Hello, I'm Maree. I’m originally from Australia, for more than 30 years I have been married to my Finnish Husband. Together we divide our time between Australia and Finland, Finland has become a second home to me, its nature and quiet magic captured my heart from the very beginning.
I’m an Interior designer with a love for creating warm, calming spaces where people can truly relax. Hosting feels like a natural extension of who I am. I genuinely enjoy nurturing others, making them feel welcome, and sharing the places that mean so much to me.
The Red Cottage on the River Kemi is one of those special places to me. I love inviting guests to experience the beauty of Lapland the way I do, the peaceful nature, the changing seasions, the cosy Nordic atmosphere, and the sense of calm that settles over you as soon as you arrive.
It brings me joy to know that guests can stay in a home I’ve thoughtfully created and feel the same warmth, comfort and connection to Finland that I feel myself.

We chose this area because it offers the perfect balance of tranquillity, beauty and convenience, something truly rare in Rovaniemi. The moment we discovered this property, we were struck by how peaceful it felt. Nestled along the River Kemi, surrounded by trees, wildlife and uninhabited islands, it has a sense of calm that instantly makes you breathe a little deeper and slow down.

What we loved most is that despite the privacy and natural setting, the location is incredibly central. Ounasvaara Ski Resort sits directly across the road, and the city centre, airport, restaurants, and attractions are only minutes away. It feels like having a secluded retreat in the heart of Lapland, where you can enjoy quiet mornings by the river, go for walks in the forest, or watch the Northern Lights from the backyard, yet still be close to everything.

The area is safe, quiet and beautifully connected to nature, with changing seasons that feel magical, golden autumns, snowy winters, and peaceful summer nights. It’s a place where you can experience Lapland the way it’s meant to be: serene, authentic and full of natural beauty.

As an interior designer, I’ve lovingly curated every room with high-quality furnishings, Scandinavian textures, soft ambient lighting and thoughtful touches that make the space beautiful, functional and inviting. Guests enjoy premium hotel-quality beds, cosy reading nooks, a fully equipped kitchen and bright living areas designed for relaxation after days spent exploring Lapland.

The location is exceptional: Ounasvaara Ski Resort sits directly across the road, and the river, forests and uninhabited islands create a peaceful, postcard-worthy backdrop from every window. In autumn the birches glow gold; in winter, snow blankets the landscape and the Northern Lights often dance right above the cottage.
