A little Rough
We are experienced travellers and were excited to stay at this low-key property in mid-February. We had a 3 night reservation.
However, this listing is missing some very important information. There is NO HOT WATER. The overall condition of the property is quite poor; table, chairs, hammocks are filthy. Furniture is limited, very well used and cannot be considered comfortable. The bedding is worn and stained. The bathroom requires a good cleaning and the red ants that appear nightly need to be controlled.
At the time of our booking the listing clearly stated that a 3 night stay came with a private drive from Quito. Since the owner does not own a vehicle that was not possible and he offered us bus tickets.
The owner offered to cater for us at a reasonable price. The first meal was pizza, it was both burnt and soggy, barley edible. The following morning the breakfast was nearly as bad. The coffee that the farm produces was done campfire style, there was no milk for the coffee - we finally had fresh cow’s milk only after the end of the 2nd day.
There is no light in the living area, only a single candle on the table. There are resident pets who wander freely, unfortunately the cat is up on the eating surfaces that don’t appear to be getting cleaned. It’s all rather unpleasant.
There are some terrific birding opportunities in the area. At the time of our stay the owner arranged with some local individuals to take us birding. Because we speak no Spanish we relied completely on the owner to make the arrangements. We were picked up very early as promised but from there everything went awry. Guides were provided without our knowledge. Yes, that did make for a wonderful day of birding but we had nothing to eat or drink from 5:30AM - 1PM except for what we were smart enough to bring for ourselves (we were told it would go until 10:30AM). There was no information provided that we’d be touring with guides and we barely had enough money to pay them. The price for the taxi drive that was arranged was also changed without our knowledge or consent. Having done the arrangements, it should have been up to the owner to ensure we knew what was happening.
Local hiking is lovely, bring rubber boots. This needs to be mentioned in the listing as it’s quite treacherous without them due to the mud. Alternatively they could be provided.
A number of improvements could make this a nice place to stay. Currently it is quite rough.
First we would like to say that we enjoyed having both of you as guests and we totally agree....this experience is not a $600 a night jungle lodge tourist trap! For any experienced traveler that you claim to be....our price alone should indicate that this is a "off the beaten path" experience.
We also had no idea that you were birders...nothing was mentioned to us about that untill you came to the farm. We were able to come up with a guide and driver to take you to Mashpi reserve where there is a famous lodge for $1000 a night to experinece the same birds that only cost you $50 for the trip.
The idea with our experience is to feel like a local...not a tourist. Water direct from the well to your cabin without the modern convenience of hot water (we are in the tropics so that should not be an issue). where natives normally shower in the late afternoon after a warm day of activitities is the norm here...this is not city life and definately not frozen Canada.. Nonetheless, we are going to install an electric water heater in the one cabin for guests. But...for those who really want the experience...we will leave the shower in the other cabin for guests with water straight out of the mountain!
We are here to translate into English but on this experience you will not see many other tourists and and the natives here do not speak English. I suppose if we charged $600 per night...we might be inclined to accompany you on excursions you wish to take at 5 30 in the morning. Your price only includes lodging and breakfast...and that is very clear online. Tours...meals....and incidentals are not covered.
As for the Pizza...it is artesenal made in a brick oven..not Dominos Pizza. I suppose you were extremely hungry...other wise you would not have eaten all of it! As for our cat and dog...yes they are part of the experience too...we have animals roaming around..domestic or wild. We are surprised you did not mention the morning Roosters or evening Frogs..You did not ride our mule!
It is always difficult to follow up with tourists that have paid $3,000 at a jungle lodge where it is all you can eat and choclate candies on the pillow every night to our humble true "Ecuadorian experience". We are WORKING FARM with Chocolate and Coffee....which you did not seem to be intereted in learning about. But....becuase we are in a great location...there is much more to see and do in the area! But it reminds me of the famous catch phrase..."Champagne tastes on a Budwiser budget
This rental provides complete and total privacy. A true hidden gem.
If you enjoy nature and locally sourced fruits and coffee, you’ll love Matthieu’s property. The meals that can be cooked for you by request are A+ on the quality level. Both Mathieu and his son are very knowledgeable of the property and area. Customized guide service can be provided for just about anything you’d like to see. More than just your average rental. Mathieu is a facilitator and will cater to you upmost needs. I will be returning.
Muchas Gracias! It was great having you Patrick and will be expecting your friends. It was our pleasure to accomodate you in the beautiful sub tropical zone of Pacto. And no other tourists!
