Some recommendations for you of places to visit during your stay: I'd definitely recommend St Fagans museum of Welsh Life, Bute park is lovely, Boat trip from there down to the Bay is nice for a couple of hours. Good ice cream at Llanfaes Dairy there. Cardiff castle is interesting, but also Castle Coch. Although Cardiff was originally a Roman Fortress - you can still see some of the original walls, other parts of it were remodelled by William Burgess who also designed Castle Coch.
A trip to the Brecon Beacons and Brecon is lovely - and they have a marina and theatre - you can do boating trips from there or enjoy a walk along the canal. My prefered route to the Beacons for views would be via Llwydcoed and A4058. Talybont on Usk is also nice for canal walk and the Star Inn there is a proper pub. Other good places to visit include Narberth, Laugharne (Dylan Thomas connections) and of course Castles- Cerreg Cenin is quite spectacular for where it is, but Caerphilly, Pembroke, Ogmore... pretty much any of them are worth a visit.
Rhayader and the Elan Valley are nice, depends how far north you want to go; journey though Mid Wales is spectacular. I'd avoid Mumbles that everyone raves about - it's just busy, better to find nicer beaches on The Gower. Rhossili worth a visit. Tredegar House is worth a look. Lots of people choose to walk up the highest peak in south Wales - Pen Y Fan, if you do set off early as it can get quite busy! Lots of waterfalls to check out around South Wales too, but be careful on slippery paths please.
