Fantastic week in a beautiful part of France

  • 5 de 5

We are just back from a week in La Bergerie, as a family of four (our daughters are 8 & 5) the place was perfect for us. The house was much bigger than we expected and had everything, literally everything, we needed, imagine having your own holiday home in the Dordogne and you are there. The pool was fantastic and great for children young and old and the surrounding area was beautiful. Evenings were spent watching the children play in the fields whilst the sun set over the hills (with a glass or two of the regional wine). The place is so quiet, absolutely no traffic noise, it does feel like you are in the middle of nowhere, yet you are only 5 minutes from the small town of Beaumont, 25 minutes from Bergerac and the Dordodge itself is just up the road. I recommend a canoe trip on the Dordogne, starting from Limeuil, again only a short drive away. Our hosts Joan and Sam were fantastic, always around to say hi and it was great to get to know them a little. We have stayed in holiday rentals before and have always had a great time, yet this time it felt different, both Joan and Sam really made us feel like it was our home for the week and nothing was too much trouble - this really made the difference for us. Whilst there, our eldest daughter celebrated her birthday, a small gift from Joan and Sam really wasn't expected, it made our daughter's day and again tells you a lot about the people you are staying with! The house is next door is called "the big house" and it is huge! Two families were staying there, again, they were lovely and helped build some special holiday memories. Our one complaint, we should have booked two weeks... we won't make that mistake again as I'm sure we will be seeing La Bergerie again!

The Happiest of Times

  • 5 de 5

It’s delightful here. You’re met at the house by two of the most hospitable, courteous, interesting people you could imagine, Joan and Aune [the ‘Au’ as in ‘now’].

The lovely honey-stone farmhouse has wide views over beautiful countryside. We stayed [for 4 weeks in April 2016] in ‘La Bergerie’, [an independent house that is part of the very long farmhouse], a roomy, homely converted sheep barn, with all facilities [comfortable beds too] including a very efficient wood-burner [plus additional central heating if needed]. As it was April, some of the evenings were cool outside. This was a great month for wild-flowers, cuckoos, and hoopoes. For hot days, there is a large swimming pool to the far side of the farmhouse with plenty of space to relax , enjoy the garden or read, while the house, with its high ceilings, is airy and cool.

We can recommend visits to Beaumont du Perigord, St Avit [nice café], both are walkable from the house, Cadouin, and Monpazier [amongst others]. They’re all built in the local honey-coloured stone, and all are most interesting and beautiful. We had an excellent lunch at ‘bistro 2’ in Monpazier; if you need a hat, go to ‘The Four Cats’ hat-shop there, great choices. And, if you want to see something extraordinary [and I mean that] see the quite exceptional caves at Grotte de Grand Roc. Of course, you don’t have to do anything. We had lovely days relaxing, listening to the birds and watching Joan and Aune working on their land!

There are lovely walks directly from the house, including going directly from the grounds of the property along a randonné, past woods and vineyards, and on to the Chateau de Bannes. Maps can be had in Beaumont’s very helpful Tourist Office and at the Intermarché on the outskirts of Beaumont, where you can also get 24hr fuel for your vehicle [put your credit/debit card first into the machine; the instructions will appear in English as well if needed; enter your PIN and etc].

I used GPS: 44º 47” 29.3 N and 0º 46” 25.6 E for the property itself, and you may find that the turning from the little country road to the side track that leads to the house [an ancient sign shows ‘Cantegrive’], is about 50m further on than your satnav shows.

The wi-fi is very efficient here and the TV has both UK and French programmes.

My wife and I really recommend this delightful place and are very much looking forward to returning later this year.

Gorgeous house with a fantastic pool in the most beautiful and peaceful surroundings.

