Can't be beat
This cottage is a gem. I have rented summer cottages in various coastal location Maine for 25 years. 6 years ago I discovered this place and stopped searching for the perfect Maine cottage. the cottage is modest but comfortable and has everything you need. Everything about it is a superlative, the location is spectacular, the grounds and gardens are a delight, the area unsurpassed. The proximity to The Holbrook Reserve is a great feature. If you want the authentic Mane experience unspoiled by tourism you won't find abetter place or a better deal.
Excellent location close to great day trips to charming Maine towns.
Lovely views of entire Penobscot Bay from the cottage deck and grounds. Perfect for out of the way quiet evenings, yet close to less-busy small towns for day trips. We loved Stonington, Blue Hill and Castine. Cottage is also 1.5 miles from Helen and Scott Nearing’s Good Life Center, located at the farm they established and open to visitors weekday afternoons. Resident docents provide thoughtful tours and insight into the Nearing life at their off the grid farm. Truly worth a visit.
Each year we come up to Maine and stay a little farther north each time... this time I think we truly found our home away from home! There is something very special about the area and communities that make up Penobscot bay. We found the location of the cottage to be exactly what we were looking for - away from it all but still a great base to adventure and explore, some of which included Kayak tours in Castine, hikes and beach going in Holbrook Sanctuary & Deer Isle, the most amazing true organic farm (Four Season Farm) down the road open on Saturday, Strong Brewing Co. in Sedgwick, Brooklin, Blue Hill & Bar Harbor to name a few. It's only 1.5 hours to Acadia for day trips so we could tick the box on climbing a few summits. It is at minimum a 25-30 minute (beautiful) drive to the nearest town with gas and groceries, which again I was fine with but worth a mention.
The cottage is clean and provides everything you might need for meal prep. The views, garden, and property overall were just perfect. We were treated to several amazing sunsets by the fire on the water. Thank you Don and family for sharing your cottage with us so we could experience the real Maine!
Great Maine Escape
I rarely write reviews for these sites, but then I rarely stay at a place quite like East Wind Cottage. The cottage is nice and has everything you need for a vacation. The views out the back of lobster boats on their morning commute and schooners floating by can't be beaten. Every morning my wife would cut fresh lupine and Black-eyed Susans from the field across the street. Then we'd cross the street to watch dolphins breach. We turned our dog loose in the field across the street every morning to chase finches and turns. The setting is spectacular. The owner, Don, had everything ready for us when we got there. He gave us access to his garden so we had fresh salads and vegetables nightly with our lobster. Thanks, Don. You will love East Wind Cottage.
So glad your stay met your expectations. My little peace of heaven on earth has made memories for many. Thank you for your response and greatly appreciate you sharing with others. Hopefully others will have the opportunity to experience my cottage and the surroundings. May you want to return please feel welcome. Thank you.
Cozy cottage in a spectacular setting
For 20+ years our family roamed the Maine coast looking for that perfect cottage. We knew we found it 6 years ago in East Wind Cottage on Cape Rosier . The cottage is comfortable and cozy, offering all the amenities you need for a terrific summer holiday.
Three things really make this place stand out above all the others. It is situated on an an elevated hillside with a spectacular west facing view providing the breathtaking experience of watching the ever changing 180 degree panorama of Penobscot Bay from the wraparound porch. In the morning, its breakfast on the deck watching the lobster men at work as the bald eagles head up the coast. In the evenings its sunset cocktails and BBQ's enjoying the common but never failing to thrill sightings of the great 3 masted schooners that regularly ply this famous sailing ground.
Second is the landscaping. The hill on which it sits features beautiful gardens while sloping gently down to the classic rocky, Maine coast where the more adventurous can swim off the rocks and a large fire pit where we regularly enjoyed bonfires and marshmallow roasting as the sun disappeared across the bay. In addition is the unusual and very special feature of access to the wider surrounding private properties including grassy paths through the fields and the long, crescent beach adjacent to the cottage.
Third is all the wonderful amenities and character of the immediate vicinity. It is situated next to the Holbrook Island Sanctuary, a publicly owned nature preserve occupying 1,345 acres. The site includes upland forest and meadows, wetland marshes and ponds, and rocky mainland shores in addition to off-shore Holbrook Island so from the cottage it is but a 10 minute walk to some of the loviest hiking trails in Maine. Of particular appeal to us is the unsurpassed kayaking waters. You are truly in kayak heaven. However for us what we loved as much as anything was after years of experiencing Maine places we had loved being ruined by overdevelopment and tourism we found an area that was Maine the way we remembered it. The Blue Hill Peninsula is remarkably unchanged from the way it looked and
felt in Robert McCloskey's famous children books, One Morning in Maine and Blueberries for Sal, that we read as children. You likely wont run into a bear awhile picking blueberries anymore but you can still fill you buckets up in no time at the blueberry fields everywhere, kerplink, kerplank, kerplunk.
