Beautiful quaint cottage, outstanding views from each room, well furnished, everything we needed
Hayfield is a very pretty village with an abundance of pubs, restaurants and teashops, a quick stroll from the quaint cottage where we stayed. We did 3 beautiful walks which were all from Hayfield, hardly used our car which is great. The cottage was at the top of a steep hill, very quiet and peaceful, we bbq'd and sat outside until late evening. we visited quite a few of the pubs which were all very friendly. the cottage was very well stocked, the owners requests were very well explained, and we would definitely return again, we have never been to the Peak District before and there is so much more to explore
"hardly used our car" is the key element in this review. How unusual is that in this day and age? To go on holiday and be quite happy using the amenities of Hayfield village which are 3 minutes walk down the hill. To be able to access fabulous walks from the doorstep is also a big plus. And finally the residents are all so friendly because we love living here! Thank you for a lovely review.
Ideal for a family get-together!
"Peak Retreat" is a lovely comfortable house in a delightful village, with plenty of room for our "family gathering" .As our sons are both teachers, we find it difficult to get together except in the School Holidays, so it was a real bonus to find a large property that was available for a "mid-week break" in August. We had a very happy time here - plenty of places to eat and drink nearby, although we made good use of the wonderfully spacious living/dining area for family meals together. Lots to do during the day as well - the children's playground in Hayfield, although it takes a bit of finding, is well worth a visit, and the old railway-line trail is excellent for a level walk.
Great location and perfect size property for our family gathering
Superb location in the heart of peak district. Good facilities and close to nearby village, with wealth of information provided on things to do in area. Our family had a wonderful time!
Spacious retreat with Peak views
Peak Retreat offers plenty of room to accommodate 9 people comfortably - the sleigh beds in the twin room might be more comfortable for children, but our 20 and 13 year old boys were fine in them. Having 3 bathrooms is a luxury, too. The kitchen was more than generously filled with cutlery and crockery and the dining area was perfect for a large group.
We loved sitting on the front porch, sheep in the field opposite and peak views all around. This is because Peak Retreat sits at the top of a hill, which if you are there for walking won't be too challenging. And it is an excellent base for walks - from your doorstep you can choose the more strenuous Kinder Scout trek (9 miles / 6 hours, with fabulous views on a good day, followed by a well-deserved drink in the Sportsman Pub on the way home), or the flatter, forested Sett Valley Trail to New Mills. Hayfield offers several pubs with good food, so again no need to drive anywhere. Hardly any distance by car you can get to other wonderful villages (Castleford, Bakewell)) or to the larger Buxton, Stockport or Manchester, not forgetting the many reservoirs and caverns (we thoroughly enjoyed Pooles Cavern, Buxton).
Peak Retreat is a lovely property in a great location. We thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Thank you, Louise!
Fantastic location - loved our holiday!
We loved the large kitchen/diner as a central hub for activities. Property a little difficult with 3 pushchairs but I suppose that is not the norm - the killer hill at the end of the day was always a challenge! Property had everything we needed and layout was great. A little concerned about the wall in the back garden - kept the kiddies a way from that! The village was lovely - idyllic place! Would definitely recommend!
Peak Retreat being at the top of a hill gives it both the stupendous views and the peace and quiet away from the village below. I can see that transporting small children uphill in pushchairs would be hard work. Apart from installing a ski tow I can't really see how to make it an easier journey. However I was relieved to see it did not spoil your holiday - just think of the extra calories burnt!
A high percentage of our guests come for the brilliant hiking and walking that Hayfield and the surrounds have to offer - so one more incline at the end of the day doesn't make too much difference. The fact you are sharing the countryside with your children at such a young age can only bode well for their future. Bring them back when they are a bit older and can appreciate what you are doing for them.
Many thanks for your custom.
Delightful cottage very private,outstanding views
Ticked all the boxes, ideal location, steep hill but we were forewarned! Beautiful views out of all windows, well stocked and furnished, would definitely return and recommend to others! There was an old tatty brochure with the best 10 walks locally, it was a godsend! We had some fabulous walks and the abundance of local pubs were welcome. one minor point was that the guest towels were not out in the bathrooms and we only found them in plastic bags near the end of the holiday!
Just to say that we put the towels in the bedrooms rather than the bathrooms then folk can choose what colour they would like and then stick with that towel throughout their stay. Its a bit like marking your wine glass at a party!!! We wrap them in plastic as they come back from the laundry that way and it keeps them clean if not used.
The 10 best walks book is now out of print and we are not sure why that is? You can see by the condition of it that it is by the far most used pamphlet out of the whole file box! I am glad that you had so many enjoyable walks using it.
