Labor Day Weekend Getaway
My daughter and I stayed with Tish and David and we had a great experience. The location was easy to find, safe, and close to beautiful beach attractions. Access is very nice and we arrived quite late and there was no problem with that. The hosts were so nice and helpful with local information and very personable. The room was extremely clean and exactly as pictured. The patio area is great and the yard is beautiful. Added bonus were their delightful dogs!
Very comfortable. Beautiful back garden, perfect for reading. Snacks and water waiting for us. Quite quiet - down the road from a fire station so occasional sirens, but that is a " city thing" not an accommodation thing. We would certainly stay there again if we are in the area. Great value for money.
Maybe short term- 1-2 days
We booked for 2 1/2 weeks. Due to a miscommunication we were unable to have our grandchildren-(one at a time-not both,) over the 2 weekends we stayed. The host was highly anxious about their presence even tho it had been cleared before hand. We complied with her request as we did with all the rules but felt on “eggshells” the rest of the time, one time receiving a text about not turning lights off etc- leaving us feeling we were being monitored. Hosts are pretty unwelcoming - never checked in to see how things were going. Never met “David”. (It did get very chilly after we were angrily confronted about “too many guests”- even tho we’re all adults & we quickly complied. ) That being said the place is just ok- it needs to be known that there is NO DOOR on the bathroom which instead is covered by curtains, about two feet from the table where you eat your breakfast! (No privacy! )There is NO handle on the entry door leading you to figure out how to get it open and resulting in no ability to lock it as you leave. Yes there is a security lock on the entry gate to the back yard about 20 yards away but -having been in law enforcement 20 years - not sure that would keep a determined thief out. And you are yards from a busy urban street! The walls are very thin. We like animals but were a little shocked to hear them (4) on one side lapping their water and eating their kibble. The other wall is apparently to the hosts room & you can hear clear sounds (snoring) from there. (So “private” would not be my first descriptor). The other piece that’s really mystifying is that despite being said repeatedly in other reviews, the lighting remains terrible yet a big enough concern that you’ll receive a text if you leave the 30 watt bulb on!! Why wouldn’t you fix that? We’ve stayed many times in California & this is our first negative experience. The hosts strike me as new to this , not so much interested in your comfort but theirs & just don’t know what’s acceptable & what is not-for cooperative, paying guests.
Susan made an inquiry in Jan. 2019. After placing the reservation, she sent me an email stating she had read our policy on no children. She said, "I was hoping that my 2 grandchildren, ages 5 & 7 could stay overnight one at a time most likely a Fri or Sat and asked if it would be possible. As a courtesy, I felt that 1 child at a time would be acceptable and granted the request.
The next day around 4:30pm Susan brought her grandchildren to the property and they stayed through Mon around 11:30am.
On Sun, mid day it became very loud as the children were yelling & running on the hardwood floors. Unfortunately, I was not feeling well. After several hours, I texted Susan and let her know that the children would need to quiet down as it was becoming disruptive. He response was NOT of apology but yet "we will be more mindful." The children appeared back again on Wed. afternoon although it was for only about 30 min it was so loud that I had to end my conference call quickly as it was so difficult to hear. That Friday shortly after 8:30pm, I heard children's voices again. At that point, I knew I needed to address the situation. I explained that we had an agreement regarding the children's visits and to keep in mind that it is also a liability. The reservation was for 2 adults. I reminded her that I extended a "special" courtesy to her. She was clearly aware of our policy.
There are many pics posted of the suite, if it was not suitable I am unclear as to why she would book a long stay. As a courtesy we ask our guests to be careful and to make sure all gates are closed as we have animals. This rule was NOT followed which showed no regard for us or our animals. Why would one choose a property with dogs if they do not like them? The few times she encountered them in the yard she shoo them away.
We have impeccable reviews and guests have found this room to be relaxing, quiet & nicely decorated. It overlooks a beautiful patio, lush garden and lots of seating. After 4-5 visits from their grandchildren, it is apparent that they were unhappy when we reiterated our policy and house rules. My suggestion in the futures is consider renting an entire house/bungalow that allows addt'l guests and is better suited for entertaining. Also, if you have any reservations about animals (dogs in particular) this may not be the right property. Our senior dogs are extremely quiet but if hearing a dog drink water is upsetting this clearly is not the right fit.
Would be happy to go back there again!
Before we got there, when we got our confirming message from Tish, I eagerly looked forward to this. When we arrived, Tish -- and her Aunt Rachel who was there, too -- were so welcoming. Such a warm and friendly reception. They made me feel right at home. It's a charming studio. Just one thing. The room could use a lamp on the table at the front for when you walk in at night, rather than going to the middle of the room for the light switch. The snacks on the shelf and in the refrigerator were a treat. Along with the microwave, you're all set. This is a nice place for dog lovers, too!
Let us know when you come back to Cali..we have placed a light next to the couch as you suggested. It was a pleasure hosting you and I loved hearing Frank's stories.
A nice room with a private entrance. It was immaculately clean and had a great shower and bed.
Tish has added a nice room to her home. I travel extensively and always look for cleanliness, a firm bed, and strong shower. This room had all three. The amenities added, such as coffee, fruit, and snacks were a nice touch.
The only reason I didn’t give a score of 5 was that the lighting in the room could’ve been better. I think higher wattage bulbs might do the trick. Private parking is also not available. For me these were the only negatives.
The room served my needs nicely as I was visiting relatives 15 minutes away. I would definitely recommend it for a single traveler or a couple visiting Los Angeles. I made several trips to LA and always made it under 30 minutes.
A postscript: I left clothing behind (in a senior moment) and Tish contacted me to pick it up at my convenience. This was greatly appreciated!!! The best recommendation I can give is that I would definitely stay there again.
Thank you so much Jim we look forward to you staying with us again.
