We have just spent a lovely week in your apartment, Which was very well equipped with everything we needed to make it a home from home. Although we stayed in the apartment in the height of the season the pool area was not crowded and the pool itself ,which is a must for our children was very well maintained and a nice temperature. Overall a great week and a good base for exploring the area.
Thank you Jane your review is much appreciated and we are glad you had a lovely time. Alistair
Very remote, apartment with incredible views but tiny toilet in a noisy tired building
The rooms are ok, views are amazing which is the main positive. Toilet is literally the size of an airplane toilet which we found off putting and not ideal for a family. The swimming pool
Is not on the property and the view you see of open land around the chateau is in fact out of bounds. The pool is shared by quite a few others although most days we were able we get a lounger. The double bed is very basic and is on a metal frame with wheels at the end so every time you move it makes a squeaky noise. Talking of noise, the neighbours were very loud and we heard every footstep (or stomp!) plus for the last 2 nights loud music disturbed our sleep. Honestly, I wouldn't stay here again or recommend to a family with kids. The outside eating area of stone table and bench was being used as a washing hanging space so we weren't able to easily eat outside.
Be aware this place is literally up a mountain and the town had only a bakery with reduced hours and a basic shop not selling fresh milk (and out of date ham!). Restaurant was ok but pricey for what it was.
Nearby lakes are nice. Carcassonne 25 mins away - go before lunch to visit La Cite as it gets impossibly busy after that.
The owners were fairly easy to contact before we arrived and during the payment stage but after that sadly there was a 4 day delay in responding to our email which was sent to them the day we arrived. Not good enough.
There is only a bob and microwave here not a 'proper oven' and we had no wifi or English to channels (the description said we would have 100 of them!).
Great base for the Carcassonne and Montaigne Noir
The property (1st floor) met our expectations very well. It was clean and tidy on arrival and possibly because of the thick stone walls of the building, it remained pleasantly cool, even in 36 degree heat. It was well-equipped (although a few more towels would not go amiss). There is a great view to the South from the windows. There is a communal swimming pool within 2 minutes walk and, although we didn't make use of it, it looked like it would have served well, had we opted to stay at the property during the day.
Carcassonne, to the South, is within easy reach as is Mazamet, to the North. Lac de Montaignes (on the road to Mazamet) and Lac de Jouarres (beside Homps, to the east) are not far away and both are excellent for swimming or sunbathing. Cuxac-cabardes, the nearby village, has a boulangerie, a small grocery shop and an hotel/restaurant. We didn't use this as we tended to spend our days away and had dinner at whatever location we had been visiting. The boulangerie and shop are both good.
The lawn to the South of the property is only available for occupants of ground floor apartments so holidaymakers intending to spend the day at the apartment do not have a dedicated outside area in which to sit. There is, however, space at the poolside.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it for up to 4 occupants (ideally, 2 adults and 2 (up to) late-teenagers - adults might find the 2nd bedroom a bit small).
The most relaxing holiday i have had in years
Well what can i say about this charming place.Stuart, the owner had supplied us with plenty of info when we made inquiries about the area but we were not prepared for what we found as we drove up the narrow lane to the proprty. The picture does it no justice, the views from the Petit château are absolutely stunning. After a long drive through the night to our destination we found the apartment to be nice and cool with the all important tea making facilities in place including milk already in the fridge. It didn't take us long to unpack the basics ie swimming gear and stroll up to the shared pool for a well earned dip. The rooms in the apartment were beautifully furnished and very clean with all the mod cons inc washing machine, cooker, microwave and tv with dvd player not that we wasted too much time indoors of course.
The surrounding countryside had plenty of well beaten paths to explore and for the more adventurous some great bicycle routes. Never too far away from the large town of carcasonne, about half hour drive for the serious shopper but the local village of Cuxac, about 5mins away had a small shop and the obligatory patisserie as well as a great restaurant which catered for most of our needs.
Most importantly we were looking for a place away from the madding crowds to relax and soak up some of the great scenery and we certainly found an abundance.
I wouldn't hesitate recommending this delightful place to anyone and am making plans to return again myself.
Thank you for your kind comments and you are more than welcome to return in the future.
Beautiful place for a relaxing break
We have recently returned from a wonderful holiday in your fantastic apartment. It was clean, comfortable and very well equipped - a real home from home. The views were just incredible - the photos don't do them justice - and most evenings were spent watching the light fade with a glass or two of wine.
The lovely pool was well maintained and a reasonable temperature and much enjoyed by our two children (aged 4 years and 16 months) and there were plenty of little paths through the woodland around the chateau for exploring. The local village was a friendly place with a small play area and football pitch and a river which kept the children entertained. The shop was reasonably stocked for picking up odds and ends and the boulangerie/ patisserie did wonderful bread and cakes. There were plenty of large supermarkets within reasonable striking distance too.
There was also plenty to do in the local area with Carcassonne the obvious attraction. We were lucky enough to be there over 14th July so were able to enjoy the fireworks over the Cite which were just spectacular. Other highlights included the Lac Du Montagne, other castles and a day at the beach.
Regarding booking arrangements, this couldn't have been easier. The owners replied very promptly to emails and were very happy to help with advice. Our deposit was also returned to us within 48 hours of our arrival home!
All in all the apartment provided a wonderful base from which to enjoy this beautiful part of France. The peace and quiet and beautiful views made for a very restful holiday but with plenty to keep us and the children occupied too. We returned feeling utterly relaxed and would definitely like to return to the apartment again.
Thank you for you comprehensive review. I am glad you had a wonderful time and hopefully you will come and stay again. Best wishes
