Family memories for life
Our family had an amazing time at the Lazy EL in mid-July. Our week there was the kick off of two weeks in Montana and Wyoming. This was our first time in this part of the US and our experience at the Lazy EL could not have been better. My family of five stayed in the Summer Cabin and had room to spare. The beds were very comfortable and rooms were all well appointed. Waking up in the master bed room to phenomenal views of the mountains to the south was a wonderful treat. Having drinks at the end of a busy day before dinner as we watched the sun start to go down was so relaxing. The views and vistas truly are breathtaking.
We hiked, rode horses, fished the West Rosebud River (Justin was a great guide), waded in the cool waters of the East Rosebud River on hot afternoons and just relaxed, read books and marveled at the views. The location was perfect for an afternoon at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and watching the rodeo in Cody, WY. Seeing the pig races at the nearby Bear Creek Saloon and Steakhouse was something our kids wont soon forget. And the town of Red Lodge nearby has great stores for poking around in and fun placed to get food. For those who need to be connected at all times, this is not the place for you. Thankfully, there was no cell coverage (we are AT&T) but there is wifi at the cook house which was perfect...connection if you really needed it but so easy to disconnect.
I cannot say enough about our hosts, Reg and Andy. They made us feel so welcome, answered all our questions, volunteered ideas and made sure we had a chance to appreciate their wonderful ranch. Their love and passion for the property and the region came through in so many ways.
Four Families Vacationed Together at the Lazy EL Ranch
Our gathering of 4 families at the Lazy EL Ranch for a week in July, 2016 was full of amazing activities and fellowship. We filled the Summer House, Stokke Cabin and Russell Cabin, then focused on the large Cook House to share all our meals, prepare for activities, play games and watch after-dinner family history slide shows. We stocked up at Costco in Billings, took turns cooking in the commercial kitchen, then ate inside and on the full porch with its Big Sky view. The cousins, ages 2-15, had a blast in and around the Cook House with spontaneous competitions and imaginings. The sunsets were amazing and we couldn’t stop gazing at the mountains from so many vantage points. The adults enjoyed late evening discussions on the Summer House porch.
We highly recommend the local outfitter who brought excellent horses to us at the Ranch so we could ride on trails, open pastures and in the woods on the 12,000 acres of Ranch property with its incredible hills and snow-covered mountain views. We also hiked and mountain biked to our limits, then cooled off by tubing in the pristine East Rosebud River. Our fishermen drove to the West Rosebud for memorable fly fishing despite a few rain showers. We all went whitewater rafting, splashing and cliff jumping just 15 miles north at Absarokee, MT. Twenty miles south in Red Lodge, MT, we all enjoyed the 4th of July Parade and the finale Rodeo from the covered grandstand (buy tickets well in advance online). We ate out just south of Red Lodge at the Bear Creek Saloon and Steakhouse where you can bet on the piglet races. We also ate at the Grizzly Bar in Roscoe, MT just 4 miles from the Ranch. Our hosts Reg, Andy and their son Jack were very helpful and responsive.
