hangin at the Howler
we were looking for a home base from which to enjoy our first time in Costa Rica and The Howler served that purpose well
....laid back, unpretentious, simple, emphasis on relaxing....
Jim was a knowledgeable, entertaining, accommodating, easy going host
Michelle, and her family were very interested in my knowledge of the jungle, they stayed a while and we had a ball, come back again.

So Much Potential But Poor Upkeep and Service
We were very much looking forward to our two-night stay at this beautiful and rustic location, based on the photos and listing information. Based on our poor experience the first night, we made arrangements to move to a nearby hotel for the second night at three times the cost. Our first impression was poor, as we parked in the only available parking space inside the gate, next to an unused, extremely dirty vehicle covered half-way in plastic - which comprised our view out both our kitchen and bedroom window. Although lush green jungle characterized the entire area, just outside the entrance was a pile of dead, brown branches that appeared to have been there for a long time. When shown our cabina, we immediately noticed there was blood all over the floor of the bathroom. We accepted the explanation that the blood came from a worker on the property, who had bled all over our bathroom after being cut and had not told James about the incident. We watched James clean the floor and checked in, staying only a short time before leaving for dinner and sight-seeing. After returning in the dark from dinner that night, we realized there was still human blood on our toilet seat and surface of the toilet - and that we had both inadvertently sat in that blood. This caused us to check the rest of the property for cleanliness and we quickly noted that, although the toilet, bathroom sink, and bedroom items had been kept in a generally clean and sanitary state, light switches, wall surfaces, and many kitchen items were dirty enough that we didn't want to touch or handle them. James brought us a coffee maker to use, for example, but it was so covered with black grease and grime, that we set it aside and never felt safe using it.
The abandoned car in the entrance and tree debris outside was not the only indication of poor upkeep, the otherwise beautiful palapa near the beach was marred by rusty metal debris and an abandoned aluminum pot on the ground. The so-called 'kids pool' was empty and covered with dirt and debris on the bottom. Many of the kitchen items were in a very poor state, poor working condition, or dirty to the point we didn't feel safe using them.
The next morning, two workers began cutting very heavy tree limbs right over our cabina. We were unable to be in our cabina or park our car outside, since the cutting was so dangerous.
Our general impression is that the property is in a poor state of repair & is kept clean only in essential areas
So the hotel you moved to was 3 times more expensive,so you were getting value for money.
The old pick up truck inside the gate is my Toyota Tacoma, which saved my life 3 times and i hope to have up and running soon.
If you look out your front windows you have a lovely view of the sea and garden.
Yes there was blood on bathroom floor,as my tree cutters had an accident and never told me,I washed and bleached all the bathroom.😊

More rustic than pictures
More rustic than the pictures capture. Reminded me a lot of summer camp. The pool could use some maintenance. We left after the first night but for someone who loves camping and summer camp, this would be fine.
Lovely people, avad readers like myself, and love the pura vida lifestile,i just hope they come back ,because i have more good books

True to its name
When we arrived to Howler Monkey the first thing we saw in the trees were Howler and Capuchin monkeys! We also saw iguana, giant toads, geckos and quite a few birds. Jim introduced our two kids (6 & 8) to his dogs, showed us the cabana and provided us with a ZOOM Nicoya Peninsula guidebook which proved to be very useful during our stay. The cabanas could use a little TLC and are not for the faint of heart as it is a jungle stay and there will be the occasional critter in the bathroom, etc. We saw more wildlife at the Howler than we did at the Cabo Blanco Nature Rerseve so we were very happy with this! We walked to the cemetery island at low tide and it was very interesting to see. The beach is rather rocky but great for searching for sea shells and watching hermit crabs. The kids swam in the pool nearly every day and quickly befriended the dogs. The hotel is located a little off the beaten path so it is nice and quite there. There are local restaurants, mini-super markets and a bakery within walking distance. We spent a lot of time in the nearby town of Montezuma to swim in the ocean and to see the sights. Costa Rica is truly a fabulous country and we hope to come back some day!
Thanks a million for your very kind review.
Misrepresentation. Poorly managed
This property is not well maintained nor as represented on website. No oven coffee maker blender or working stove. Freezer door broke and old broken fridge sitting on patio. 3 ft wasp/ hornet nest adjacent from open windows with no screens. Kayaks leak per management warning. Beach is rocky and not a walking beach. Beach chairs rusty and no cushions. We chose to leave and owner refused to give any refund even after a written promise from manager.
This woman and her husband were terrible from the moment they got here. The woman never made eye contact. Her husband was aggressive and demanding. They picked apart the place upon arrival when we were fully booked, everyone else was enjoying themselves here. In the end I got rid of them as fast as I could because they were disturbing the guests with their aggressiveness, sulking, and threatening behavior. Never seen anything like it. Too many lies to cover here. They complained about a wasp nest 20’ from their cabina on our house 10’ up, but these wasps never came near them and they have NEVER bothered anyone. This colony has been here for over a decade. We told them that. They lied or were ignorant of everything, there is a coffee maker in every kitchen, the kayaks do not leak, there are no screens because we have no flies or mosquitos and they impede airflow and views. They smeared us because they did not want to abide by the CANCELLATION POLICY THAT THEY AGREED TO. They lost their deposit and PER THE HOMEAWAY CANCELLATION POLICY. They could not come up with any valid reason. Only imaginary things. The woman used foul language (the f word, in an email, where she too tried to intimidate me, I have it if anyone wants to see it), the man pointed his finger, spoke aggressively and loudly, they were both very arrogant. Everyone else around was not and were enjoying the place, as the many excellent reviews that we get attest to. We are not perfect, it is not for everyone, but a lot of people appreciate and understand this place, and if they are not one of those people, maybe they are the 5-star hotel type, used to perfectly square gypsum board walls in each room and the latest American Standard fixtures in the toilet, that’s fine, but you do not stoop to intimidation, aggressiveness, lying, defamation, expletives, and threat of legal action, when you do not get your way when trying to weasel out of an agreement. We try to explain and illustrate exactly what the Howler Monkey Hotel both is and is not, on all the online travel agencies and websites. Just awful behavior. And they were in the wrong. All that angry arrogant bluster and defamation was just a smokescreen to cover that up or to try to justify it. In the end they carried out the threat behind their extortion - they published this review here and on the HomeAway website, and put up 8 pictures on this one. They showed a picture of our sheets drying. Shocking! Now the secret is out – we wash our sheets!
