed.
Rooms are spacious, bright, and furnished for comfort.
All beds come with quality linens and storage for belongings.
Five of the bedrooms have views over farmland and a nature reserve.
The mezzanine bedroom in The Wagtails has stunning views over open fields and Essex Marina.

Getting Here
By Car:
From Central London: Around 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic.
From the M25, 50 to 60 minutes. Main roads to use are the A127, A13, or A130.
From Southend Airport: A quick 20 minute drive.
By Train:
The nearest station is Rochford, on the London Liverpool Street line.
Journey time from London Liverpool Street: Approximately 1 hour.
From Rochford Station, itâs a 15â20 minute taxi ride through scenic country roads.

On your left, look for a white rendered house called Grapnells Farmhouse. Just after it, follow the red brick garden wall as it curves left.
Take the concrete driveway between the two red brick walls for The Nestâ this leads into the courtyard with parking.
The front entrance door and key safe box are next to the road that continues on to the farm buildings.
Take the concrete road towards the farm buildings and the Wagtails is the neighbouring building next to the farm gates. parking for 3 to 4 cars is in front of the building. The key box is next to the front door.

A Quick Heads-Up:
A few times each year, the road onto Wallasea Island can flood at high tide. This is rare, but if it happens while you're approaching, you may need to wait up to an hour for the tide to go down.
