Extremely disappointed in this home
We use HomeAway and VRBO very frequently (over a dozen times in the last 1-2 years) and have never had to write a negative review of any property we've stayed in, until now. While the owner of this home was very accommodating and allowed us to bring our dog for the weekend, the house conditions were horrendous and I would never recommend staying there to anyone. I was incredibly embarrassed and disappointed to have rented this home for a trip with my elderly parents and felt awful that they had to stay here since we were in town for Derby weekend and no other place were available by the time we arrived.
-When we arrived, the refrigerator didn't work and there was a foul odor in the kitchen that we traced to moldy food in the fridge, as well as completely decomposed, liquified, rotten, lettuce in one of the drawers. There was also moldy food (an open and partially consumed can of soup) on the counter. The owners solution to the refrigerator problem was for us to use a refrigerator in the basement (see notes about the basement below) or to move a refrigerator upstairs on our own, which we did. She did not offer to contact a repair person.
-The house was not clean (dirty counters, dirty floors) and it was difficult to find basic items like trash bags and toilet paper.
-There was dog urine on the living room carpet that smelled terrible and plastic bags had been placed under the carpet in that area.
-The third bedroom was completely full of clothes, toys, furniture, etc and could not be used.
-The basement (which we didn't use, obviously, but we did have to go down there several times to move the refrigerator) was a disaster area (clothing and items covering the floor, no clear walk way) and a fire hazard.
Let me say that this is a very unfair review of my home. I have rented my house out during Derby for several years and never had a negative complaint. The refrigerator did stop working after I left that day. I tried to get repair people; since I have a home warranty, I had to work with that company. Needless to say, Derby weekend is a difficult time to get a repairman. I didn’t ask them to carry up the small fridge from the basement they did that on their own. In fact, I came back to the house directly upon receiving their phone call about it. I heard no complaints when I came back to the house regarding the condition, odors, etc.In fact, one of the elderly people complimented me on my nice home. The counters and floors had been professionally cleaned. The "moldy" can of soup is actually a grease can which I did neglect to throw away but produces no odor. The plastic under the carpet is to protect the hardwood floors (dogs had an accident several months ago--carpet was professionally cleaned).
I have had many people to my home since and no one has noticed any smells, odors, or any lack of cleanliness. My pictures are a clear depiction of my home, except for new items. My listing was specifically for a 2 bedroom and never with option to use my playroom as an additional room ( storage during rentals) . Toilet paper was left out (extra in stand in MB) and additional rolls could be found in the only linen closet. Trash bags were in top drawer in kitchen. Trash/ recycling had new bags. There is no odor in the kitchen or the house and their primary complaint when they contacted me seemed to be about oranges left in the fridge which produced no odor.
This rental was for 4 people. She then requested to have 6 people for 1 night and then asked me if she could bring her dog. I agreed to let the addtl. people stay for the 1 night and she agreed that she would pay extra for allowing the pet to stay. When I came back Thursday (their first day there) I found 6 adults already at my house (which expanded to 3 nights without my knowledge/ permission) and dog. I was accommodating on these requests when in reality most leasers would not. She never offered to pay extra for the pet as agreed.
The basement (laundry) did have clothes stacked in places(I had a death and hospitalization in the family before derby). Clothes are not fire hazards. The basement was not part of the rental agreement and only had to be accessed due to the unforeseen. I was a phone call away.
