Elegant home with an unforgettable ocean view.

  • 5 de 5

Prior reviewers have covered a lot and I agree with their comments so I'll cover some other aspects.

My wife and I spent a week here with another couple and we all hated to leave. The pictures of the interior really don't do it justice; it's a most attractive and comfortable living space. Full-size and fully equipped kitchen - take advantage of the KTA and Safeway over in Hilo and dine on fresh fish and local produce. The upstairs suite has a full glass front and opens onto the lanai; the downstairs front room opens onto a covered patio and has essentially the same view.

No a/c, but it isn't needed. Nights are cool and there are plenty of doors and vented windows to let in the breezes by day.

The pictures de-emphasize the phone and power lines that run in front of the house. First, you won't notice them after a while, and second, this is pretty typical for houses on the old coast road. The new Mamalahoa Highway runs behind the house, but it's up the hill where you can't really hear it - but it's very convenient. It's about a half-hour to Hilo for supplies and such at KTA, Safeway (cheap gas!), Walmart, Macy's, etc. and enjoy a fine meal at the Pesto Cafe. About as far west is Waimea, with the huge Parker Ranch. Be sure to check out the Parker Ranch Store, highly-rated Village Burger and Big Island Brewhaus. Merriman's is highly-touted for fine dining featuring local ingredients, but very pricey. There is also a KTA and a Foodland so you can pick up supplies.

About halfway to Waipio, Honoka'a is a charming little town with a number of galleries, shops and antique stores. There's a small supermarket and Cafe Il Mondo has great pizza and calzones.

Finally, don't overlook Laupahoehoe itself. The name means "Shelf of Lava" and that's what it is. The town used to be right there by the ocean, but a tsunami wiped it out in 1946 (see the monument) and now the town is further up the hill. There's a nice little park at the shore now and is a great place to have a picnic and maybe grill some fish or burgers.

Spending Precious Time in Paradise

  • 5 de 5

I'm a little late posting my review. My wife and I spent a week at the Laupahoehoe house four months ago, but there's almost not a day I do not think of our time there, and reflect on the beauty and calm and spiritual presence of this place, perched on the cliffs above Laupahoehoe peninsula. The great Pacific Ocean spreads out for miles and miles to the east and north. Red cardinals and mynah birds frolic in the trees. The sound of the ocean itself rises out of the sea and through the many windows, over the copious deck, and into the comfortable living quarters.

The owner, Dave, has done a great job providing for the house, and it is an architectural marvel. Dave was helpful, friendly, available, but unobtrusive.

This house is in God's country. The town of Laupahoehoe is minimal. The closest town of any significance is Honoka'a (don't miss the malasadas at Tex's), 15 minutes to the North, while Hilo is about a half-hour to the South. It took approximately an hour to reach the beaches and resorts on the leeward side of the island (worth it alone for dinner at the Lava Lava Beach Club). Volcano National Park is about an hour to the south. The drives there and back are spectacular. This is not a place you want to go without a car.

But you may not want to leave this place. It's calm and beauty is healing and relaxing. It will remind you that there are places of exquisite perfection in the world, where nature picks you up and repairs the weary soul.

The house itself is comfortable, with three bedrooms (nice beds), three bathrooms, and privacy via upstairs and downstairs sections. The kitchen was fun to cook in. There's no air conditioning, but we never needed it.

I can't recommend this place enough. I must admit part of the reason it took so long to post this was a fear that it would get booked more, become more expensive, and someday be unavailable to me when I wished to return. But I owe it to Dave and his special house to tell others about it. One must give back to the beauty of the world, and not hoard it.

Mahalo!

Very relaxing and comfortable place

  • 5 de 5

We had a very pleasant time at this house overlooking the Laupahoehoe Point. Everything about the place was ideal... location was great (far enough from Hilo, but close enough), views and weather were perfect, has a complete kitchen, wireless internet (that was a pleasant surprise), cable TV, comfortable bedrooms, a really sweet lanai overlooking the ocean. The little park down at the point has an interesting history and a dynamic relationship with the ocean.

We made day-trips to the volcano, to the numerous waterfalls nearby, and to several beaches and local parks.

We made dinner each night in the kitchen, and we felt right at home. I would highly recommend this place to families who are looking to avoid the expense and general hassle of hotel-living.

Beautiful Home, perfect location!

  • 5 de 5

My husband and our 3 young adult children loved this home. We were blessed to be able to call this place home during the 2 1/2 weeks we were on the Big Island. The pictures on the website do not do it justice. The home was well maintained and clean. The bed comfortable, and the linens of excellent quality. The kitchen, bathrooms and laundry room were all well-stocked with everything we needed. The only thing lacking was a dishwasher. More than enough room for all of us.

The view is incredible. We checked "the point" first thing every morning with our first cup of coffee on the large lanai. Our first morning there was a beautiful rainbow just off the coast. This was just the first of many that we enjoyed. The sliding glass doors and windows really let you enjoy the view from any room. Simply beautiful!

The location is excellent. Only 1/2 hour drive to Hilo and about the same to Waimea. The Kona side and sandy beaches only 1 1/2 hours from home. The town of Laupahoehoe was just up the road and is charming. The Minit Stop has very competitive gas prices. The 50's Diner is a must! Great food and good prices. We always left stuffed and with a carry-out box. The portions are huge! The Hamakua Baptist Church is a wonderful place to worship. The people there felt like family after the 3 Sundays we attended. The train museum was very interesting. Laupahoehoe Point will always be one of our favorite spots. The ever-changing waves against the rocks is mesmerizing.

We also enjoyed falling asleep to the sound of the waves crashing against the cliff below the house. With the windows open, there is quite a bit of road noise from the road farther up the mountain behind the house. This usually started about 4 A.M. After the 3rd night, we were use to it and were able to tune it out.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this home. I will definitely check to see if it is available next time we come to the Big Island, and would recommend it to family and friends.

A Pacific Paradise

  • 5 de 5

Sept. 19-26th, 2010

Be sure to bring a journal because long after leaving, you will want to relive life as it is here.

My wife and I have practiced Qigong and Tai Chi at various mountains and beaches in many beautiful places but have never felt more power and energy than at this particular spot. Lush vegetation, well manicured grounds, the sea air and cobalt blue sky, all mix with rock outcroppings and surf to generate tremendous life energy.

There were so many attractions we visited in the surrounding area, including Botanical Gardens, a tour of Mauna Kea, the Volcano National Park, tea and coffee plantations and various beaches, museums and waterfalls. These were all within a twenty minute to one hour+ drive.

But, one has to be careful because you leave this place at your own risk. One morning a neighbor shared his excitement and wanted to talk about the 200+ dolphins that were frolicking in the bay the morning before. "Oh no, that was the morning we went to Kona.... what luck!" So, if you do leave, you risk trading one paradise for another.

On top of all this, the house is furnished with everything we needed for our vacation, including a huge lanai beckoning us to stay forever. All we had to bring was our carry-on luggage.

Oh, and don't miss the time machine called the "Fifties Diner" - it's a hoot and the folks who run it know how to make you feel welcome.
