Great little cottage in a beautiful location
We had a short stay at the cottage and enjoyed the beautiful views and cozy feel of the rental. It has all the comforts of home and would be great for a family to enjoy a some time exploring the local islands. The nearby beach is rocky and you can access the water at high tide (too slippery at low tide) or take a short drive to a sandy beach on Bailey Island. If you want to cook, there is plenty of gear for that, or you can walk down the street to the Salt Cod Cafe for breakfast and lunch. There are also other seafood restaurants a longer walk or quick drive away. Two of the bedrooms adjoin the upstairs deck, which has amazing views of the ocean and is perfect for enjoying your morning coffee or an evening drink. The bed in the master has a view of the ocean and you can leave the sliding door open for a cool ocean breeze and sounds of the surf. For a small cottage, it really feels spacious and not cramped at all. Two things to note - the Bunk Bed room is a walk through to the room with the Full bed, which may be an issue if you are traveling with small kids that need to go to bed earlier than the rest of the group. You can also access the Full bed room through the Master bedroom via the deck, but either way you have to go through another room to get there. Also I would not recommend this rental for a family with toddlers, as the staircase is open on one side. Our 3.5 year old was fine, but if we had come last summer or earlier I would have been very nervous.
Small, but she has all the amenities.
Love that it's ocean view from your room. Ocean so close where you could fish or swim. 4 days of rain, we couldn't dry our clothes in clothesline, so bring extra clothes if the rain is in the forecast. Also we loved that Lobster pound was so close, walking distance from our rental. We had fun.
The cottage has a lovely view and good amenities. It was nice to see that there were some necessities stocked for guests convenience such as dish soap, paper towels and toilet paper, easily forgotten things when doing Island rentals. They even had a basket of new toothbrushes and toothpaste in case you forgot yours! It was a perfect size for us and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! I would have given it 5 stars however the road from the cottage that enters the main road, has very poor visibility of oncoming vehicles. A larger SUV or truck would be able see over the bushes that block the road view. Not sure if anything can be done about that. We'll rent there again and again!
My family used to live in Harpswell so I am very familiar with this area. This home is a traditional summer cottage that is common to the Bailey Island peninsula. Our requirements for a rental home in this area are pretty simple-walking distance to beach, water view and equipment to cook lobster and steamers. On this front, the home meets and exceeds all requirements. It is walking distance to the Cribstone Bridge and Cook's Lobster House and has great Eastern Views of Casco Bay. There is a small private pebble beach within walking distance-not great for swimming at low tide, but still great for beach combing and definitely swimmable at higher tides. You can manage here on foot/bike and not even use your car if needed.
A brand new propane stove was installed during our stay which was a nice upgrade over the existing electric range esp. since it boiled the lobster/steamer pot much faster. House is well equipped and also includes a propane grill.
Two final things to note-the only drinkable tap water is from a specific kitchen faucet. This tap water issue is common on these islands because they are all granite ledge which challenges wells and septic system. Water can still be used for cooking; just bring along bottled water for drinking or use the special faucet. House is in a cell coverage dead spot, but there is cellular connectivity if you walk 5 minutes out to Rte 24. There is satellite-based Wifi at house which worked fine for us even with multiple family members using at once. House also has landline which is helpful if people need to contact you as they can just call the house. I would suggest bringing sweatshirts-even in summer time, there is almost always a breeze and the evenings (which are the best time of day in this area) can still be chilly when seated on the porch.
Owner Lisa is very responsive and helpful.and really helped us enjoy our time in this special part of Maine. We hope to return here again!
