The property worked excellent for me my husband, adult son and sister-in-law. All of the rooms were clean and spacious. I loved the large living area with outdoor patio you that could open up. Everyone had space, easy to sit around the couch and play card games. it was comfortable. We booked excursions with Lola and had a magical time at the dolphin encounter. I highly recommend it.
The house is in a great location on the beach between West End and West Bay. Very nice dock to use and good snorkelling. Short walk to a dive shop and restaurant - had lots of good meals at Luna Muna. Easy to use a water taxi to go to other restaurants or can walk as well. Would love to return someday!
The house was gorgeous and the location was perfect! Melissa took care of all our needs; including arranging transportation from the airport with a stop to buy groceries on our way to the house. It was quiet & felt very safe.... and the snorkeling from the beach behind the house was amazing! Canât wait to go back!
25 of us came for a family celebration of one of us becoming a doctor. We use the mermaid house as the food Central and it was absolutely perfect. The deck is amazing. Our little ones loved. The small pool only had to gather silverware from the other house and used paper plates, it was great.
My family and I loved staying at the Mermaid House. Beautiful, clean house with pool and everything we needed. Perfect location right between West Bay and West End. It was easy to walk to either or just take a water taxi from the dock. We were able to snorkel right out in front too.
We have been to Roatan many times and this was my favorite property and location of all.
Melissa was wonderful to work with great communication.
We will definitely return and stay here again.
We were very pleased with this home. It was as nice as the pictures showed, clean and in good condition. The location was nice with great views and snorkeling right off the dock. Melissa was a great host suggesting good places to eat and helping us with questions. We can't wait to go back.
We had the absolute best stay at Mermaid Beach House! The property is beautiful, comfortable, and clean. The location is great- easy snorkeling right off the beach in super clear water, easy to get to restaurants, and easy to leave for excursions/water taxis. Melissa was very prompt and easy to work with. Her suggestions were all fabulous! Loly picked us up at the airport and also took us to visit the sloths/monkeys. She is so sweet, friendly, and knowledgeable- I highly recommend getting to know her and using her services! Dixie is also an incredibly sweet person and an amazing cook. She cooked two delicious meals for us during our stay and I would highly recommend anyone staying here do the same!
The house and property were amazing. exactly as listed & shown on the website. melissa could not have been a more perfect & helpful host. She arranged all our transportation needs & provided us with any requests. We all had a wonderful time & will return again in the near future.
I cannot say enough about how much we four adults enjoyed our stay! The Mermaid House was spacious and had everything we needed for our week-long stay. It was very comfortable, and the kitchen was fully stocked. The location was perfect--about halfway between the West Bay and the West End--and Melissa was extremely responsive and helpful. We enjoyed the sunsets every evening from the beautiful deck, and during the day we went snorkeling from the dock. Also, Melissa put us in touch with Patrick, who picked us up at our dock and took us for a half-day of snorkeling on the reefs nearby (I highly recommend contacting Patrick!). All in all, the house and Melissa made this one of our best trips ever. We hope to return:).
A Beautiful home with stunning views and in premium location. All of our wants and needs were addressed very quickly by our host, Melissa, who goes above and beyond! Every recommendation and referral made our stay so memorable. Including transportation and excursions (i.e island tour, mangroves, fishing, massages etc) to dining....DO NOT miss out on DIXIE...WOW! Her food is amazing, what a blessing! Lighting could have been been brighter in some rooms. Additional shout outs to Loly, Afan, Shannon. Thank you to all!!! Look forward to returning to this beautiful home & island. Highly recommended!
Privately nestled in Orchid Beach Village away from the popular areas of West Bay and West End but with easy access via walking along the beach or by water taxi. The home itself is nicely furnished with a well equipped kitchen. The house faces directly onto West Bay providing you with absolutely amazing sunsets. Melissa the property manager was readily available and can help with booking any excursions. There is an excellent dive shop located right down the beach. If you are there for a week you likely won't need a car as transportation is readily available to get you around the island. Overall a fantastic vacation and wouldn't hesitate to book Casa Rubio on our next visit to Roatan.
