Imagine a place that was "brilliantly designed" and "a real gem." Sounds pretty intriguing, right? Well, you'll find that those are the exact words used to describe this vacation rental in France by previous guests who just loved it! Bordering the Dronne River, this self-catering accommodation near Chenaud has a peaceful and pleasant setting in the beautiful countryside.
Incredible, stunning, and lovingly restored, this is just the place to spend the holidays in France! 2.6 hectares (6.4 acres): The chateau was built in the 17th century, with the foundation dating back to 1090. In the 18th and 19th century the chateau was enlarged with 2 more parts. All sections are attached to each other with 3-foot thick walls. The different styles of the various constructions are visible, which lends an attractive rambling aspect to the building. For example, in the 17th century the cellar, now used for wine storage, was the kitchen. The original details are still visible. The property is accessed via a quiet little road that connects two small villages. The graveled courtyard leads to the house, barn and garden. The backyard overlooks the winding Dronne River where there is a dock (4m x 7m) where guests can sit and to enjoy the riverside and the canoes passing by. The large garden is completely private; the north, south and west sides consist of typical large French walls; the river Dronne is on the east side of the property. The south of the property has a splendid view of the 12th century Roman church of Chenaud. There is garden furniture in both sunny and shaded areas of the garden. There are huge 100-year old oak and line trees, as well as apple, peach, cherry, prune and chestnut trees. New plantain trees have been planted. At the far end of the garden is a little pond. This apartment is located in the part of the chateau built in the 18th century. This section has been tastefully decorated with antiques and exquisite fabrics, combined with pieces of modern European art. All bedrooms still have the original fireplaces, but due to safety reasons they are not useable. (275 m2) Ground Floor: One enters the entrance hall with floor tiles and wooden beams from the 17th century. From this hall one can access the living area, a bedroom, and a bathroom with a washing machine and dryer. The living area includes a large fireplace (wood is available for an extra cost), a fully equipped kitchen with a blender, mixer, roaster and other appliances, dining table and comfortable seating close to the fireplace. The decor is a combination of antique and modern art. The bedroom has a king-size bed (or twin-beds, depending upon the preference), 300-year old oak floors, built-in electronic safe, and a small wash basin. The bathroom, separate from the bedroom, has a WC, shower, sink, washing machine and dryer, and radiant floor heating. First Floor: From the hall there is access to the 300-year old staircase to the first floor. From the landing there is a wonderful view over the Dronne River. From here there are three spacious bedrooms. The first bedroom, with a safari theme, has a king-size bed, and an ensuite bathroom with a WC, circle-shaped shower, sink and floor heating. This bedroom also has a built-in electronic safe. The second bedroom, decorated in red, has twin-beds which can be made into a king-size bed upon request, and an ensuite bathroom with WC, shower and sink. There is a built-in electronic safe. The third bedroom has twin-beds which can be made into a king-size bed upon request, and an ensuite bathroom with WC, shower, sink and radiant floor heating. The bedroom has a built-in electronic safe. There is central heating and each radiator can be individually adjusted. Because of the 3-foot wide walls, there is no need for air conditioning, as the walls keep the house quite cool in summer. Extra Services: The following are listed as an aid for trip planning; the services and prices are approximate and cannot be guaranteed by Rentvillas. All extra services are payable locally in cash. Portable Baby Crib: Upon request Firewood: Upon request Please Note: The property is not well suited for handicapped people. Because of the river, children must be watched closely. This villa comes with a welcome basket with: tomato sauce, olive oil, and pasta, fresh fruit, eggs, and corn flakes, various cheeses and local bread, mineral water, orange juice, Coke, milk, coffee, tea, and wine (red and white), sugar, salt, butter, jam, napkins, dishwasher tablets, and toilet paper.

Overall:

We had an absolutely fabulous week there! The owners of the property, Max and Vera, should be proud of themselves!

Enjoyed Most:

The house - absolutely beautiful and very comfortable. The outdoor terrace was a boon - we had all our meals out there. The river frontage was unbelievably beautiful and delightful. It was also very quiet, which we enjoyed.

Surrounding Area:

The surrounding area was delightful and there were many excellent towns to visit - Chalais (where we dined at the Relais du Chateau), Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, St Emilion, Brantome and other towns were very pleasant.

