Directly on the Elbe at the gates of Hamburg The Elbe at river kilometre 581. On the opposite side you can see the GeestrĂŒcken. An enchanting legacy of the last ice age. Up to this point, the advancing glaciers pushed the land up to form walls, some of which were over 100 metres high. The primeval valley of the Elbe with its fertile marshes subsequently formed at the borders of these earth upheavals. The place name Marschacht also refers to these once marshy landscapes. With the start of dyke construction at the beginning of the 12th century, attempts were made to tame the river. The mighty power of the elements can still be seen today during the regular floods. Sometimes the entire foreland floods within hours. The Elbe water then reaches our dyke. With a bit of luck, you will see one of the inland waterway vessels leisurely passing by. They transport goods and merchandise between the nearby harbour of the Hanseatic city of Hamburg in the direction of Magdeburg or via various inland waterways to the capital Berlin.

Today, around 3,700 people live here on an area of 26 square kilometres. Marschacht is also the seat of the administration of the joint municipality of Elbmarsch, which also includes the towns of Tespe and Drage. Hamburg is to the north-west of the town and on the opposite bank of the Elbe are the Schleswig-Holstein towns of Geesthacht and KrĂŒmmel. The location is very convenient, with the 250 motorway around 15 kilometres south of the town and the nearest long-distance train station around 20 minutes away. The journey to Hamburg Airport takes around 45 minutes, although this can be considerably longer if there are traffic jams. The town and countryside of Marschacht stretches for several kilometres in a slightly hilly landscape along the ElbuferstraĂe, which in turn follows the course of the Elbe. In the centre of the village is a picturesque 400-year-old church, while the rest of the development consists mainly of detached houses in typical settlement structures interspersed with green spaces. There are also still a few farms and commercially utilised areas. In the south of Marschacht there are meadows and pastures as well as cultivated fields. Shopping and catering Hardly any shopping needs remain unfulfilled in Marschacht; the extensive range of options is complemented by the weekly market that takes place twice a week. This ensures local supplies for residents and there are also numerous options for an evening out at a restaurant. The good infrastructure is rounded off by local doctors, pharmacies and social facilities. There is a hospital in Geesthacht on the other bank of the Elbe. Leisure Many clubs are active in Marschacht and characterise the social life of the town. Sports activities range from the gymnastics and sports club to the sailing club and the shooting club. There are also choirs, brass bands, marching bands, nature conservation organisations and the liberal arts gallery. There is also a family outdoor pool in neighbouring Tespe and a cinema in Geesthacht. Childcare and education Within Marschacht there is a primary school and three kindergartens as well as a secondary school and a secondary modern school.