Our family of 6 stayed at the Mermaid Beach House the week before Christmas and had a great time. The views and gardens are amazing, and it was very easy to walk up and down the beach to go to restaurants. It was also easy to flag down a passing water taxi for a quick ride. The people also made this a memorable stay. Melissa was so pleasant to work with. She provided lots of advice on activities prior to our trip and was very helpful during our stay. Loly was great too. She helped set up a fishing/snorkeling trip with Patrick who I highly recommend. In lieu of renting a car she picked us up from the airport, took us on a full island tour and drove us to the brewery in the jungle on the way back to the airport. I also recommend having Dixie cook at the house. She came two nights, and we really enjoyed talking to her while she made wonderful dinners. Overall this location was perfect, and the friendly folks we met made it even better!
First off, Melissa is the best host of a VRBO I have ever worked with. She was always quick to respond before our arrival and sent us numerous emails with helpful tips, excursions, and contacts she had on the island before we arrived. When we got there, she met us at the house to go thru everything we needed to know.
The roads to get to the house once you get off the main road are quite tricky but Melissa gave us the location coordinates to use in the google/waze to get to the house.
We went for our 20th anniversary and were accompanied by another couple. The house is very updated with everything you need there. Each bedroom has itâs own on suite bathroom and the view from the deck is great. The deck is well designed also with the perfect small plunge pool to cool off and a covered portion to stay out of the sun if needed or right in the sun if that is what you are looking for. Unfortunately a tropical storm had come thru the night before we arrived so the beach was not usable during our stay as it had a couple feet of garbage and seaweed on it that was starting to get cleaned up as we were leaving. We dis take advantage of the water taxis a few times to both west end and west bay and I can say that I did not see another house in that stretch that had a good of a view as the mermaid beach house.
This is a great option if you are staying on Roatan.
Mermaid House (a lot of the locals still call it Casa Rubio) is exactly as advertised. It sits in a great halfway location between West End town and West Bay beach. The deck is uniquely elevated above the neighbor's houses which affords nice privacy while sunbathing. If there was any change we would make to the house, it would be some improved lighting as the interior is beautiful dark wood but tends to absorb the light. Minor detail though in an otherwise great house. The host, Melissa, was very accommodating and responsive. She has great connections for anything you would like to do. If you're there to dive, Clearwater Adventures is a short walk down the beach and proved to be a great operation. Other reviewers have done a good job of detailing other fun things like having the resident chef Dixie in to cook! We wished we had another week to stay!
Our host, Melissa was great and very attentive! Juan Carlos kept the pool up & trimmed some trees away from the roofline that were loud in the wind on the metal roof. We loved the location of the home a few steps down to the beach!
Unfortunately the home needs work. The kitchen drawer pulls and cupboards were not in working order, the pool shades are missing- making it virtuously impossible to use the deck in the heat of the day. The towels and linens need to be replaced badly they are dingy and musty, The pool chairs could use cushions. The bbq is not working 100% only a few of the burners turn on.
We used the transportation that Melissa recommended and it was great! She stopped at the grocery store so we could stock
Up! We also had Dixie cook dinner our first night, and it was outstanding!
True beachfront property conveniently right between West Bay and West End. House fit 6 very comfortably. Melissa is very responsive and helpful with recommendations. Loly was amazing for tours, and we had a great snorkel trip with Patrick. Definitely have Dixie come cook- her dinner was the best meal we had during our trip! Pool is small but fit us all comfortably no problem. AC cools the house very quickly. The dockâs palapa is fantastic and much cooler than the deck during the middle of the hot day. (Not much shade on the deck)
A few things to know about the house-one of the water access pump things connects in one of the bedrooms and makes a very loud sound when in use- put someone in there that is a heavy sleeper or shut off access when they go to bed. Bring LOTS of bug spray (itâs the Caribbean- there are bugs like everywhere else- I got bit up worse here than any other island Iâve ever been) Do not venture north after sunset (there is a armed robbery warning sign) one of the girls was approached by 4 men at the dock but they went the other direction when one of the guys came running to her. (House has locks- we felt safe inside at night) There is decent snorkeling off the dock- but for better snorkeling and prettier water/beach take a $5pp water taxi to the very west end of West Bay Beach (try to avoid it on cruise ship days though!) Make sure to stop for snacks/coffee before you check in; there isnât anything in walking distance.
