The setting for property was very peaceful and off the beaten path but it had all the conveniences of home. The lake is very clean and hardly any boat traffic. however, not many beach type areas, there is 1 section by the campground. Loons and eagles were daily sightings along with geese, ducks and herons. The kayaks, stand-up boards were a lot of fun and there was also a row boat to use. there were no issues with the house and the owner ws right next door to answer any questions. It was the perfect place to unwind and get away from it all. I recommend this place to anyone.
Beautiful location and surroundings.
Cottage location is beautiful and the view from the deck is amazing. The neighborhood is quiet and serene, yet full of nature.
Inside the cottage one would find everything necessary for a trip away from a busy city life. But you will not find wifi, tv or good phone reception. A moldy and dusty old smell welcomes you inside but it dissipates in time. Beds are comfortable only you have to bring your own bed sheets. Kitchen has all the regular utensils, a bit dirty, the fridge was big but we had to clean the interior. The stove was very good.
Water saving was the motto of the cottage, therefore short showers and no laundry was the norm.
The lake is beautiful, clean and only a handful of people are using it. Water from the deck is sandy and shallow, you could only swim from 10 yards away.
If you respect nature and the owners you will like it there. With all the lack of amenities from a five star hotel you will find in the entire experience other qualities that no hotel could offer.
And that's why we didn't go to a hotel.
A Gem of a Place
If you are seeking a woodsy, lakefront vacation rental that showcases natural beauty on a quiet lake that has it all, this is the place to stay. The A-frame pine cabin/house is very clean, well stocked, very comfy and homey, and well maintained. We found it to be the perfect size for 4 people. A spacious deck and and living room with large windows provide gorgeous views of the lake, natural habitat, and evening sunsets. Especially appealing to my family and me are everything Lake Avery has to offer. My family and I are “water” people, and we also appreciate natural beauty and wildlife. We spent most of our time in and on the water, enjoying the swimming, fishing, (bass and pike), boating, kayaking, and watching from afar the families of geese and loons. Although we brought up our own fishing boat, we used the very nice kayaks and balance boards the owner supplies - - all were in tip top shape. The owners gave us all of the privacy we desired, but were responsive when we notified them of a water pump issue (they had to bring in a technician over the 4th of July holidays, which, no doubt, was costly and no easy feat). The owners get a well-deserved 5-star rating all the way around.
A perfect cabin that defines tranquility; the "up north" experience I remembered (and needed)!
My family and I knew we were in for a great week when we approached the just-wide-enough-for-our-car bridge and drove the final hundred yards or so to this beautiful, well maintained, just rustic enough cabin.
We arrived late in the day on one of the hottest days of the summer, so the cabin was a little toasty, but positioning the fans and opening the windows cooled things down nicely, and the cabin was comfy the rest of the trip, even as temps hit the low-mid 90s. This cabin is furnished and maintained well enough as to have made us feel right at home, but not to the point where we felt like we were staying in someone else's house in the suburbs. You definitely know you are staying in a cabin on the lake (in the best possible way). Beds and other furniture were quite comfortable, and the kitchen was very clean and had just about everything we needed.
This is a quiet spot on a big, but quiet lake. Don't remember a single jet ski buzzing around, and the few speedboats and pontoon were very respectful of the north half of the lake with all of the cabins (visited my sister's place on another lake near Cheboygan the same trip and you'd have thought there were boat races going on!). Water was the perfect temperature for wading/swimming (though a bit weedy in front of the cabin) and the fish were biting right off the dock. We made great use of the kayaks and paddle board, as well as the row boat. The water is crystal clear and we loved watching the fish and turtles swim away beneath us as we paddled above them.
Very close to Lewiston, so you can run in to town and hit a decently-sized supermarket and stock up without taking up your whole day.
Definitely got the impression that most of those on and around Avery Lake are owners, not renters, leading to a very serene and friendly environment.
My work makes it really difficult to completely unplug, so it was nice to have decent Verizon service from the front of the house/deck.
The only knock against the entire experience was the need to bring our own towels/linens (we flew in from Oregon so had to pack an extra bag), but aside from the extra piece of luggage, it wasn't that big of a deal.
The owner, Daniel, was incredibly responsive when we had trouble immediately finding the paddle board. Even had the opportunity to meet his wife Cheryl and invite her over for a cook out! She gave a great history of the property and insights into the ecology of the lake.
A great week; hope to visit again soon! Thanks!
Andrew. . . thanks so much for taking the time to write a review, and also thanks for the kind words. Cheryl and I are so very happy that you and your family enjoyed yourselves and it was a pleasure having you! I knew you were from the West Coast, but I guess I did not realize that you were flying in just to stay at our place. What an honor you chose us! We do have an "unwritten" policy that makes an exception regarding bringing your own sheets and towels when folks fly in, rent a car, and then drive directly up from Detroit to our place. So, if there is a next time for you to be our guests (and I hope there is) please remind me and we will happily provide the sheets and towels.
We absolutely treasure this beautiful and unique lake and North Woods environment and nothing gives us more gratification then when our guests also realize what a special place it is. Thanks again for your visit and all the best to all of you.