  • 5 de 5

We travelled to Cantegrive with our two young boys (ages 4 & 6). We couldn't have been happier with our stay. The house is completely lovely with plenty of space and the best equipped kitchen I've ever encountered in a rental property. The pool is amazing (18x8m) and very good for all ages and abilities. The setting is very special, totally secluded and surrounded by meadows and woodland providing complete peace and tranquility. Some great tracks for running too! Close by are lots of beautiful bastide towns to explore and some lovely restaurants if you wish to eat out. The owners of the property could not have been more welcoming and helpful. They went out of their way to provide information about activities in the area and recommending places to visit and eat. They even booked tables for us when our French wasnt up to the job!

We cant recommend this place highly enough. We will definitely be going back!

A Little Bit of Heaven

  • 5 de 5

We have stayed at Cantegrive three times now both with our adult sons and as a couple. Bergerac airport is within easy distance and our holiday starts with lunch in Monpazier, waiting for a text from Joan to let us know that our gite is ready.

The setting could not be better, up on a plateau above a river valley, surrounded by a variety of peaceful countryside where you can watch buzzards soaring above, see hares at dusk in the surrounding meadows or listen to the sound of deer rutting in the distance late into the September evening. The house itself is literally a home from home, everything that you could need and something more, a warm feeling of being somewhere very special. Joan and Sam are a delight, warm and welcoming, there when you need them, but want only that you are able to relax and enjoy their 'little bit of heaven'.

Part of the initial attraction for us, as well as the traditional house and the setting was the huge swimming pool which is kept immaculately clean, with easy steps in and a gentle shallow end for younger children but a wonderful deep section for diving. My personal favourite is a cooling evening swim under the stars. A good spot to be if you are interested in brushing up on your knowledge of the stars as the evening sky is unencumbered by lights.

The garden is beautiful and carefully tended by Sam, a large expanse of lawn as well as huge trees providing welcome shade and the herbs and fresh figs are there for everyone to enjoy. The local area has everything you could need within a short drive and more interesting villages and towns only a little further afield. We too visited the caves and La Roque, they are well worth the trip. Joan has a wealth of knowledge about local eateries-we love one in particular in Lalinde and she has even arranged for a local taxi to get us there and back on my husband's birthday.

This is the place to go if you want a good spot to use as a base to explore though if you just want to relax in pleasurable surroundings you will be hard pressed to find anywhere better, what I love most is sitting outside in the evening, as darkness descends, enjoying a meal and a glass or two...bliss.

Travellers from Down Under

  • 5 de 5

In 2010 we were looking for a place to call home for 3 months in the Peigord region of France and were fortunate enough to hit on 'Cantegrive'. From the moment we arrived we were taking by the idyllic country setting of the large old home - full of character and history. My husband and I had booked the "small house", still big enough to accommodate four people comfortably, fully equipped for all our needs and with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.

Joan and Aune are delightful hosts and their in-depth knowledge of the area, the restaurants and what's on where and when is of invaluable help to those new to the Perigord.

If you are looking for peace and quiet the option is to take walks in the beautiful countryside- through meadows and woods, come home and relax in the large pool, certainly an attraction for young and old.

Sightseeing opportunities are plentiful. Beaumont (about 5 min drive away) is a picturesque, historical bastide town with an impressive fortified church, some interesting galeries and restaurants. It also boasts an Intermarche (supermarket), a doctor, a chemist and, of course, a patisserie and outstanding butcher. A little further afield are Monpazier, Lalinde, Cadouin (lovely abbey). A 'must do' is lunch or dinner at the tiny restaurant in St. Avit-Senieur - truly special. Day trips to the Lascaux Caves or Sarlat are recommended, canoeing down the Dordogne from Vitrac past La Roque-Gageac and Beynac another 'must do'.

Our two daughters, then 24 and 18 years old, were lucky enough to join us for a couple of weeks in 2010 and promptly fell in love with 'Cantegrive', so much so that in May 2014 our whole family and friends met there again to celebrate the engagement of our older daughter.

Joan and Aune are very special people who welcome you, give you the benefit of their extensive local knowledge and always ensure your stay is comfortable. We have to travel a long way (from Australia) to get to 'Cantegrive'. Just writing this is giving me itchy feet: must plan our next trip!
