Wonderful place to relax!
Picherre truly is a superb property that proved to give us the absolute perfect, relaxing holiday that we wanted! We have stayed in seven different locations in France over the last eight years and we all had to agree that Picherre has now become our favourite!
The house is lovely, impeccably clean and very well equipped, but it is the outside that is really beautiful and so well maintained! Sitting on the balcony each morning while sipping coffee and listening to the birds all around was an absolute pleasure.
The pool is great, with lots of seating and space around it and we spent most of our days relaxing in the beautiful setting, while the kids played endlessly in the water. We used the BBQ most nights and enjoyed sitting out in the covered seating area. The access to the river is brilliant, being just at the bottom of the garden. We found it very easy to take our kayaks out, enjoying many hours of fun on the gentle river Lot.
We like to cycle and run and found some really good routes that were manageable for the whole family straight on the door step.
We really enjoyed the tour and wine tasting at Chateau La Gineste, kids included and bought several boxes to take home. A meal out at Le Caillau was a lovely evening and visiting Cahors and many of the lovely villages in the area filled up our days.
We would like to say a big thank you to Christian and his family for our wonderful stay at Picherre and also to Kevin and Sandra who gave us such a warm welcome and keep everything immaculate insuring that our holiday was outstanding.
Rachel, Howard, Jerry & Gracie.
Thank you Rachel & Howard for taking the time to write such a lovely review. We are really pleased that the major improvements we have made to the outside of the house in past couple of years have been such a hit this summer. You sound like you had a great time with your sporting activities. The roads and paths around Picherre are great to cycle, run or walk along as there is so little motor traffic. We are so glad that you had such a wonderful holiday and hope that you will come back and stay with us again. Thank you also for leaving the house so clean and tidy - Kevin and Sandra were ever so grateful.
A beautiful getaway.
We’ve just returned from a lovely week at this beautiful farmhouse. It was an idyllic setting on the banks of the river Lot. The property was immaculate on arrival and had everything we needed. We were blessed with good weather so spent much of the time by the pool or playing games in the shade of the sheltered eating area. We took our inflatable kayak onto the river and watched the kingfishers and buzzards. The supermarket was a 15 minute drive away and we cycled to Duravel each morning for fresh pastries. That was the extent of our explorations-we had everything we needed for a perfect week. We have stayed in many properties at home and abroad but this is the loveliest so far. I hope we will be able to return.
Thank you Caroline for your kind and informative review. As you have written, there is plenty to do in and around Picherre if you simply want to stay put and have a relaxing week. It would be great to see again at Picherre for another relaxing break.
A relaxing family holiday in a beautiful setting
We returned last week from spending the most fantastic two week family holiday at Picherre. My husband is a keen fisherman so her drove with his parents and fishing equipment, and took the Dover - Calais crossing. Myself, my mum and two children aged 4 & 6 decided to fly, even though Bergerac was a closer airport we found flights much cheaper to Limoges. We all arrived at Picherre on the Saturday evening, it was a lovely warm evening and the setting was just perfect. Surrounded by fruit trees, fields of corn, lavender and beautiful weeping willows. We found Picherre easy to find, we loved that it was safe and quiet. We spent most of our days lazing by the pool and exploring the local area. We were very lucky as we had two full weeks of sunshine, most days were 36 degrees, my husband liked to fish early in the morning until around mid day and sometimes in the evenings as he found it too hot in the afternoon. It was the first time he had river fished, and it did not disappoint, a highlight of the trip was a 100lb catfish! after wrestling it up to the top of the bank we got a few pictures before putting it back. We found the kitchen very well equipped and enjoyed to cook as well as eating out. We mainly shopped at Lidl, and E. Leclerc, both in Montayral. as well as Intermarche in the neary village of Puy-l Eveque. There is also a lovely restaurant in Puy-l-Eveque called Henry which we had two great meals. My daughter turned 6 during our trip and Christian recommended 'Buffalo Grill', it was really family friendly, great burgers, cocktails and mixed grills and lots of goodies for the children. During the end of our meal the waitress came out with a giant chocolate cake, and the restaurant sang Happy Birthday, she was so happy! We liked to visit the nearby village of Prayssac for coffees and a wander around, and also had a lovely day out in Cahors. The children liked to play on the park at Capfun. A must see during your stay is a visit to Chateau Gineste at the top of the road, the owner Gerard speaks great English and gave us a little tour with wine tasting, he even gave my daughter a bottle from her birth year to open when she is 18!! We were able to bring two boxes back to the UK. We celebrated our 10yr wedding anniversary during our stay, my husband cooked me a lovely lunch on the terrace and Christian even arranged to have a bottle of Champagne dropped off, which we found very thoughtful. A perfect end to a perfect holiday.
