Pretty basic which is what I expected. Great location for us
Property managers were great. Even though they were closed when we arrived, they still met us at water taxi to show us to the property
Not for everyone, but wonderful for some
I've stayed here twice, and it's my go-to 2nd choice for accommodations. Here are the pros and cons
Super close to ferry and main strip. Amazing sunrises
Working air conditioning. Usually I don't use it, but every day by 8 the sun was streaming in the house baking it, so unless we were out, we used it midmorning. We never needed it in the evening or afternoon. Ceiling fans circulated air great.
Huge comfortable bed.
Great kitchen. Appliances were good, especially the stove. If you like to cook, you are set.
It comes with a coffee maker and filters as well, and water which is important on the island (don't drink the tap water.) You also get dish soap and a washcloth for dishes.
The pans and knives are what you expect from a rental, not great, but fine. Plates and silverware are quite nice.
It would be better if there were paper towels and a scrubby for the pans. If you get in too late to shop, be sure to bring any necessities.
Decent wifi - we were even able to stream movies sometimes. Cable TV (we didn't really use it, but you might?)
The shower has hot water (never a guarantee on the island!) and worked well. No soap or shampoo is provided: bring your own. There are a plethora of towels, which I appreciate.
Most importantly, the apartment is spotlessly clean. No dirt, no bugs, not even a gecko. Its a bit worn by time (broken wall socket, rusty faucet) but so so clean.
I'd happily suggest it to my parents to stay in, as it's comfortable if simple.
Unpleasant to swim outside house (too many boat, mucky water.) You'll want to walk to the split (long walk) or ferry over to the new koko king on the north side (short walk to free ferry)
No hammock, despite there being hooks (and being in the photos).
I brought my own. You can buy one cheaply from one of the native sellers on the main street.
The photos hide this, but no view north; there is a hostel literally sharing a wall with the apartment. The hostel is freakishly quiet and I have never been disturbed by them, but it doesn't feel very private.
Downstairs is another story- there is a long term rental. This means you get to see underwear drying, food cooking smells, kids running in and out, people laughing and shouting, but it's quiet after 9. Once, the most obscene music I've ever heard was playing downstairs at top volume, but a call to manager stopped it.
It depends what you want. If you want simple, down to earth, clean and functional this is the spot.
We really enjoyed the room and the view...I could lay and watch the reef all day! Central to everything, nice quite area. Easy walking to anything!
Thanks for choosing Diane's Beach House and the wonderful review. We appreciate it!
So glad you had a relaxing time, soaking up the Caribbean sea breeze and enjoying the view of Belize's Barrier Reef.
We look forward to hosting you again at our beach front vacation rental in Caye Caulker.
Convenient, comfortable and clean
The property was fairly priced and only a one minute walk from the water taxi dock. A few more minutes to various bars and restaurants. Caye Caulker is pretty laid back and relaxing compared to Ambergris Caye. Had a fun catamaran snorkeling trip with Carlos tours, but other than that, there's not much to do. So we read a lot. Very few swimming beaches. Re snorkeling, very few fish but it was fun to swim with nurse sharks. Rented bikes for two hours, which was plenty long enough to see the whole island.
Pros and Cons...
Nice and Roomy
Convenient Location, especially from water taxi
TV with movie channels
A/C in bedroom drowns out exterior noise
Sand Beach in front, but not for swimming
Ocean View, sunrises
Water Cooler with 5 gallons of water
Noisy Area, including occasional barking from adjacent properties
No Hammocks (as shown in pictures)
18 step stairs to entry, especially with luggage.
Limited Furniture, Lighting and Decor
Ants on kitchen counters
Minimally Equipped kitchen- no spices, paper towels, S&P, etc.
Permanent Family resides downstairs rendering that area off limits... Not obvious from pictures.
Thanks for choosing us. Caye Caulker offers an authentic, unregulated island village experience. The country of Belize has less than a dozen 'tall' buildings over 4 stories high with elevators: banks, office buildings and maybe 2 hotels. If you are not staying or working in one of them, you are going to be hauling your luggage up stairs. Pack efficiently. DBH offers guests: a king size bed w/memory foam mattress in a private A/C bedroom, a sofa-bed in separate living room with over 60 channels of FREE Cable TV, a functioning kitchen with full size stove, oven, fridge, microwave, coffee maker, electric tea kettle, toaster, water cooler w/5 Gals of fresh FREE water provided, FREE Wifi, a balcony overlooking the Caribbean Sea with 2 outdoor chairs. There are 5 restaurants within 1-2 blocks of the beach house (including a take out restaurant with plenty of food for less than $5 US) and a couple mini-marts.
If you want peace and quiet avoid this unit!
We stayed in this home last week. While the home itself was comfortable and clean and actually better than pictured, the outdoor space was horrific. This home is sandwiched between a youth hostel and a modern building that are less than 2 feet away. No privacy whatsoever. The downstairs tenant had noisy unsupervised children and constant comings and going's. All we wanted to do was sit and relax enjoy the beautiful view and that just was not an option. Would not recommend staying
We'd like to thank our guests - who stayed 2 nights with us - for complimenting the accommodations.
Like most Caribbean islands with an abundance of opportunities for outdoor activities - snorkeling, scuba diving, swimming, kayaking, paddle-boarding, windsurfing, bike riding, the Split and other outdoor restaurants & beach bars - residents and visitors alike typically relish the outdoor island lifestyle Caye Caulker offers.
As comfortable as our accommodations may be, we are confident that had our guests not gotten ill on their 2nd day they, too, would have been outdoors, laughing and having a good time, too busy soaking up island life and partaking of the treasure throve of activities available to concern themselves with the comings and goings of anyone else (especially between the hours of 2-5 PM). When you're on an island for only 2 days and you are both sick for one of those two days....it can't be much fun.
We do hope that our guests are feeling much better and that they return to Caye Caulker in the near future for a re-do. As most visitors can attest "Caye Caulker grows on you." While here, remember to Go Slow. Everything's gonna be alright...
