Falsely advertised, total scam
We were so looking forward to a few days in Maine with our three children. It being August, we made sure to find a house on HomeAway with all the amenities a summer stay requires - including air conditioning. In addition to comfort, we have an asthmatic son whose symptoms can be triggered by heat and humidity. We were shocked to find when we arrived that the house we rented which was listed as air conditioned, in fact, was not. The air outside was 95 degrees that day. The air inside was 97 degrees. After reaching out to the owner, who was unresponsive for several hours, we got in touch with a person who cleans the house. I even offered to install window units if she could just get them to us somehow. No luck. So we packed up and spent the week at a nearby hotel. We salvaged the vacation, and all I wanted was my money back for a house rental we didn't use because it did not have the amenities it promised us. Alas - the owner now refuses to refund us. So not only does this owner want you to pay for amenities she doesn't provide, apparently she also wants us to pay for a rental that was not used because of the misleading listing. BEWARE OF THIS LISTING! STAY ELSEWHERE!
Lots of space, quiet
Some girlfriends and I rented this home for a long weekend in beautiful Portland, ME! While a little outside of downtown, the home location was peaceful and beautiful. Just a short drive to the action of downtown Portland. The home offers plenty of space for a larger group and was comfortable for our needs. The home is on the minimalist side and lacked the extra touches sometimes provided by home rentals like soap, shampoo, a guidebook for the area and instructions for things around the house (including checkout). In addition, the listing mentions A/C, but if it exists we couldn’t find it. Luckily the weather was gorgeous and we could open the windows. Some of the furniture had small stains. While we didn’t cook, the home had a large remodeled kitchen that would be perfect for home cooked meals. I had some difficulty getting check in intructions in a timely manner, but it all worked out!
Close enough for fun, far enough to relax
Four of my friends and I traveled from all over the east coast to spend a weekend away from our responsibilities watching the opening round of the World Cup and eating seafood in Portland. That is exactly what we did and we couldn't have been happier with where we stayed.
This house itself is large and comfortable with plenty of places to sleep and relax. We grilled out for lunch a few times and enjoyed a wonderfully nice kitchen for breakfast. The location was great for us because it was secluded enough that we felt removed from everything and relaxed but it was close enough to Portland that we could take an Uber or taxi to and from when we wanted to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife. There's a Shaw's about a mile or so from the house that we went to to stock up on food and supplies when we first arrived as well as a Starbucks and such when we needed a bit more than the house Keurig.
I would absolutely come back here again for a full vacation or weekend get-a-way with friends or family.
Packed up to move
Home in great location and if as advertised would have been great.
The fact is it was for sale, and presented like it was not being used or maintained; generally dusty and in some areas dirty. The toilet in the master was broken. Much of the kitchen was packed up with fewer coffee cups than bedrooms, minimal cutlery. The contact person showed up on arrival with some soap, towels and linen. Also attempted to install a new modem. Even with that there was no Wifi or cable throughout our stay. Surprisingly there was an open house scheduled during our stay that was subsequently cancelled. Luckily the location did allow us to easily explore Portland and the surrounding area and overall still enjoy our time there.
