This property had so much working for it. Location: 5 star; Cleanliness: 5 star; VRBO website & owner response: 5 star. So why the overall 3 star rating and the reason we will not be return guests?
1.The rock wall that (unless you are standing up) blocked the most outstanding views of the coastline one can imagine.
2. (And the main reason) It was so uncomfortably hot. Only one bedroom had adequate AC. The other two had wheeled/portable units that were completely out of their league. According to the thermostat reading, the room temp was at least 82 when we went to bed at 10 pm and it never got below 77 degrees which, by the way, was the (nighttime) low outside temperature. So the AC was doing no better than that. For us, sleeping and sweating just don't go together. We knew there was no AC in the kitchen and living room area. We learned a lesson there too. The description said that AC wasn't necessary there because of all the windows, fans (there were 8 of those), and trade winds. Don't depend on that to be true. And, if you plan to cook, don't. We had planned to cook most of our meals in the house but after the first meal that plan went straight into the can. With the added heat from the cooktop. It was just too miserably hot. By the way, I checked to see and the weather during our stay was not unseasonable warm. The high outside, daytime temp our entire stay was a nice 80-83 degrees.
So, bottom line: If you don't mind sweating this place is perfect.
The rock seawall is about waist high to an adult, and any shorter would be a safety issue. The shoreline beyond the seawall has unpredictable waves and is not safe for children.
For the AC issue, all I can ask is that guests PLEASE let us know about problems as they come up. We can't fix an issue if we only hear about it after you leave. When we received this review, we went to the house and checked the ACs. The filters were clean and they were cooling normally, so we were unable to replicate the problem.
Right on the water
This house is in a wonderful position. The mornings are fresh and the air filled with salt. The afternoons are amazing - each sunset unique. We were surprised by the visit of a turtle on two occasions, right out in front of the house!
It is lovely to be able to sit outside in the mornings and afternoons. The view is ever changing. In fact, if it weren't for the Merrie Monarch highlights on each night we would not have turned on the TV!
The house does tend to heat up in the afternoons/evenings and so bedrooms can be rather warm.
The location was perfect for our family. We were able to go to the beaches and snorkel, we saw the flipper of a whale from the back deck ( although Binoculars would have been nice). All in all, even though the master bedroom a/c was not cooling, we had a great time. We called the owner and they were very prompt to replace the unit.
The only caution I would say, was that when you receive your welcome booklet two weeks before your stay, you are told that you are suppose to wash the sheets and towels before you leave! when you are busy on your last day and trying to check out by 11:00, it just puts a damper on your last day. This was a surprise to me as the $299 cleaning deposit is not refundable. I have rented VRBO's before and have never had this request. Just a heads up.
