This apartment is in a good location for several reasons. The "Time Out" Marketplace is a short walk and has numerous excellent food establishments at very reasonable prices. It can get very crowded, so try to go early. There are also many charming little restaurants in the area that we enjoyed discovering. It is walking distance to shopping of every variety, from high end designer stores to local boutiques. Walking in much of Lisbon is not for the faint at heart as it is very hilly with many stairs. If you are in good physical condition you should be able to walk to most of the sights with viewpoints and historical areas in the city. It is also easy walking distance to the train station for the train to Sintra, a place you must see while in Lisbon.
The location is probably the apartment's best feature, however there are some downsides to be aware of in regards to that. First, it gets very noisy at night with many late night revelers who've had too much to drink. There is also a bar/restaurant in the same building 2 floors directly below this apartment that adds to the night time noise. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday of our stay were quite noisy, but on Sunday and Monday it was much quieter. This is the trade off for the convenience of the location and it's good to be aware of that. After all, we can catch up on our sleep when we return home.
The apartment is in a very old building and reflects that. The stairs leading to the 3rd floor are narrow and steep, common in a building of its age. Be prepared for that if you are bring large luggage. We had only carry-on luggage and with Paolo's help were able to navigate the stairs on arrival without mishap. It has been painted and decorated and is basically clean, but could use better lighting in the living room for reading and more comfortable seating. Paolo and Rute were very responsive both prior to our arrival in answering the many inquiries we made, and during our stay. The electricity went out the first night we were there and Paolo responded right away letting us know the power company was working on fixing the problem. They also have photos in the apartment done by a photographer friend of theirs which we sought out at the Saturday flea market, purchasing several beautiful photos of Lisbon.
This is a way to live for a short time as locals do and we highly recommend it. You will see Lisbon in a unique way and gain a true appreciation for its culture and people. Enjoy the journey!
