À propos de la location

A colorful mexican casita nestled in the heart of the historical center

Welcome to La Puerta Rosada. Our unique two bedroom two bath home is nestled in one of San Miguel de Allende’s oldest and most colorful neighborhoods within the UNESCO historical center. Situated on a narrow cobblestoned lane two blocks above the main market, La Puerta Rosada is the perfect house for the young at heart and adventuresome traveler, so don't forget to bring some good walking shoes. This beautiful Mexican Casa evokes old world charm and coziness.
From the wood burning Pueblo inspired fireplace in the main living room, to the open air terrace with its profusion of native plants and cacti overlooking the town and churches. La Puerta Rosada is built on five gentle levels, with each room on its own floor. Each floor only few steps up from the previous one. Every room is beautifully and tastefully decorated in contemporary Mexican style. From the front door you step directly into the main living room, with its Icapalli Furniture and comfortable built in window seating. Here you will also find the flat screen, wall mounted cable TV, internet and a telephone for local calls. Also, depending upon the weather this is where you will put our woodburning fireplace to good use. A few steps up from the living room, our fully functional and equipped kitchen with a pass through window into the living room. You will find traditional dinnerware and contemporary appliances, all designed for ease of use and your enjoyment. Stepping through the kitchen door to the next level is our first en suite, simply and tastefully arranged and decorated. You will find a comfortable double bed, a beautiful antique Mexican armoire, as well as artwork from local artists. Up the stairs is our open air terrace, complete with an umbrella shaded mosaic table and wrought iron cushioned chairs . It’s profusion of plants and outstanding view makes this patio a haven for morning breakfasts and romantic evening sunsets, as well as a great sunbathing spot. A few more steps up and you find the master en suite, with its magnificent view of San Miguel de Allende. This very private bedroom at the top of the house has a comfortable double bed a writing desk for the budding novelist, a built in closet and artwork from local artists. La Puerta Rosada is located in Barrio del Tecolote, an unpolished gem of San Miguel de Allende. Part of the historical center, it is a small Mexican village within the larger town. One of the oldest neighborhoods, Tecolote is unique in San Miguel due to its narrow cobblestone streets, or "callejones" -- wide enough for a burro, but not for a car. While most El Centro has been gentrified, with the sound of cars and buses, night clubs and revelers, replacing those of old Mexico, Tecolote retains its authentic flavor. families still live here and children play in the streets. Roosters greet the sun daily. Dogs alert the neighborhood to strangers on the callejones. Tecolote is not for everybody. Walking is required, and some of the alleys are steep. Fortunately, if you are open and smile, the local kids will gladly help you with your bags for a small tip. And a little bit of walking is worth it, if you want to experience a bit of Old Mexico in the heart of one of Mexico's most beautiful colonial towns. While San Miguel centro is charming with its beautifully restored mansions, the pedestrian only nature of tecolote has slowed the gentrification.

A little piece of Mexico

  • 4 de 5

Andy and Dorothy's description of the property is very accurate, and the pictures represent the reality: we enjoyed coming home to our little casita after a day exploring, and appreciated the gas fireplace, as well as portable heaters (San Miguel can sometimes be very cold in Jan.) Plus, the beds are fabulous!

The binder they provided with information (phone numbers, medical contacts, transportation around town, restaurants etc.) was very helpful, and any questions we emailed were promptly answered. It was also a treat to have maid service.

The steep cobblestone streets in the area can sometimes mean precarious and tiring walking, but taxis are inexpensive for the uphill trip home from the centro.

My friend and I will fondly remember La Puerta Rosada.

Good value-great view from up the hill

  • 4 de 5

This is a lovely property- kept clean with maid service MWF. It is a healthy climb and in a neighborhood, so be prepared for roosters crowing and dogs barking at all hours- part of the charm to us! Each of the two bedrooms has its own bathroom with shower, but the upper bedroom has the view! Full wall of sliding glass doors through which you can see the parochia (main church). There are several small groceries within a 5 minute walk, but honestly, wwe didn't cook much at home because restaurant and street food are so cheap and delicious! Andy and Dorothy were great communicators, helpful owners and genuinely nice folk! They are honest in their advertising- be prepared for stairs to both bedrooms and the fine patio. It's a 10-15 minute walk to the main center and church, plenty of things to do!

delightful vacation

  • 4 de 5

We stayed at Casaazteca for six weeks this year and were very pleased with everything about the house. Having stayed in many other houses over the years , we truly appreciated that the house was recently painted and was very clean and colorful. Some of the outstanding features were the upstairs bedroom in which we could lie in bed at night and have a spectacular view of the lighted Parroqia and the town. The mattresses are new and firm and very comfortable. The house is well equipped with washer, dryer, FLAT SCREEN TV and just about everything you might want in the kitchen Our hosts, Andrew and Dorothy, were very nice and most accomodating with any of our requests. We found the location excellent--took me 9 minutes at a moderate pace to walk to the Jardin--and I'm 77 years old. The walk back is steep only for a short distance . The callejon (little street) on which the house is situated is in a mostly Mexican area tho with a good sprinkling of gringos. The street has charm with kids of all ages hanging out-a family Mexican neighborhood. Unfortunately the cleanliness of the street leaves something to be desired Thank you Andrew and Dorothy.

