There is also the Olive Museum, showcasing the history of this important Greek product.
Pelion is a picturesque region nestled between the sparkling Aegean Sea and the majestic Mount Pelion. With its enchanting landscapes, charming villages, and rich history, Pelion offers a delightful blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences. Here are some of the top sights and activities to explore in this idyllic Greek destination:
Explore Volos (15km): Start your Pelion adventure in the vibrant city of Volos, the gateway to the region. Stroll along the scenic waterfront promenade, lined with cafes and restaurants, and admire the views of the sea. Visit the Archaeological Museum of Volos to discover the area's ancient past.
Pelion is famous for its traditional villages, each with its unique character and charm. Explore Makrinitsa (24km), often called the "balcony of Pelion," known for its stunning views. Wander through the cobblestone streets of Portaria (26km) and enjoy the traditional architecture. Don't miss Tsagarada (33km), surrounded by lush greenery and home to the famous centuries-old plane tree, known as the "Centaur's Plane Tree."
Hiking and Nature Trails: Pelion is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. Discover the diverse landscapes by embarking on one of the many scenic trails. The Centaurs' Path is a popular choice, taking you through forests, gorges, and traditional villages. Follow the ancient kalderimi (stone-paved footpaths) that connect the villages and immerse yourself in the region's natural beauty.
Pelion boasts a coastline dotted with enchanting beaches. Head to Mylopotamos (38km), famous for its turquoise waters and rocky surroundings. Visit Papa Nero (40km), a sandy beach embraced by verdant cliffs. For a more secluded experience, explore Fakistra Beach (38 km), hidden in a small bay and surrounded by lush vegetation.
Skiing in Winter: If you visit Pelion during the winter months, you can enjoy skiing and winter sports at the Agriolefkes Ski Center (30km). Nestled on the slopes of Mount Pelion, this ski resort offers breathtaking views and a range of slopes suitable for beginners and experienced skiers alike.
Traditional Cuisine: Indulge in the delicious flavors of Pelion's traditional cuisine. Try local specialties such as bougiourdi (spicy cheese dip), spetzofai (sausage with peppers), and tsipouro (a traditional alcoholic beverage). Don't forget to sample the region's famous sweet preserves, including spoon sweets made from local fruits.
Cultural Events and Festivals: Pelion hosts various cultural events throughout the year. Experience the Pelion Summer Festival, featuring music and theatrical performances in stunning outdoor venues. Join the celebrations during the Feast of Agios Taxiarchis in September, where the village of Tsangarada comes alive with traditional music, dance, and food.
