4th Year Repeaters looking for the 5th !

  • 4 de 5

What can I say? This was our 4th visit to La Thuile staying in this property and we are looking to return next ski season for our 5th visit. We are 2 ski loving couples in their 40’. I do find it very disappointing that Philip M should submit an unfair & unjust review. Yes … ok if you are looking for the most absolute luxury then this is not for you however we find this property to be absolutely as described fairly by the owners with a fair price tag to match. Since our first visit in Jan 2011, the owners have made a number of improvements & refurbishments. As we like to eat in a few times during the week the kitchen/dining area is important to us. The Kitchen is well equipped & fully functional & there is a good range of pots & pans, crockery, utensils etc. The mugs are of a decent size for a good cuppa in the mornings & there are a range of glasss for your choice of evening tipple! In fact the owner provided some decent wine glasses in our 2nd year as a result of feedback from us in year 1. Can’t say fairer than that! The dining table is a good size for the 4 of us & the new padded smart dining chairs are comfortable. There is a new flat screen TV for those who want that & the sofa seating is comfortable. The bedrooms are sufficient for 2 couples, the beds are comfortable & plenty of hangers & wardrobe space. The bathroom is newly refurbed as per the pictures. The shower is powerful which for 2 ladies with long hair is a god send ! There is also the benefit of a small bath tub which is welcomed for soaking tired ski legs. Yes, it’s not a full size bath but hey … most places you only get a shower cubicle! The toilet is separate which works well with 4 sharing. Overall the location is excellent for 4 skiers, close to the ski lifts. As we also like to dine out, we find the location also excellent to stroll to the village to bars & restaurants. We have found the owner Lorraine to be most helpful pre & post visit & always accommodating regarding our arrival & departure times. Like I said, we are looking to go back for a 5th year!

Réponse du propriétaire: Thank you for this glowing endorsement - the mere fact you are looking to return for a 5th stay says it all, not only about the apartment/my management style but also the resort, with so many km of pistes to choose from, and the added fun of skiing over the border into France for a change of scenery/snow conditions (being the other side of the mountain) and food. We are also delighted to have you back, as you know your way around the flat and the village perfectly, and I can be confident you will leave the apartment as clean as you find it every time, and will let me know if there is anything requiring attention....thank you for mentioning the special wine glasses - a recent guest broke one but didn't mention it - I now have it on my 'to do' list to make sure we have 4 identical wine glasses available for you, as we Italians/elective Italians tend to drink wine out of tumblers! Look forward to your reservation (you discerning people also normally favour January for the uncrowded pistes and the most attractive prices!)

Very dated accommodation needs major update

  • 2 de 5

We just returned from 1 weeks skiing in la Thuile. We have been renting accommodation for the last 15 yrs so feel we have some experience on this matter. La Thuile is a great ski resort but we were very disappointed by the low standard of the accommodation..the apartment was very small and the 2 bedrooms were very cramped. The beds were very uncomfortable with very hard mattresses on a metal bed. The lounge had very old and dated sofas , with things like fluorescent lighting in the sitting area. The kitchen was well equipped and convenient to use. The bathroom was new but had a very small bath.Sound proofing was a real problem in this concrete block of flats. We could hear every noise from the next door apartments, My advice is to look elsewhere for a higher standard of accommodation until the owner does a major upgrade.

Réponse du propriétaire: This is the "revenge" review promised in the parting words of renters who were very happy with everything until I witheld a very modest amount from their cleaning/damage deposit as I found the bathroom sink full of toothpaste remains, mirrors streaked, floor full of dust and fluff; in the kitchen the hob covered in oil from a morning fry-up, and the mugs all left with tea stains. (I later found much more extra cleaning required, point being this is a malicious and untrue “revenge review”) To address some of the points, which other reviewers also give the lie to: 1. The dimensions of the apartment are described and photographed without any photoshopping or fish-eye lenses. The bath is described as being of the shorter type; perhaps the unusual feature of having a tub at all, in addition to a powerful shower, usually the only option in Italian flats, was overlooked by reviewer. 2. The beds are not metal. The main bedroom has wooden frame, head and foot and flexible wooden slats under the spring mattress, the second bedroom has two solid wood beds with no metal parts, again with flexible slats under new and comfortable mattresses. 3. The apartment has plenty of energy-saving or LED lights in the entrance, kitchen, dining area, bedside tables and bathrooms. Bedrooms and living room also have the original fluorescent lighting strips over the windows, but they are additional to many other sources. 4. We pride ourselves on the standard of updating, furnishing and cleanliness of the accommodation. Photographs on the site show our new kitchen, new bathroom, new furniture in one bedroom, lounge where low cushions have been replaced by real mattresses for extra sleeping space or comfortable sitting. This season, we replaced the TV with a 32" flat-screen, and the dining room chairs with larger and more comfortable ones (updated photos will be forthcoming) 5. Noise is a non-issue with us. As in all flats, immediate neighbours may be heard but the flats are all owner-occupied, so only used at weekends, Christmas and major holidays: Mon-Fri guests are almost alone, yet so near the ski lifts; whereas the Planibel complex by the lifts is occupied by frequently rowdy holidaymakers and noise can be a problem at all times I trust our other reviews by independent visitors (some have returned up to 4 years running!) show how most people feel after staying with us. One 'poison' review makes the others shine all the brighter!

