Buurt is top!
Schoon.
fantastic terrace - scary stairs
We did have a good time in this apartment - and the owner is a lovely man. He met us when we arrived, and gave us a bottle of wine which was really thoughtful. On the plus side, the terrace is large - with a decked seating area at one end, a small table and chairs in the middle, and 2 sun loungers at the other end. What I hadn't realised from the photos was that the flat is very small. The shower room is tiny and sadly has no place to put shampoo etc other than on the floor. The kitchen area is also tiny, but fine if all you are using it for are drinks or snacks, and the large fridge is great. The use of the fish eye lens in the photos, and tricks like folding the dining table down so that it looks like a coffee table made it look bigger than the reality. If you are after outside space, and a reasonable price then go for it....but if you are like us with bad knees then don't....the stairs to the bedroom are almost vertical - it's pretty much a ladder and absolutely terrified me...going down the stairs to the loo in the dark of the night was awful (and being open plan ie no door between floors or at top of ladder meant you couldn't put on a light without waking partner). I feel bad saying negative things because the owner is so lovely - but it was the thing that I hadn't realised from the photos and wouldn't have booked if I had realised. There are also 2 steps to get up from the apartment to the sliding doors out to the terrace. The flat would benefit from the addition of an iron and ironing board, a bin in the bathroom, and a shelf in the bathroom, and something to cover the glass above the front door as the light through there woke me early each day.
A Valencia Gem
I wavered about whether to give 4 or 5 stars. I gave 5 so please see below for why.
This is a very cool neighbourhood, not touristy but with plenty of amenities right there for you. More of a feeling for the 'real' city than in the Old Town.
The terrace is just amazing. It made our holiday.
Definitely great value for money.
Jose Luis is very responsive. We got into a great way of communicating via WhatsApp. He's also great in person and brought us the juiciest strawberries from the market on our arrival. He's a very thoughtful person.
The apartment is small - but it's still way better than an hotel for the price and if you like your independence.
The kitchen is limited but as per the pics and description. The surface is cracking and, if anything I would say the apartment generally probably needs a bit of a refresh: one of the kitchen drawers is broken, the bathroom has a bit of damp which the hosts have attempted to mask with an air-freshener, which just makes the place smell very strongly to the point where we had to unplug it (I know this can't always be fixed in apartments). The bed linen was worn and quite rough. Considering the price and the fact it's only for a holiday it wasn't a big problem. Just maybe something worth considering for the host.
There's a lot of construction going on across the road and it's noisy during the day. The road is also very loud but not at night and you're in the middle of a city - so what can be expected?
The wifi didn't work when we got there but Jose Luis was right on it and got it actually cabled in while we were there so that should be fine. We really appreciated the lengths Jose Luis went to to get this sorted.
A very clever solution to a space problem is the 'samba' stairs. Great design idea but not, in my opinion, suitable for anyone but fully able-bodied adults.
The description states "comfy seating for 4" and "able to accommodate three people". Give the size, the layout and the fact there is a sofa for two and then only dining chairs inside (on the terrace, for sure - four or maybe six) I can't imagine a scenario in which you would want three people in the bedroom unless one was a child and then the stairs would be a problem.
This is my very honest review, which I hope will help other travellers and the host with their plans. We loved staying here and had a great time. I would happily recommend it to anyone. It's a real gem. Thank you Jose Luis!
