Stalkers Cottage - a cottage that sleeps 5 guests in 3 bedrooms
Stalker’s Cottage, set amidst the stunning Killiechonate Estate near Spean Bridge, is the perfect retreat for couples or families seeking adventure and a connection with the outdoors. Once the head stalker’s house on the estate, this traditional one and a half storey cottage has been recently refurbished to a high standard. Conveniently located just 10 miles northeast of Fort William, it serves as an excellent base for exploring the Scottish Highlands, with both the Isle of Skye and Inverness only 1.5 hours drive away.
Accommodating up to five guests, the cottage welcomes you with a spacious entrance, thoughtfully designed to store all your outdoor boots, coats, and gear after a day of exploring the Highlands. Kick off your footwear and feel the warmth of the underfloor heating beneath your feet. At the heart of the living space is a wood log burner, the perfect place to sit and unwind, whether it’s enjoying a captivating book, sharing stories, or engaging in a friendly board game by the fire.
The cottage is situated within a working estate that spans an impressive 114,000 acres, offering a wealth of sporting opportunities, including fishing, stalking, and shooting, for those looking to immerse themselves in traditional Highland pursuits.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Killiechonate Estate acres and surrounding areas offer something for everyone. The estate boasts numerous hiking trails just steps from the cottage. These trails cater to all levels, ranging from gentle riverside strolls to more challenging hill walks in the Nevis Range and Cairngorm Mountains, all offering breathtaking views of the Highlands. The nearby River Spean, known for its salmon and trout fishing, provides a peaceful and scenic spot for anglers. Wildlife lovers will delight in the abundance of animals on the estate, including red deer and golden eagles, with ample opportunities for birdwatching and wildlife photography.
A short drive from Spean Bridge, Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak beckons experienced walkers and mountaineers with its challenging ascent. For a less strenuous adventure, the gondola ride at the Nevis Range offers spectacular panoramic views and the World Class Mountain Bike Trails are sure to challenge you. Nearby Glen Nevis, a stunning valley, is perfect for a relaxing walk or a more demanding hike to Steall Waterfall, Scotland’s second highest waterfall, with a single drop of 120 metres.
Another highlight is the Jacobite Steam Train, which travels between Fort William and Mallaig. This iconic journey takes you through the heart of the Highlands and famously features the Glenfinnan Viaduct, providing an unforgettable experience for Harry Potter fans and railway enthusiasts alike.
The nearby towns of Fort William and Inverness are also worth exploring. Fort William offers local shops, dining, and cultural gems like the West Highland Museum. Inverness, the gateway to the Highlands, is home to attractions such as Inverness Castle and an array of charming cafés and boutiques. A visit to nearby Loch Ness is a must, where you can search for the legendary Nessie and explore the atmospheric ruins of Urquhart Castle.
Less than 1.5 hours drive away and further east is Aviemore and the Cairngorms National Park. Ride the funicular railway or hike to the summit of Cairngorm Mountain for sweeping views. Nearby, the Highland Wildlife Park offers an up-close look at animals like Scottish wildcats and polar bears. Relax at the sandy shores of Loch Morlich, where you can try watersports or explore forest trails. Don’t miss the Rothiemurchus Estate, an outdoor playground with activities like pony trekking, quad biking, and clay pigeon shooting.
For whisky enthusiasts, the region’s renowned distilleries offer unforgettable experiences. Visit the Ben Nevis Distillery in Fort William to discover the art of whisky-making and sample their exceptional single malts. Further afield, the Dalwhinnie Distillery provides a guided tasting that pairs whisky with artisan chocolates, offering a truly indulgent experience. These tours provide insight into Scotland’s proud whisky heritage and a chance to take home a bottle of your favourite dram.
Golfers can enjoy the scenic Spean Bridge Golf Club, a beautiful course with stunning views of the surrounding hills and lochs. For those seeking relaxation, the estate’s tranquil surroundings are ideal, and nearby resorts offer spa treatments to help you unwind after a day of adventure.
In winter, the area transforms into a wonderland for snow sports. The Nevis Range and Cairngorm Mountain Resort offer excellent skiing and snowboarding for all levels, while the picturesque snowy landscapes are perfect for snowshoeing and winter hiking, providing a serene way to enjoy the Highlands during the colder months.