We stayed at Casa Rubio for 12 days in the beginning of February and had a great experience. Our party was a 70 year old couple, a 40 year old couple and a 7 year old and everyone was very happy with the house.
The house: House was super roomy and built to US standards. Beds were all very comfortable, appliances were all top of the line, air conditioners worked, tv and internet were both good. One shower had temperamental water pressure but we just used the other 2 showers. Plenty of closet and dresser space. The deck was huge with an awesome view, and was partially covered allowing us to sit outside if there was a rain shower or the sun was too much. The owner and groundskeeper were super quick to respond to any questions we had.
Getting around: It was our first time to Roatan and the location of the house worked out great. We did not rent a car and got around fine. The house is situated between west end and west bay and either can be reached quickly by water taxi for $3 per person. It is about a 3/4 mile walk to either, and took us about 15-20 minutes with our group. Walking to West Bay was easy enough for everyone in our group and you can make the whole walk and keep your feet dry, but there is a steep set of stairs you have to climb. The walk to West End is doable but there are points that you have to go over rocks or go into the water so don't wear shoes that you don't want wet. Good restaurants in both directions, we especially enjoyed the Creole Chicken in West End. On a side note we hired a local named Cleve Bodden for a island tour on our first day. I can't recommend him enough. Best tour guide I have ever had, and we vacation 2-3 times a year with many tours. You can find him on trip advisor and won't be disappointed.
Snorkeling and Scuba: There is a dive shop right on the beach at the house called Clearwater adventures. They were great. Small group great guides and reasonable prices and there are tons of dive spots within minutes of the dock. Sam and Denisse were both awesome to work with. Good snorkeling right in front of the house and awesome snorkeling a short swim or kayak/boat ride away.
As other reviewers have stated, the location is great! We walked to west Bay and were able to walk to several restaurants towards West Bay. We almost rented a car but are so glad we didn't as we walked everywhere, used water taxis (they were so easy to get), and took advantage of Loly's friendly services. We loved seeing the Macaws flying over the house every night on their way to dinner. Sunsets were great from the deck, and we enjoyed watching the mermaid sunning herself! When we return, this is the area we will return to!
I cannot overstate how much we loved our experience. This house is amazing but more importantly, our host Melissa made our trip better than we could have imagined. Melissa was helpful from before we left on our trip until the minute we headed for home. She set us up for rides to and from the airport with Shannon and Loly (Lola). She set us up with an Island tour with Lola which included a boat ride through the mangroves with a stop for lunch (this is a must do experience). Melissa scheduled two evenings of home cooked meals with Dixie which were absolutely scrumptious meals and tons of fun! The location of this house is perfect. It is a 5 minute walk to Clearwater Dive shop which I highly recommend for scuba and snorkeling tours on the reef. Also it is a short walk to the Gumbalimba Park which was a must do experience (monkeys, parrots, iguanas, ziplining etc..). Water taxis are easy to get from the private dock for a short ride to West End or West Bay. We cannot wait to return. Thank you Melissa, Lola, Dixie and Shannon for making our adventure so perfect! I highly recommend this house!
My 2nd visit to this home was just as great and relaxing as the first one in May 2021. It has the best view on the beach, has semi-privacy, yet is close walking distance to a beach bar, dive shop, and upscale restaurants further down the beach. Very quiet stretch of the beach. Walk further down to West Bay for more action and better snorkeling (but lots more cruise ship tourists).
Melissa, the homeâs host, is wonderful and attentive. This place feels comfy like home from the moment you arrive. Iâll be back again in the future.
