We decided to vacation in Hilo to celebrate my husband’s big 5-0. I found this place after searching months for a place to accommodate 17 people (10 adults and 7 children). My main concern was finding a house that had enough bathrooms for this many people—especially six teens. Imagine my elation finding the Sugar Mill Plantation. It has eight bedrooms and each has its own bathroom; six of the rooms even have their own lanais. The video of this house (and the surrounding property) does not do it justice; it is absolutely beautiful, and it met all our expectations. With six teens and one 8-year old, we needed a lot of space, and that’s exactly what we got. One of the highlights (among many) is that this house boasts a movie room with stadium-like seating. Although it was not yet finished at the time of our rental (no video equipment), the kids made great use of it on days that it was raining by setting up mock concerts and just hanging out. When it was sunny, the front yard was huge enough for us to set up a volleyball net for the whole gang to engage in a friendly volleyball “tournament”. There was also a farm on the property which was a nice surprise. We met the farmer one day and he kindly gave us fresh, beautiful, organic vegetables and fruits for free! We couldn’t believe our luck. We had a farm-to-table dinner that night, and the veggies were wonderful; we had the papayas and avocados the following day for breakfast. Steve Cox, the property manager, was informative about the area and the house. He was also attentive to our needs and responded to all our texts; he even came to help us during his weekend when we accidentally locked ourselves out of the house. I highly recommend this place even for smaller groups or couples. It is rentable by the size of your group so if you don’t need all eight bedrooms, you can rent the rooms to accommodate the size of your party. I loved the fact that the house was so close to town, farmer's market, the botanical gardens, the beach, Rainbow Falls, and so much more. We had an incredible week here. Needless to say, my husband had an amazing 50th. We give Sugar Mill Plantation 5 out of 5 stars!!

Couldn't have been better

So many good things to say - I'll start with the house itself. It's beautiful, nicely setup with each good-sized bedroom having it's own bathroom & patio/balcony, and each of the bed/bath combos situated privately, so noise from kids, babies, & couples is contained to their own areas. The kitchen/dining rooms are large enough for our whole group of 17 people to cook, eat, and play board games. There are a couple additional sitting areas inside the house for smaller groups to play video games or just hang out on the couches. We used the whole house during our week there.

The outside is equally impressive. The front and back porches were gathering places for hide and seek games after dark, morning coffee, or just enjoying the weather. But the grounds are where we were blown away. Not sure exactly how big the plantation is, but our group explored every day and came back with something new to talk about; lots of fruit growing, some critters spotted, and other nature tidbits.

The area itself was exactly what we wanted - not overrun with tourists! Shopping in Hilo was inexpensive, there were plenty of Hawaiian-only shops but also places like Target & Safeway. The local convenience market was only a couple blocks away, and they had the Spam wasubi that the guys loved. Lots of greenery and waterfalls, old lava flows, shoreline, and very friendly people.

It couldn't have been better.

A wonderful home for large or small groups

We rented this home for a family reunion - a few people from the mainland getting together with Hawaii-based family. The home was perfect for our reunion. It's located on a large lot with no homes nearby and very little traffic on the nearby road. There are fruit trees on site and a working farm nearby whose owner has offered to provide fresh vegetables to tenants (for an honorary charge and a thank you to the farmer). The sound of the waterfall was wonderful and we all enjoyed hiking around the property where we picked fresh apple bananas and one or two mangoes. We only needed 4 of the bedrooms and were given our choice of which 4 we wanted to use. The rooms are large and most have lots of windows. Some have private balconies. All have private baths. There is air conditioning in the main living area and some bedrooms but some of the units in the bedrooms didn't work. The owner has tried to fix them but with little success. However, we visited in Late June/early July and were reasonably comfortable sleeping with the windows open and overhead or floor fans. Steve Cox, the property manager, helped us choose rooms that were the coolest based on location, # of windows, etc. He was very helpful and easy to communicate with both before and during our stay. The kitchen is phenomenal. We've never rented a house with so many utensils and great appliances. There are 2 gathering rooms, both with TV's and comfortable seating. A large covered front lanai was our favorite spot in the morning and evening.

Amazing property, views, and value

For just around $100/night per bedroom, you have the opportunity to stay on a 20 acre slice of heaven. That basically sums up my review. The property is amazing and sets the perfect scene for enjoying the slower pace of the big island. The house is - of course - huge and space was no issue at all. The kitchen was spacious and appliances were great. The views out onto the property and of the ocean in the distance made getting up each morning a pleasure. We enjoyed coffee and meals out on the large covered lanai / front porch. The bedrooms themselves were also very spacious, and each had its own bathroom which was really nice. The showers in the non-master bedroom were quite small but did the job. As a previous review states, the home does not claim A/C yet we found I believe 4 working ACs and with the doors open around the house it was enough to cool things off. Most of the time I don't imagine they would be needed if you can get a nice breeze to roll through the home.

