The Neighborhood:
Epano Arhanes is a peaceful and picturesque village nestled among vineyards and olive groves, yet perfectly located for exploring the many cultural and natural treasures of central Crete. Just 9 km away is the legendary Palace of Knossos, the heart of Minoan civilization and a must-see archaeological wonder filled with vivid frescoes, royal chambers, and ancient myths. A 16 km drive brings you to Heraklion, the island’s vibrant capital and cultural hub. Here, you can start your visit at the world-famous Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home to the most important collection of Minoan artifacts anywhere, including the mysterious Phaistos Disc and the stunning Snake Goddess figurines. Wander through the historic center to discover the imposing Venetian-era Koules Fortress at the old harbor, the elegant Morosini Fountain in Lions Square, and the Loggia, now Heraklion’s city hall but once a gathering place for Venetian nobles. Heraklion also offers a wide selection of shops, cafés, and traditional tavernas, where you can sample local delicacies such as lamb with stamnagathi, fresh seafood, or bougatsa pastries. The Natural History Museum of Crete and the Historical Museum of Crete provide further insights into the island’s diverse past and ecology, and families with children will enjoy the interactive exhibits. Back in Arhanes, hiking up nearby Mount Giouchtas (2 km away) offers sweeping views and a chance to explore one of Crete’s most sacred mythological sites, believed to be the resting place of Zeus. Local wineries such as Boutari, Lyrarakis, and Paterianakis (within 5–10 km) offer wine tastings and tours through beautiful vineyards. The village itself is full of charm, with cobbled alleys, traditional architecture, and excellent tavernas serving local wines and Cretan specialties. For a day at the beach, the sandy shores of Amnissos and Karteros are about 20 km away, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. Other nearby attractions include the village of Peza (25 km), known for its olive oil and wine production, and several Byzantine chapels and rural museums scattered throughout the region. Whether you’re drawn to ancient history, culinary delights, nature, or simply the warm hospitality of Crete, Epano Arhanes offers a perfect base for exploration and relaxation alike.
