Catalan Bay, known in Spanish as âLa Caletaâ, is a small bay and fishing village in Gibraltar on the eastern side of the Rock.
During the nineteenth century only fishermen were permitted to live in Catalan Bay. They were required to have a fishing permit granted to them by the Governor and only a limited number of permits were issued.
The families who live in the village today are mainly descendants of these Genoese fishermen and are colloquially known as âCaleteñosâ. Catalan Bay is home to the Seawave restaurant and the church of Our Lady of Sorrows.
The round shaped rock which juts out into the sea is commonly known as âLa Mamelaâ the name given to it by the early Genoese settlers as it resembles a womanâs breast when viewed from the shore.
Lovely location for this property (it's the second time we've stayed but not the same property) and very clean and tidy. Unfortunately the bed and pillows were quite uncomfortable and there is no car parking nearby for overnight stays so this will put us off in the future.
What was not to like. Step out door to amazing beach. And everything inside better than a five star hotel. We was even in early than the time. If I had to pick and really pick that was shower door did not shut properly but easy to mop up a bit off water. Anyone thinking it over to book. Stop thinking get it booked the apartment and area will not disappoint you. Amazing place. And owner was helpful.