For those who live within a very limited lifestyle

  • 1 de 5

The photographs of the property had to be taken with an extremely wide lens.....no charm nor warmth within this property located in a very dark, narrow lane. The property managers, who are more than welcoming, need to screen their potential renters as this casita is not destined for travelers who expect comforts. After a number of days (and we had a paid for a whole month's rental) we moved out and were never re-imbursed for the appx. 21 days we did not stay, adding an additional tab to re-locate. If you are a backpacker looking to having a shelter, this might be your option. Basically clean with good maid service yet still does not make-up for the neighbourhood nor the ambiance within. Would not recommend to any of our friends as it does not meet any of our lifestyles.

Réponse du propriétaire: Just a few observations in response to Margot’s review. La Puerta Rosada was photographed with a normal lens by a professional photographer, and by no means exaggerates the size of the house. We even include the square footage of the house in our description so that there should be no surprises. The house is minimally furnished that was, and is, the look that we wished to achieve, but as far as comfort goes, that is, as we all know, extremely subjective. That being said the bed mattresses are all brand new, as is the upholstery on the chairs and living room seating area, and we have only been so far complimented on the original artwork and color palate of the house. We were very surprised to hear that suddenly it lacked warmth. We are on a Callejon. A Callejon is a narrow pedestrian ally, often cobbled, very typical in Mexico, and depending on the time of day and weather it will be sunny, wet, dark, warm, cold, shadowy or brightly lit. What else can we say? As far as screening people that is an almost impossibility, we would not dare to presume what people like. We put up photos and a description of the house and let the potential guests decide what is best for them. Upon leaving two of her party went on to stay at the Rosewood Hotel, the most expensive hotel in San Miguel and Margot and her sister moved to a B and B which offered Yoga and cooking classes, and the camaraderie of like minded tourists, a very different environment and budget to a 50 dollar a night two bedroom house in one of SMA’s oldest districts. In our description of the house we do say that it is best suited for the young at heart and adventuresome traveler, almost all of our guests of all ages have fallen into this category as our reviews show. Margot and her guests did not, that is unfortunate. Reading the write up on vacation property rentals carefully is extremely important. It is not wise to just go by price alone especially here in San Miguel. We have outfitted and priced La Puerta Rosada carefully, and tailored it to appeal to the budget conscious traveler, something that we feel we have achieved. Finally, because we were under a "strict" cancellation policy with her even though she did not stay there for the duration, we could not rent out the house again for that time period, hence we could not refund the difference.

Quaint, colorful — a steal for the price!

  • 5 de 5

I admit that I was a bit worried about what I’d get for this price, but the house is just as pictured. It’s not luxurious (lots of other boutique options in town if that's what you're seeking), but it’s comfortable. Best of all, it's colorful and charming, located in a real neighborhood of narrow cobblestone passageways rather than a hotel zone, yet still very close to all the action. (We could get to restaurants and such in 10 minutes, and that was walking with toddlers.)

We were pleasantly surprised that street parking was easy to find near the property, and we didn't even need to parallel park. The owners -- Americans who have been in San Miguel for over a decade -- were gracious in helping us haul our stuff up a small hill. Yes, you have to trek uphill to get to this property, but it's San Miguel -- inclines would be hard to avoid no matter where you stayed. We didn't need to contact the owners during our stay, but I felt confident that if any questions or issues came up, they would have been ready and willing to help.

The photos didn't fully prepared me for the home's layout, so let me describe that a bit. Basically, the living room and kitchen are together and what you see when you enter the front door. You then go out a back door and up a short set of stairs to one bathroom and bedroom. Up another short set of outside stairs takes you to the patio, and yet another short set of outside stairs takes you to the second bedroom and bathroom. We loved the indoor/outdoor vibe. (Though it worked great for us, note that it might not be ideal for all families of small children due to so many steps, railings with wide gaps, etc.)

We really have no complaints. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this home to anyone coming to San Miguel.

Beyond our expectations

  • 5 de 5

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by the charm and comfort of this casita. Situated high up on an a hill with great views from the terrace and master bedroom, it is still only a couple of blocks from the centro historico. Easy access to most of what San Miguel has to offer. Andy and Dorothy were very gracious, and even brought me a homeopathic solution for my stomach ailment. Everything we could have hoped for.
