April in Vieques
Although Vieques wasn't everything we had hoped for, Villa Tres Palmas was nice, very clean, and as described.
Vieques is very rural, which we had anticipated, but we hadn't anticipated some of the culture that accompanies rural areas. In a few instances, the capture and treatment of wild horses was sad to see.
We toured the best snorkeling spots (as suggested by the internet and 'Vieques Insider') across the island, but weren't overly impressed with the visability or corals. It was still fun, however - we saw turtles, rays, and plenty of fish. We also scored some decent surf, which was a big plus, since the island isn't known for surfing. The Bio Bay is absolutely amazing!
Regina was attentive and would've been available at the drop of a hat had we needed anything. The only minor downside of the property was the quantity of mosquitos in the house (even though we kept the house closed up the whole time).
Thank you for visiting Vieques and Tres Palmas. With rain comes mosquitoes. They aren’t exclusive to my home. If there were mosquitoes in my area, they were elsewhere. The house sits high on a hill and is blessed with Tradewinds most of the time. But rain and lack of breeze will bring mosquitoes, everywhere. We have screens on every window. It’s not a common complaint. As to the rural culture, I certainly understand that Vieques isn’t for everyone.
Perfect Vieques rental
We had an amazing time in Vieques-the property was lovely and comfortable, and Regina was so helpful with any and all questions we had, as well as great recommendations for places to eat/activities
Beautiful place, very clean, the owner was very helpful and a delight to deal with.
We enjoyed our stay in Vieques and our rental unit was amazing. I would rent that house over and over again and tell my friends about it as well. The owner was extremely helpful and very giving to us. I could not say one negative remark about our stay. Whoever rents her unit will always be completely satisfied I believe.
Villa Tres Palmas was a wonderful location for my family of 4 to spend a long weekend. The island of Vieques was exquisite and the best part of our Puerto Rican vacation. Regina and Tom, the home owners who stayed on the top floor of the home, couldn't have been nicer. Regina repeatedly went out of her way to make our stay as easy, pleasant, & fun as possible.
The home was lovely, spacious, & comfortable. While the only AC was in the bedrooms, the breezy perch at the top of a hill kept you from noticing. The beds were comfy, the bathrooms excellent, and the wi-fi good.
I would strongly recommend you rent a car on Vieques. We did not because there were none available during the holiday rush and were left to rely on publicos/taxis. You can't bring rental cars from the main island on the ferry. This hugely influenced our overall experience. While the publicos we did take were generally fine, they were very difficult to find or schedule which more than once left us and our young kids stranded. The fact that the house doesn't have a street address as the street is unnamed also made it difficult to arrange transportation. It is a relatively easy walk of about .5 mile to the ferry station where one could usually find a publico, unless a ferry had just arrived. However, we were never able to get a publico to come to the house to pick us up, and sometimes they were reluctant to drop us off so far from the main part of town.
I would also prepare yourself for a more rugged beach going experience than most Americans are accustomed to. These are some of the most gorgeous beaches I've ever seen hands down, but none of the 5 we visited had real bathrooms, running water of any kind, or a place to buy food or water.
I would also recommend if you can manage it to fly onto Vieques rather than take the ferry. We waited for nearly 6 hours (about 4 hours more than we had expected) for the boat missing a meal as there was no way to buy food while we waited. While our return trip on the ferry was actually quite lovely, the initial voyage to Vieques was through 12 ft swells and 40 mph gusts which led to one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. Both before and after our ferry run, they cancelled trips because of the unsafe conditions. Other than some intense seasickness, everything turned ok, but we were all very shaken by the trip. Despite the ferry trip there, it really was a wonderful vacation filled with wonderful people!
Thank you for choosing Tres Palmas. I’m not always on site, but I’m glad that I was available to assist your family in any way possible. I did explain the need for a vehicle on Vieques and also that rental cars cannot be brought onto the ferry. Vieques is known for it’s pristine beaches and off the beaten path experience. People visit because there aren’t concessions of any sort on the beaches. Sun Bay actually has bathrooms and a food concession that is sometimes open. Taxis have always been few, and there are fewer after Maria, as many vehicles were destroyed and/or drivers retired. Yes, most streets do not have names except in the immediate downtowns of Isabel and Esperanza. The taxi drivers are used to this, but there just aren’t enough taxis to transport everyone. As I explained, this is not a problem if you use Google Maps and type the property name in the search bar, if you have transportation.
The seas were very rough during Christmas week. Many voyages were cancelled. The voyages that were scheduled were deemed safe by the Coast Guard. I always recommend flying but it is an added expense for families and many people choose to take the ferry. Usually, it works out fine. But the winds were extreme and the crowds were huge that week.
I am glad that you enjoyed the house. Very few homes in Vieques, or anywhere in the Caribbean, have central air due to the high energy costs. Most homes have air conditioning in bedrooms only. You may find homes with a/c in the living room, but at a much higher price point to compensate for the giant electric bill. Our home sits so high, facing north, and it is very cool most of the year. Again, thank you for visiting Vieques and Tres Palmas.
Great communication. Everything was super clean. Very pleasant.
Had a lovely time with our kids. House was comfortable and in great order. Host was attentive and easy to reach.
Thank you. It was my pleasure.
Comfortable and convenient
I spent a lovely week at Regina and Tom's home, which was close to town, but offered a nice quiet retreat away from the touristy action. Although there are neighbors all around, the house and the pretty landscaping gave a lot of privacy. The neighborhood is very safe, and, despite traveling alone, I never felt uncomfortable about security. Regina is very responsive and gave me great tips for the area. I would not hesitate to stay here again.