Addressing previous reviews, do not expect full luxury. You are located on 20 acres of nature, and some of that nature may find its way in and around the home. We're not talking any kind of infestation, but there were some bugs and a gecko or two in the home. This was not a big deal to us. Some ceiling fan lights did not work so we just used the nightstand lights instead.

With the right expectations, you will be delighted with this home. Our group agreed that the home and the property were amazing.

Part A:

1. Setting was gorgeous, but ocean view was barely visible as a slice of the horizon. No whale sighting etc. No view at all from the veranda

2. Grounds were excellently maintained

3. Manager Steve Cox, was professional, friendly, always available and helpful

4. Plantation house was spacious and airy and absolutely devoid of roaches

5. Kitchen equipment was well functioning. Gas stove was large and able to meet large group needs

6. TVs were operational

Part B: Unfavorable

7. Definitely not ocean view as advertised

8. House cleanliness was marginal. When shoes were removed, foot soles became black

9. All window ledges were dirty with dust, dirt, and insect residue

10. Significant dust balls behind and under bedroom furniture

11. Some room air conditioners were inoperative

12. Some bedroom fans were inoperative

13. Some ceiling lights were inoperative including one bedroom

14. Many window blinds were not fully functional, could not be adjusted etc.

15. Lamps were not available at bed stands. Most lamps were under wattage for reading.

16. Pole lamps are needed in the common areas for reading

17. Insufficient bath mats for all bathrooms

18. Bath linen was mismatched in towel sizes etc.

19. Kitchen pots and pans looked like they were assembled from different garage sales

20. Dishes were mismatched collection of types sizes and styles. Soup bowls an odd collection

21. Glassware a total mess, lacked sufficient types (juice glasses, water glasses, wine glasses, drink glasses etc.

22. Kitchen ware storage was totally inadequate to support the needs of advertised number of possible guests, even the group of 11 that we brought.

23. For the type of visit and the cost, visitors should be supplied with a bare minimum of kitchen supplies, mustard, catsup, vinegar, sugar, flour, salt, pepper. To buy these for a short 10 day stay is disconcerting and unnecessarily costly. Availability of these items should be standard and advertised as such.

Overall:

For the fee which we paid, we found the appointments to be marginal for reasons 7 - 23. The kitchen stuff looked to be a broad collection of garage sale pickups. The poor maintenance of air conditioning and lighting shows a lack of desire on the owner's part to give reasonable care for the cost that people pay. It was passable for us, but it would be a disaster for foreign client occupancy.

We did enjoy our stay ..

With such a large home, it is virtually impossible to prevent circumstances such as ceiling lights being out and fans malfunctioning. When we see these things or are made aware we do our best to remedy the problems as soon as possible. Regarding the Air Conditioners, we do not advertise the we have AC due to the fact that we have had nothing but problems with this particular manufacturer and there are no guarantees that more problems will not occur. Few homes on the Hamakau Coast have AC as it is typically to needed by most. We hope to have you and your family as guests of the Sugar Mill home again in the future and will do our best to make your stay more pleasurable. Mahalo

Uniquely beautiful, a big lot, excellent ocean view and mountain view.

This is a very unique vacation rental place. We had a great family reunion Here. It's very relaxing with plenty of space for everyone. Early morning is a good time to watch sun rise in the ocean and Mouna Kea turning to red color. The slow pace of life and the Internet speed would you forget about work. We will definitely come again in the future.

Pittoresque Waipio Rim Valley est un court trajet de 45 minutes jusqu'à la côte Hamakua pittoresque.

Akaka Falls Park État avec son imposante 422 chute d'eau est à seulement 15 minutes.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offre une grande randonnée et le tourisme. Il est à environ une heure et offre une journée ou plus de trajets complète.

Nani Mau Gardens est sur le bord de Hilo et offre 22 acres de beaux jardins pour les visites touristiques.

Waimea, la ville de Cowboy Hawaiian, est un must lors de votre séjour. Il est une heure de route et se trouve à 2700 pieds où le climat est un peu plus frais. Regarder un rodéo ici pour le grand amusement de famille.

La maison elle-même se trouve sur le bord de la pittoresque ville balnéaire Pepeekeo. Être à seulement 15 minutes de Hilo, il offre à ses clients la possibilité de se détendre dans un environnement calme, maison de détente près de l'océan tout en restant proche de boutiques, restaurants et sites touristiques.
