This charming, updated home includes burnished floors, a stacked-stone gas fireplace, and a well-equipped, full kitchen with stainless steel appliances and a breakfast bar for two. Dine at the adjacent table for four (perfect for family board game nights), and then settle into the cozy living area with a cable and Netflix-equipped TV plus a toasty gas fireplace. Ideal for a small family ski-cation, this home is just two miles away from the renowned Sugar Mountain Resort for prime skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating in winter, as well as mountain biking and hiking in the summer. Additionally, don't miss attractions like the Foggy Mountain Gem Mine for a fun, family-friendly experience, and Grandfather Mountain State Park, home of the Mile High Swinging Bridge. Halfback Mountain Retreat was wonderful! It was decorated with such cute decor, it was very clean, and the deck had an amazing view! I absolutely would recommend going there!

Awesome time!!

When we arrived, it was evening and could see the sugar mountain ski area through the trees and hear them grooming the trails. Was very clean and loved the decor. The fireplace was wonderful in the evening. Beds were very comfortable. Loved everything about it! Would love to go back!

Great mountain retreat!

Our family of three and our pup really enjoyed this clean, comfortable, beautifully furnished retreat!! Beds are super comfy...fireplace is cozy...blankets, games and books provided. Full kitchen stocked with all cooking/eating necessities. Great location!

The unit itself was as described in the listing. It was perfect for our little family. Comfy beds.

I gave the property five stars because it was as described. The issue we had was not with the property itself….it was with the company that manages it. The property is managed by Vacasa which was a completely terrible experience!! Had I known before booking that they were the management company I would have found another place to stay. Getting a simple question answered by their customer service was a nightmare. I got the runaround so many times and it dragged out so long that I wasn’t able to cancel the reservation at that point (not due to me not responding virtually immediately when they sent a message). I had to message them to get the check in information because it was never sent to us (despite me emailing the day before check in and being told we would receive in the morning). The towels they left for us were extremely thin, the hand soap was like water, the coffee pot had some coffee left in it, there was hair on the sheets under the comforter, and we had no trash bags. I would have called Vacasa about these issues, but given how much of a headache they had already created for us I didn’t want it to ruin our vacation. Again, the unit itself was super cute and as described….it was Vacasa that ruined our experience.

although these are older condos, they are well maintained and affordable, a great location in Banner Elk that is close to all the sugar mountain amenities

Perfect Getaway

Halfback Mountain Retreat is a perfect getaway for exploring Banner Elk and Grandfather Mountain! We very were pleased with the full kitchen and loved the decor, cozy den with gas fireplace, and private decks. Both bedrooms are very nice and the bed we slept in is super comfy!

2/1 across the street from Sugar

Quaint, comfy and cozy 2/1 across the street from sugar. The snowy blizzard conditions made trekking up the mountain switchback road a real adventure on my summer tires! Great views from the cabin- it’s upstairs from another unit so you can hear some chatter through the ceiling when occupied by neighbors. I left 50 cone shaped coffee filters there because there were none. Enjoy the coffee, my friends.

Fantastic house and location

We took our adult kids on a ski vacation to Sugar. This was a first for us. We booked the house because we like to cook and have our dogs with us. The trip was great and the house matched and helped to make a great weekend. We had about 18” of snow during our stay. The property had the roads cleared about every four hours. The house was very nice, clean and stocked. The fireplace was nice and the views from all windows was nice. You never know what to expect with pet friendly rentals but this place was great. The staff reached out upon our arrival to check in. We plan to come back and have already made the decision to stay at this place again.

This place was perfect.

Drove in from Wilmington. I hiked the day I went up, grabbed dinner, and headed to the house in Banner Elk. I was only at the house for 12 hours, basically to sleep but it was perfect. I had dinner at Bella's where I have been eating since my younger days. If it's available in January I will be back for snowboarding. Thanks for a great stay.

Beautiful modern cozy condo

This 2 bedroom condo is ideal for a comfortable and clean place to hang out while visiting the mountains. The decor is modern and simple, the kitchen is fully stocked, and 2 large decks provide plenty of space to hang out and relax.
