I never usually write reviews, because, mostly, my experience agrees with the majority. But, in this case, I feel like I must say something. We really had high hopes after viewing the pictures and reading the comments, but within moments of arriving, we were quite underwhelmed. In general, the place is way more run down that it looks in the pictures. Specifically, here are the items we discovered (in no particular order) over the duration of our stay:
- Grass was not mowed (and due to the next reason, we had to stay off the lawn)
- We found two ticks on our 5 year old in the first 3 hours of being there. One (a deer tick) was attached.
- There were dirty dishes sitting in the dishwasher (and broken glass on the bottom of the dishwasher).
- The downstairs toilet was broken (constantly running, so we shut it off). We asked for it to be fixed and the maintenance guy never showed in the 3 days we were there. My poor mother-in-law had to go upstairs every time she needed to use the bathroom (she just had knee surgery).
- There were bits of food stuck on the kids room blankets
- Urine stains on the trundle bed under the bunk bed. And we noticed one stain on the master bed mattress too.
- There were crushed nuts (peanuts?) scattered all over the screen porch floor.
- Cabinet doors under the island were falling apart.
- The fireplace had half burnt logs sitting in it that made the living room smell
- Lots of dust and pet hair in the master bedroom (on blankets and between mattress and headboard)
- There was a pacifier sitting on the coffee table in the dining room (!)
- The internet was very slow and choppy (I think there is something wrong with the router)
- A door handle just fell off when we tried to use it.
- There were cigarette butts outside (this is supposed to be a no smoking property).
- [Unrelated to the house, but related to the experience] I booked this place on VRBO and was charged a 10% service fee. If I had booked directly through the property management company (Evolve), I would have avoided that fee entirely!!!!
These are the facts. Some are minor, but when all taken together, it definitely made us feel unhappy about our stay. We sent the tick in for testing. So far, our daughter is fine, but if she ends up with Lyme disease, well, that would just be the icing on the cake.
I do hope these items get addressed, because the place has the potential to be nice. But, unfortunately, it is too late for one potential return customer.

Had perfect amenities for our family, including young children
We stayed at the Smiling Dog Meadows in October 2017. The home had everything we needed, and more, especially with two young children (ages 3 and 1.5). The house was laid out well and the kid's room worked especially well being connected to the master bedroom. There were toys for our children, a high chair, and plenty of sleeping space. I loved the screened in porch. It rained while we were there so having a place to still get some fresh air was nice.
The lake access was across the road, which was perfect for us since I didn't want our young children (who don't know how to swim) wandering by themselves. The weather wasn't warm enough for swimming but we did have some fun down at the dock.
A couple of details that worked well for us: We brought our Amazon fire stick since we weren't sure how many cable channels we'd get. We have one son who wakes up quite early so having TV was important to us since it was dark each morning he woke up. Also, Monterey, MA is pretty remote and it took about 25 minutes to drive anywhere.
Some events we enjoyed while there: Harvest Festival in Stockbridge, walking around Great Barrington (there are three toy stores!), pizza and BBQ in Sheffield (Bash Bish Brew and Que), fire truck show at the Butternut ski area, and Les Trois Emme winery in New Marlborough (stumbled upon this on one of our drives).
I'm sure I would have given this home a 5-star rating had we been able to enjoy the lake, yard and other outdoor amenities more. We definitely hope to be back one day!
A Labor Day to Remember - And A Great Way to End the Summer
As you already know from the note we sent you, please sign us up for next Summer. We had an amazing visit. This was our eighth labor day visit to the Berkshires. Each year we travel around renting a new place, but this is it - we have found our Labor Day destination point. In fact, my husband and I would like to rent the place just for ourselves this Fall. Here is the biggest thank you - It is actually not the beautiful private dock view of Lake Garfield; it is actually not the image I have our kids racing thru the many paths of the on the property and picking blackberries; it is not the great old house; or how close the property is to just about everything in the Berkshires; and it is not the thorough welcome book that you provided us with so many great Berkshire vacation and activity tips. All of those things were great and yes, thank you! But the biggest thank you, what we really liked the most, were all the items you made available to us. At the last place we stayed, we had to rent our own boats. You not only had all these great boats, but you had a barn full of children activities and toys; you had just about every board game on earth is in the house; an amazing DVD collection; an ice cream maker; a gourmet blender; even a cuisinart! It takes a great deal of trust to leave so much for your renters. You could have easily just rented us a house, but you actually rented us a home. Thank you! By the way, I agree with your last commenter. Your property's sign-in book is beautiful, the stories and shared experiences that your renters voice through the years is amazing. Completely, agree with that person you should get those comments posted.
Let me begin on staying how kind the owners are. They seem to have team all working for the property. The owners make themselves available remotely, but they also have a caretaker who can be reach any time, a team that takes care of the grounds. At one point, the ladder on one of their floating docks came undone and within hours their dock specialist came to fix it. I felt like I was staying at a fancy hotel, all for a reasonible price.
What was most amazing was the facilities. Everything you can think of is in the house - everything from boats to every board game to a huge collection of DVDs.
What we loved most, and this might be silly, is the book you receive from the owners. It has a list of all their fav restaurants, explanations on where to find everything in the house, maps of the property and the area. All of this comes in real handy.
I will let you determine how beautiful the place is by the pictures, but will say we were so grateful we did this.
To the owners - Maybe you will remember me, we spoke on the phone last week where I thanked you on a great visit. We stayed on the property in early June. You should really think about taking the comment book you have at the house and transferring those comments on this page. When we all stayed at the house, my family really enjoyed reading the years of personal and beautiful comments from everyone. It felt like I was in a time machine. It was helpful to read all the great ideas on how people used the property, what they enjoyed most, what they will most remember, and hearing the series of charming stories. All the comments would be interesting for others to read and of course the positive notes would help you rent the home as well. We are still talking about our stay and miss the home so much that I had to back to the site and look at the photos. Then I got the idea and wanted to share.
