We were welcomed by the host on arrival and had a lovely week at this beautiful house. So peaceful and rural, in the middle of beautiful scenery but with Rouillac, Jarnac, Cognac and Angouleme all in easy distance. The house was huge and had everything we needed. Enormous outdoor space with a fantastic pool which we used every day.
Huge house with some downsides
The house was huge, but the layout was not very good. There are two separate mezzanines, with a bathroom and 2 beds on one (only one very small one as a proper bedroom, the other was on the open mezzanine). The location of the other bedroom was up a separate stairs which meant a very long dark walk to the other end of the house to the downstairs loo in the night! This layout would not be convenient for families with small children
The staircase up to the bathroom mezzanine was stone and without any banister, so not suitable for small children, as the drop was onto a stone floor. Bit scary for adults too!
The kitchen was very dark, and a bit sticky! There was no kettle when we arrived, but the owner remedied this by giving us hers. There was also no proper oven, just as small oven grill thing which limited what we could cook - no big round pizzas! There was loads of kitchen stuff, but not many bowls! Also there was absolutely NO cleaning stuff. No soap, washing up liquid, bleach, toilet stuff, cloths, etc.
The bathrooms were a bit basic - no shower curtain or shower head holder on the one upstairs. The shower downstairs was OK, but it was very difficult to arrange the shower curtain so you didn't flood the floor.
The house is in a village, with the nearest shops within a short drive away (nothing in Marieul). The church clock struck every hour and half hour even through the night - which was a bit annoying as it started doing the hour twice! Bit noisy.
The cleaning charge is not optional and is E80. Other than the sticky kitchen and the dusty sofas in the billiard table room, the place was clean.
The pool was not very deep and quite old, with a wooden lip round it which gave one of the children a huge splinter in her foot, but it was in the sun most of the day.
The location was good to explore the area. Cognac and Jarnac are lovely, and it is less than 2 hours to the coast. The market in Royan was great.
We had a lovely stay, but I must admit I was pleased to get back to my lovely shower at home!