Thank you Laura for your fantastic review. It sounds that you a busy fortnight - I hope that you had time to relax! I'm glad that the Buffalo Grill was a hit. Your husband's catch is largest I have heard of from the many anglers that have stayed at Picherre. I'll post the picture on the website and see if anyone takes up the challenge.
Large family house with quiet setting and superb outside space
We have now visited twice and since our first visit the house has been further improved around the pool and BBQ areas with lovely covered seating (complete with inflatable crocodile). In short, a perfect house for families or large groups which I would book again without hesitation. There is also a vineyard at the top of the drive who do excellent tastings.
Thank you Ed for the great review. Yes, a lot of developments have taken place in the last three seasons that have further improved Picherre. There are even more enhancements planned for the future. I'm glad that you had such a good time - maybe the inflatable crocodile will have a mate the next time you visit!
A gem of a place in rural France
The photos don’t really do Picherre any justice. The moment you turn down the walnut tree lined track from Chateau Gineste you realise you’ve arrived somewhere rather special. It is indeed surrounded by vineyards and literally acres of space. A really characterful traditional building which I guess used to be a barn. Comfortably appointed with decent size kitchen and living area which made for easy living for our group of 10 - certainly plenty of space to chill out and play. Great pool and really well thought out areas to relax whether under the shaded area by the pool or bbqing in the pergola in the evening. Plenty of wildlife to enjoy too - we were treated to the songs of the buzzards(?) passing deer and the fish jumping in the river. Advice to anyone planning on going - Visit Chateau Gineste earlier in your holiday and stock up on the tremendous organic wine. Gerard brought wine making to life.
Activities. Hired road bikes from velodulot and had some great fun cycling the local roads upto Floressas, Luzech and Cahors. Also pleasant local tracks for running or gentle cycling by following gravel path round to Touzac. Castle Bonaguil a hit with the kids as were the caves of Padirac. Whilst it’s a bit of a drive, Rocamadour stunning at night. Kids also loved the high wire adventures of happy forest.fr, I’m still recovering. Great pictures at top of Col de Crayssac. Satnav a must. Personal highlight was the Wed market in Luzech, sat at the cafe drinking great coffee, sampling the delights of the Boulangerie and taking in the sights. Did some fishing at the bottom of the garden and caught barbel. No catfish but did see a 6ft+ monster glide pass! Vowed to return for this alone.
Duravel’s local bar exploded into life on a couple of occasions during our stay....a French World Cup qualifier and the celebrations for Bastille day on our last night. Who knew there were some many locals and all very hospitable.
Our time passed too quickly in this magical spot. Thanks to Kevin and Sandra for all their help.
Paul, thank you writing such a nice and in-depth review. You have mentioned things that I had forgotten or did not existed in the region. I have never seen Rocamadour at night and the treetop ziplines are new to me and I’ll certainly be recommending in our brochure from now on. The trip to Col de Crayssac also sounds breath-taking. You certainly did a great deal during your stay and have given future guests a great insight of what to do when holidaying at Picherre – thank you very much.
