Good for a small group
I thought this place was nice. It was a little further to Elk than it read in the reviews...about 30 minutes. It was quiet and in a beautiful area. We did have some issues with cleanliness. The shams and comforters had hair on them. We removed them to sleep. The owners were responsive and helpful.
Very nice experience, the homeowners are very kind and the house had everything we needed.
Nice area, only a 20 minute drive to Elk Ski Resort. Ownwers were very informative of the area. Very cozy place with plenty of room for a small family. We really enjoyed our stay.
I come here every summer with my children to go fishing and swimming at a nearby lake. The owners are very friendly and accommodating. I have never had any problems and the house is very clean.
Comfortable accommodations overall
Pro's : The carriage house was in good order, the kitchen is well stocked, and it was very clean and orderly overall. The AC is in good working order and keeps the main space well cooled. The bedrooms were warmer, but we did not run the AC most of the day. Lots of seating, and plenty of space for a decent size group to sleep. Plenty of pillows and linens were provided. The kitchen is quite large and easy to cook in, and the fridge is full sized. There is also a washer and dryer as well as a dishwasher. The living room is large and a nice size for the family to hang out together.
Cons: The ceilings are quite low and slanted in most rooms, so if you are very tall this may present a problem, however it did not bother us. The Queen bed is VERY firm, the other beds have mattress toppers and we switched to those beds instead as they much more fit our preferences. If you like a really firm mattress that may work for you. The couch in the living room is quite honestly uncomfortable, and in need of upgrading as the backing has lost all support and you can feel the wooden frame. The bathroom while otherwise in great order did not have any hand soap. (I imagine this was a minor oversight). There were a great number of air fresheners around the home to keep things fresh which would probably have been lovely if I weren't allergic to fragrance. If you have a sensitivity you may need to, like I did, go through and stash them away for your stay.
Overall: I would certainly recommend this carriage house to others, and I would definitely be willing to stay again.
Don't make the mistake I made!
This review is for the people who may be thinking the same way I was and hoping they can learn from my experiences. This is not intended to attack the owners or their views, but I'll talk about difference in views, my thoughts on interacting with them, and try to give a fair review on the house itself. (and I'm sure they will leave comments to justify their positions)
For however long I've been renting houses, I always thought I rent the SPACE which COULD accommodate X number of people. And if I decide to bring additional people, I would be sharing my rented space and we have to manage the sleeping arrangement. It'll be tight, but I sign up for it. That was my thought process. The owners apparently had another view. When I informed them we might have another family staying, they told me they "never allow more than 6 people", but they "can make an exception for additional $xxx" (they demanded to pay double). This "exception" price went down a bit after I negotiated. We were initially 9 people but at the last minute we became a party of 10 (added one niece). At this point, I was still thinking kids can sleep in the living room like a camp out. They would enjoy that. BIG MISTAKE. Upon arrival, owners wanted to know how many we are so I said 10. "TEN? YOU SAID NINE! YOU SAID NINE!!! NO WAY! NOO WAAY!!" He was very aggressive and I just could not communicate with him. I really didn't see what was causing such aggravation because I was still looking from my point of view, renting a space. It's not like I brought 30 people but they acted as if I did.
Maybe to their mind, they were only getting paid for 6 people and having more people should cost more (for the same amount of space). It's their house and their rule so I should respect that. If they were more calm, we probably had a better outcome. But after hearing the screams, my other family decided to go home and kids could not spend time together for our annual event.
The house itself was actually nice. Good space for 6 (3 full size beds), a large living area with a long couch and a futon convertible sofa (ironically it would've been great for kids). And no shoes allowed in the house (all carpeted) which is a plus. They are very quick to respond to emails for questions.
Since the owners live right across, they do look over your shoulders and watch every move you make from their window, which didn't make a good impression. We only stayed a night and went home. It was a hard lesson learned. 6 means 6!
We are glad you like the property, its layout and the prompt response from the owner via email.
The industry standard in vacation rentals is to accurately disclose how many people you intend on bringing. This is why every website asks you to input the number of travelers during the reservation process. The owner may decide to not allow a party that exceeds their maximum occupancy or may request an additional fee for the extra people.
We appologize for the negative experience during your trip and hope future travelers are better.
