Casa Mariposa Nature Retreat on ChirripĂł Mountain, pet friendly
Perfect for Large Family Home, or Retreat Center
Casa Mariposa is a cozy 5 room boutique nature lodge located in the Talamanca Range in the valley of the wild river ChirripĂł, Costa Rica. The Casa sits at 5000 ft (1500 m), amidst the trailheads to Costa Ricaâs Mount Chirripo National Park, Cloudbridge Nature Reserve, and the Talari river valley. Situated on one acre of mature and secondary forest with two perennial streams and views of the 12,000ft mountains and verdant Rio Chirripo valley, the tranquil Casa Mariposa has been a beloved retreat destination for hikers, birders and naturalists for over 25 years.
The Casa has been designed to incorporate and celebrate the magnificent granite boulders of the Talamanca Range found throughout the lush 1 acre property. The original mountain-house charm has been lovingly preserved using locally-sourced wood, stonework, hand-crafted doors and windows, bespoken details and artistic touches by both local and internationally known artists. The centrally located wood-stove is a favorite gathering place on chilly mountain evenings. The Casa has a salt water warm and cold pools in the garden, a covered yoga deck, covered alfresco garden house and sun deck. Hammocks are everywhere.
The main house consists of 5 bedrooms sharing 3.5 baths and a dedicated soaking tub grotto. The living room, large kitchen, and light-filled dining room open directly onto the forest and sound of the small waterfall below. The invitation to immerse in nature is completed by a grand atrium sheltering outdoor stone and spiral stairways leading to the upper living areas and garden.
Bedrooms include three queen bedrooms on the main floor, a large bunk room, and a large main Suite. The suite includes an al fresco bath, sitting room, additional sleeping loft, and hammock deck. The main house sleeps 18 people.
Trail systems on the property lead through mature oak, monkey comb and aguacatillo trees, to small waterfalls. The forest has been managed and protected as a sanctuary for wildlife.
Patios and decks are located throughout the property for maximum enjoyment of the abundant bird, mammal, and insect life.
The facility has been designed to function as a full or seasonal family home, hosted airbnb-style rental, practitioner or retreat venue.
Utilities: fiber-optic internet, strong cell service, Costa Rican electric provider ICE (which derives 99% of its energy from renewable sources), and propane gas for water heaters and stoves. Water to the Casa is spring-fed and includes a pressure pump and filter system including UV light treatment. This property has been maintained organically for over 17 years.
Location
Casa Mariposa is 1.5km from San Gerardo de Rivas center by paved and gravel road. San Gerardo de Rivas is home to the Chirripo National Park office, several restaurants, a small grocery, fruit stand, and specialty organic grocery. Nearby villages offer live music venues, cafĂ©s, bakeries, weekly farmersâ markets, artisanal cheese maker, trout fisheries, butterfly sanctuary, botanical gardens, and nature reserves, including the Talamanca Reserve. The large commercial and market center of San Isidro de el General Perez Zeledon is 22 km by paved road. Pacific coast surf destination, Dominical, is 50 km (32 miles).