Nearby Events or Locales:

The nearest small town was Chalais - not quite within walking distance, although the village of Chenaud was only a couple of hundred metres away.

Tips or Restaurants:

The outstanding restaurant in the area was the Relais du Chateau in Chalais - outstanding food in a beautiful location at very reasonable prices.

Directions:

We used a GPS, but the directions given were quite sufficient.

Check In Out:

No issues - the owners, Max and Vera, were there when we arrived and bid us farewell when we left.

Overall:

Better than I even expected. It was beautiful and staying there was a real joy.

Enjoyed Most:

Everything from the gracious living room to the fully-equipped kitchen. The information that was made available to us on the area was outstanding, for it gave us all the best tips of places to go and where to eat. Meeting Max and Vera and having the opportunity to get to know them was a plus.

Surrounding Area:

The countryside is beautiful and the surrounding little towns are very charming. The area has a wonderful topography and the waterfall in the river was so enjoyable to hear.

Nearby Events or Locales:

Chenaud is the closest town and walking to the Mairie is easy.

Tips or Restaurants:

Sit back and enjoy the property and take Max and Vera's tips on restaurants and market towns. I would not miss Saint Emilion and lunch on the patio of Hotel de Plaissance.

Directions:

We used a GPS to find our way to the property and would suggest if you are driving in France do not leave home without one.

Check In Out:

Check in and out was very easy. We were late arriving at the Chateau, so we communicated this to Max. He had the lights on in the Chateau and the beautiful blue iron gates opened for us.

Overall:

We are enchanted with this property. It is beautifully decorated with a mix of country French antiques and modern amenities. The living area is spacious and welcoming. The bedrooms are beautiful. The owners were there during our visit and were so warm, welcoming and delightful. The owners made us feel like this was home during our stay. We were there for two weeks.

Enjoyed Most:

Without a doubt the beauty of the interiors and the exterior property are like something out of a movie. It is peaceful, quiet and charming.

Enjoyed Least:

The location is a bit remote. So it took us a while to find our way around. You MUST have a car and a GPS.

Surrounding Area:

If you are interested in French wine country this property is ideally situated. We visited wine Chateaux in Castillon, St. Emillion and Bordeaux. The owners also had a wonderful book outlining the best restaurants and towns to visit. Hiring a guide is highly recommended. They can be found online. We were lucky to have a referral for a guide from some friends who had been to the region previously.

Nearby Events or Locales:

The nearest small village (and I do mean small) is within walking distance. However, to shop for groceries, get gas, or dine out you must have a car.

Tips or Restaurants:

The chateau is wonderfully stocked so there is really nothing you must bring other than comfortable clothes and walking shoes. There was little other than groceries that we needed to buy. A GPS and car are a must. We found marvelous restaurants and never had anything but fabulous meals. The French know how to eat, even at the little cafes. Our favorite place was Le Relais du Chateau in Challais. We ate there twice. The owner is charming, speaks very good English and the food was to die for at a very affordable price. This place is a must. One thing that would be very helpful is to brush up on your French. The people were lovely and welcoming. But we found ourselves in a number of situations where no one spoke English. We managed to communicate with some of our group having some basic French vocabulary. But speaking the language would have been a real asset. This is not the big city of Paris where many speak English.

Directions:

We did use a GPS and still got lost in the beginning. Part of the problem is that the satellite reception can be sporadic. A HOT SPOT on a smartphone saved the day a number of times.

Overall:

This is a beautiful property in the beautiful French countryside. The grounds are very spacious and there is access to the river. The house is situated on a quiet country road. The owners went out of their way to make our stay comfortable and to ensure that we had everything we needed.

Enjoyed Most:

Vera, the owner, is an interior decorator and you can see her creative touch throughout the house. Each room is beautifully decorated, with many original ideas. We liked the themes of each bedroom and found the living room to be an excellent family gathering place. Unlike many rentals, the kitchen here had all the implements one would need to do some serious cooking. Obviously the owners like good food!

Enjoyed Least:

The only drawback about this property is that it is a little isolated. There are no big towns nearby, so most days our excursions took about two hours to reach various points of interest.

Surrounding Area:

Beautiful countryside, quiet roads, a slow pace.

Nearby Events or Locales:

St. Aulaye. Not really within walking distance.
