Rent a bike and join the crowd
This modern Japanese inspired home is very utilitarian and perfect for two or a small family of three. It has the basic amenities that you need barring an oven or microwave. The neutral tones and minimalistic decor complimented the lush and colorful landscape. This efficiency is conveniently located in Cocles near the beach (easy Costa Rican walk) and grocery store. There is semi-gourmet grocery store in Punta Uva, a short bike ride. Puerto Viejo is approximately 8 minutes away accessible via bike or car. However, a rental car is not necessary. We traded our 4x4 in for a car, then bikes. Mopri (get the fish soup!), Monli (eel) and Koki's Beach (happy hour and octopus) were our favorite dinner and lunch spots. We also made homemade ceviche with fish from the pescaderia to the right of Mopri (under same awning). We liked that the house was not in the heart of Puerto Viejo. Everyone rides bikes there (most are under the influence :) ), so you will need to exercise patience. Our favorite beach was Punta Uva, which was a 10 minute bike ride. Rent a kayak, near Selvin's restaurant and go out snorkeling. Playa Negra is a beautiful black beach located when you first get into PV, but there is no shade.
Tania and Henri were very nice and unobtrusive hosts with a strong network of cab, shuttle, restaurant and beach info. Tania is a chocolatier, selling her sweets to local shops and restaurants. She greeted us with a small taste upon arrival! We recommend this casa (and her chocolates)!