Location ideale per sciatori e famiglie

  • 5 de 5

No queues in La Thuile!

  • 4 de 5

We flew to Milan, a fairly easy and stress-free 2 1/2 hour drive - mostly dual carriageway. Upon our arrival in La Thuile, the apartments were simple to find with a huge sign on the roof, and parking right outside.

An ideal apartment for 4 people, it was very cosy and with a constant supply of hot water. Lovely views and particularly good cooking facilities. The decor is rather 70s, but putting scrabble tiles on the tablecloth squares was particularly satisfying ! The bathroom is apparently about to be updated, this will be much appreciated as the current bath with a step halfway took us by surprise on a number of occasions!

A couple of suggestions for improvements : it took ages to brew a decent quantity of coffee for us all at breakfast using the little pots provided,a large caffetiere(or similar) would be really useful. We also found the double bed really hard,a comfy mattress and some softer pillows would make a huge difference. However, these are small niggles and we had a great holiday.

The skiing was excellent - varied and interesting. We had about a foot of snow on night two and day three, which was an unexpected bonus, and made for some fabulous skiing the following days ! We tended to ski La Rosiere in the mornings and La Thuile in the afternoons. There are plenty of every grade of run, from easy blues, through easy and harder reds, right up to one or two very challenging blacks. The return to town is fairly hard, especially in slushy end of day snow, and beginners may be well advised to get back down on the gondola. I think that the longest we queued for any lift all week was about 45 seconds, and we were frequently the only people on some runs ! Ski rental is good from Berthod Sport, and if you rent from them, you get free use of the locker facilitles at the gondola station, saving you carrying them up there every morning ! The weather and visibility can change incredibly quickly up top, so always take too many clothes, and a piste map !

As it was pretty much the end of the skiing season quite a few restaurants had already closed, but we had many excellent meals, in particular at the Coppapan(just beyond the gondola station) and Pepita Caffe, perched above the BP garage ! Bars were a bit limited, but the gin and tonics were always on the generous side.

All in all a very relaxing, peaceful holiday, thanks to Lorraine for her very efficient service and a property in an excellent location

Réponse du propriétaire: Glad to hear you all had a good time, and once again, proof that skiing in La Thuile is good even in April - either you get some late fresh snow or you have brilliant sunshine on longer, warmer days than earlier in the season - or if you are lucky, you get plenty of both! Yes, I confirm the bathroom will be updated this summer, though we will probably retain the 'half-bath' feature: nearly all adults shower rather than bath, and families with small children find sitting them on the higher 'step' is easier on the parents' backs and makes for less screaming if children are not mad about water! Thanks for your comments on the restaurants. As we tend to cook at home most of the time, it is good to get plenty of updates as standards change over time. Will definitely try Pepita next time, as well as Coppapan, which we already frequent on occasion. We do appreciate your other suggestions, though I think several of them may be generated by different living-cooking habits between Brits and Italians. You had said you would have appreciated an electric kettle rather than one to put on the hob, and we may add this for next season, but concerning the coffee, the assortment of Italian Moka machines make 3 or 6 coffees EACH.... I know we Brits all drink mugs rather than shots, so the form is: make a Moka for 3 or 6, share between mugs and then add hot water or hot milk (or water-then-milk) according to your preferences, to fill the mug. If you pour yourselves mugs of coffee from the Moka, you may be very jittery on the pistes and at night too!! Concerning the bedding, again individual preferences count for so much. We replaced the old double bed with new 'orthopaedic' wooden struts and new mattresses just 2 years ago and find them great (my husband has issues with soft mattresses which 'give' in strange places), and there are about 10 pillows so Italians use 1 each and Brits can use 2 each as per custom, each choosing between the hard-ish and the soft. On the other hand, the mattresses in the bunk bedroom will be changed this summer, and perhaps even all the furniture in that bedroom (we are wondering whether people would prefer a double divan bed to bunks, or whether those with children prefer two very separate beds......). Glad you really enjoyed your skiing and you said the resort was every bit as good as Cervinia, which you already knew. Hope to see you again!

Becoming a little dated-but suitable.

  • 4 de 5

THE APARTMENT

The apartment was ok, if becoming a little dated, the recently refurbished kitchen being the exeption and much appreciated. Perfectly adequate and comfortable, I would say ideal for 4 persons but 6 would be feasable using the lounge sofa beds. There were just the 2 of us father and Son 54 and 30yrs so we had plenty of space. We cooked every night exept our last and did cooked breakfasts each morning, kitchen pots and pans sufficient but perhaps some due for replacement.

