Rockgarth - A luxury retreat.
Rockgarth - The Heights of Luxury
Perched just above the heart of Ambleside, yet wrapped in a rare stillness, discover Rockgarth, a hillside haven where the Lake District landscape feels like part of the décor.
A short stroll from the bustle below, this architecturally elevated retreat frames cinematic views over Amblesideâs rooftops and the Langdale ridgeline beyond, from first light to sunset.
In the heart of the village
Supremely accessible, ignoring the tight one-way tangle of town traffic, simply turn off onto the Old Lakes Road, turning gently up the hillside to the quiet calm of Rockgarth. Thereâs plenty of space for four or five cars to park on the driveway, with a secure garage complete with an electric car charger or e-bike charging.
Indoors, the calm continues, stepping into a practically designed lobby, where a picture window keeps the views of Black Fell, Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam almost within touching distance, while underfoot, weather-toned Spanish tiles echo the hues of the landscape. Interior designer-led in its décor throughout, with a touch of home comfort in select pieces of furniture, emerald greens, deep blues, warm-toned Chesterfield leather, curated wallpapers, and jewel-toned lighting combine, creating an ambience at once luxurious and inviting, warm and welcoming, a comforting home from home.
Serene spaces
Pocket doors open the flow, linking the porch to a series of beautifully zoned spaces that maintain a sense of connection: from the fireside snug with its wraparound windows (perfect for morning yoga with a mountain view) to the vaulted dining room with its oversized pendant lights and six-seater table.
The view, however, is the main course. Slide open the glass and dine alfresco. Pour a drink from the cocktail cupboard and toast the sunset from the handmade, locally sourced slate terrace, or bubble beneath the stars in the hot tub with a glass of something fizzy (the thoughtfully stocked drinks cupboard keeps safety in mind, offering a selection of plastic flutes and tumblers).
Indoors, settle beside the fire with a post-walk cognac in hand and your pick of vintage glassware, or unwind with a film on the sleek media wall, discreetly built in without ever drawing attention from the view.
Designed for togetherness
Sociable and superbly equipped, the kitchen centres around a large marble island with a beautiful wooden breakfast bar, creating a natural hub between the dining table, living area and snug. A Quooker boiling water tap makes light work of morning cuppas, while a bank of ovens, a plate warmer, fridge, freezer and wine cooler are all neatly integrated for ease. Every utensil and appliance is thoughtfully provided, from potato peelers and roasting tins to cafetiĂšres, foil, mugs and baking trays.
Whether cooking or conversing, the views from the kitchen are inescapable, vast and ever-changing, like a living landscape painting.
Discreetly tucked behind the kitchen, a glass door opens into a practical boot room entrance, acting as an overflow storage area for the kitchen. A secondary fridge is provided along with plenty of additional functional storage for all of those holiday essentials. The handcrafted bench seating wall is perfect for perching on to peel off muddy boots or damp jackets after a day on the fells. From here, continue through to the dedicated laundry room, where stacked Miele washer and dryer units sit alongside custom drying racks and pull-out laundry baskets; ideal for sorting swimsuits, hiking gear or towels, keeping the main living space clutter-free, no matter how adventurous the day.
Rest and refresh
When bedtime beckons, make your way to the bedroom wing where sanctuary awaits.
Soak away the aches in the main, spa-like bathroom, elegantly tiled and furnished with shower, where mirrored cabinetry offers both front and back views (ideal for shaving or checking your reflection before a night out at one of Amblesideâs many mouthwatering restaurants).
Opposite, the first of the bedrooms gazes out through full-height windows to the rear landscaped garden, where newly planted borders will create a changing tapestry through the seasons. A soothing contrast of greens combined with wood flooring gives a cocooning sense of sleeping beneath a forest canopy, with plenty of storage in the classic armoire, bedside table and dressing table.
Step across the hallway to discover the second bedroom, airy, spacious and dressed in calming fern greens softened by a striking floral feature wall. A king-sized zip-and-link bed (which can be split for twin sleeping) makes this a flexible room for couples, friends, or children. Mirrored wardrobes offer ample space to unpack and unwind.
Five-star vistas
Finally, the principal suite offers five-star luxury. Extended to maximise both space and outlook, this room greets the day with sweeping westerly views toward the Langdales, framed perfectly from the bed where you can watch the sun sink behind the peaks. Blue tones wash the room in calm, while soft linens, plush cushions and quiet textures invite total relaxation.
The en-suite continues the bliss, furnished with a freestanding bath and a large walk-in shower with a view, while the twin sinks are positioned so that even your reflection takes in the hills.
Outdoor living
Elevated above the town, Rockgarthâs garden opens out like a private amphitheatre, with sweeping views over Amblesideâs slate rooftops and the church spire and across to the rolling ridgelines beyond.
Follow the sun throughout the day, from the east-facing seating area at the front, perfect for early morning coffee, to the large slate terrace, where glass balustrades keep the view close even while seated. A triumph of craftsmanship: handmade by a local stonemason over the course of a month, using individually laid slabs of Cumberland slate sourced from the original site, the circular seating area is totally in tune with the surroundings.
Tucked just off the terrace, the hot tub enjoys privacy and shelter beneath a discreet canopy offering protection from the elements and somewhere dry to hang towels while you soak. Whether easing aching legs after a fell walk or watching the stars emerge over the Langdales, itâs the ultimate spot to relax, recharge and reconnect.
On one side, a tucked-away kitchen garden lends its scent to the air, whilst there is also a dedicated flat lawn for childrenâs games (badminton rackets included in the games cupboard indoors).
Out and about
From fell walks to fine dining, Rockgarth is at the epicentre of Lakeland life. Drop into town for artisan bread, Michelin-starred meals or a film at Zeffirellis. Hop on a Windermere ferry to Bowness or Newby Bridge. Hike the local peaks straight from the door. Or simply watch the world go by from the warmth of your own hillside sanctuary.
This is the best of both worlds: a front-row seat to the Lakes, with a quietness that feels almost out of reach.