We found the apartment to be generally clean, sadly though previous occupants had left a number of areas below the standard I would expect. It took the edge off our exitement at the beggining of the holiday to have to clean out the bathroom and the oven and much of the cutlery, but being ex military got on with it, once done no further cleanliness issues, this is a rare occurance we were told.

The heating was excellent, often sleeping with the windows open (and -17degrees outside), hot water always available.

The location is superb for skiing, we found that you could walk a short way up the road and join the piste to ski down to the Gondola, at the end of the day you could almost ski up to the block.

During our stay the other apartments in the block were almost all empty for most of the week so it was very quiet.

THE RESORT

We found La Thuile to be as we had researched, a quiet resort with limited nightlife but with adequate facilities.

There are shops available for self catering, within the planibel there is a supermarket slightly higher prices than the norm but not expensive by resort standards, there is also a butcher in the same complex along with other shops and a takeaway.

In the village about 10-15 mins walk are further shops and a pharmacy, and also a number of cafes and restraunts.

Being at the head of a valley it remains quiet and there is little to do at night, this was however our main reason to stay here so no suprise.

THE SKI AREA

The ski area was excellent, superb snow(though this was the best year for snow in the alps for over 25 years).

Piste maintenance was excellent also and the quantity and variety of pistes is very good. Many off the reds however are not red steepness, except in a few short pitches, many pistes being at the easy end of the grading. The exception to this being the blacks down the front back to the village (serious steepness in places).

The trip to France over the pass is fun.

We will no doubt be returning in the future.

Réponse du propriétaire: I am glad you had a good time and yes, the snow was excellent this year, but so it has been in La Thuile every single year for the past 10 years at least - I would say this year we were short on the abundant late snow (early April) that we have got used to - but in any case, people have had fabulous sunshine nearly every week, are still finding good snow on the higher runs and can ski all the way down if they don't mind it being soft at the very bottom. And today as I write (April 11) it is snowing hard, so skiing until closure on April 25 will be good again! Concerning the apartment, we are proud of the standards we keep, as it is our own ski holiday apartment too, and we renovate constantly but gradually: kitchen, new, proper mattresses on the downstairs sofas, and new soft coverings all within the last couple of years. This summer we will replace mattresses on the bunk bed and hope to fully renovate the bathroom, do repainting as always.... so 2012-13 visitors will have an even better experience. Concerning kitchen equipment, there is a huge selection of large and medium pasta/vegetable pots, a series of new frying pans of all sizes, a pressure cooker, a large selection of cake and baking tins, 3 or 4 coffee makers, sufficient crockery for 10-12 people, lots of microwave dishes etc etc so yes, some pans are newer than others, but there can be no other place with such a great selection - a stark contrast to Planibel rental apartments with exactly 4 sets of crockery/cutlery, 2 or 3 saucepans and only 2 cooking rings..... Finally, I am extremely surprised you had even the slightest reserve on the level of cleanliness - we take a deposit from visitors which is refunded on departure after inspection. I may this once not have checked all the cutlery, (and the oven is one of the places I always check too!) but all rooms are checked thoroughly and where necessary cleaned again by me personally, windows polished etc. I also keep notes for future reference on individual occupants and for those preceding you I actually recorded 'nice people, left v.clean, want to come again'.... You are welcome to come and check out our annual enhancements at the start of next season and see how you like it! Thanks for your comments anyway, they show people do care and our efforts will be noticed.

"Team Clique" Ski Trip 2012

  • 4 de 5

Well what a great little resort with a great ski area! The apartment is in a fab location just a few minutes ski or herringbone from the chairlifts or 1 min further walk to the gondola. Apartment facilities are good & kitchen facilities excellent. We are 2 couples in our 40's who like to chill out & part self cater & part dine out & we found all we needed in the apartment & in the village. The apartment was cosy & warm & clean & tidy with a balcony. The old village is pretty & we found a couple of nice friendly bars & restaurants. The mountain restaurants are also of a good standard with very reasonable prices. If apres ski nightlife is your priority (crowded pistes & lift queues that go with it!!!) this is NOT for you!!! For us it's all about great skiing, good food & wine & friendly people........& it's perfect!!!! We have already discussed booking again next year...... so thanks Lorraine.... see you in 2013!!

Réponse du propriétaire: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay with us - you were happy with the abundant snow, and in January I know some days were really quiet on the pistes, so you felt you had them almost to yourselves! That said, with over 130 km of pistes to choose from, even at New Year or February Carnival, you won't find yourself queueing, nor pistes crowded, unless you choose to relentlessly repeat blacks 2 & 3 down into the village - we advise staying up and enjoying the sunshine of the pistes at higher altitudes! I look forward to seeing you again next year - I think you said you will go for January again? Just check the availability chart!
