Our stay at Solsidan exceeded our expectations in every way. If you are looking for an authentic Maine cottage in a quintessentially Maine location, you would be hard pressed to find one better than this.
We are a family of four (two adults, two small kids), and when my in-laws showed up for a two-night visit halfway through the week, we still had plenty of room to host them. My five-year-old son took what I thought was the best room in the house, a second floor bedroom with a huge circular window overlooking the bay, but really, there isn't a bad view in the cottage. The ocean is everywhere.
We found the house well stocked with pots, pans, dishes, cups, linens, towels, matches, firewood, books, puzzles — pretty much everything you could want. The appliances were nice and well-maintained. There was even a vase of fresh-cut flowers on the table in the sun room. And if you need / want it, the internet is surprisingly fast.
During our stay, we ate every meal on the oversized back porch. We also took full advantage of the charcoal grill, outdoor shower, hammock, fire pit, and kayak. There are too many memories to share, but one stands out: During an amazing paddle, my son and I were (maybe) 500 yards from the house when we spotted a bald eagle pinwheeling overhead. While we still were marveling at our good luck, two porpoises surfaced just off our bow. It was hard to know where to look. I don't typically use words like magical, but it was magical.
A bit of heaven on an island in Maine
Well, to start out, the weather was perfect and there's nothing better than warm, sunny days to enhance a stay on an island in Maine! As for the cottage itself, it's the absolutely perfect, classic rustic Maine coastal cottage that we were looking for. It couldn't have been a better choice for my family.
Everything necessary for a wonderful stay is provided. The kitchen had all needed appliances, pots and utensils for cooking from lobster to toast. Thanks for having a blender and toaster oven. And coffee maker! Having morning coffee either on the porch outside or in the light-filled dining nook was delightful. The beds are comfortable - sheets, blankets and towels more than adequate for our stay. The wood stove and plentiful supply of wood made chilly nights inviting, as does the outdoor fire pit - perfect for roasting marshmallows.
On a side note, we were there over Labor Day weekend. There are two markets on the island, and it's best to note their hours as they are the only option for buying food. Plan on cooking at home! The Community Center does have a wonderful bakery, Friday night dinners and daily lunch offerings, but do check seasonal operations. The food truck at the ferry isn't open after Labor Day. Our neighbors next door arrived on Saturday afternoon, and needed to hustle to provision their stay as markets are closed on Sunday - and Labor Day Monday!
We did have one gray day. That made the board games and books available a God send!
The cottage was perfect for us! And as delightful as the cottage is, it is the combination with the setting that made for the quintessential Maine experience. We spent hours on the (rocky) beach at the front steps and thoroughly enjoyed the use of the double kayak. And were excited to see an eagle and many herons.
Hillary couldn't have been more attentive to our questions. This was the perfect stay.
A little piece of heaven on earth
Waking up every day to quiet; enjoying beautiful sunrises while enjoying morning coffee. Does it get any better? The well equipped kitchen afforded us the opportunity to prepare great food and enjoy all of it on the lovely dinner plates that adorned our table decorated with fresh flowers cut from the garden ... Solsidan was everything it promised to be! Mother Nature treated us to great weather and e enjoyed a bonfire every night. Some great discussions and good decisions have been made around that fire. S'more time would be nice!
beautiful home on quiet Maine island
We had a wonderful time in Hillary & David's gorgeous Islesboro house. The weather was cold and rainy for the first few days, but even that was lovely: we read books, did puzzles, and enjoyed the warm wood stove. Once the sun came out we spent our time on the beaches and exploring the island. It was a really special week for our family. The house has so much warmth and character. We're very grateful to have had the chance to spend a week there.
Wonderful location, something special
Our first time on Islesboro and we couldn't have found a nicer location or a more comfortable cottage. Situated on a cove (the front) with a beach behind make for great beach walks and spectacular views (bald eagles, herons). We thought we would be taking the ferry back to the mainland a couple of times, but only did once because we couldn't break away from the views. Comfortable sofas, beds and the kitchen (thank heavens for sharp knives!) was good for cooking and that was good because we found that there really isn't anywhere to eat out in Islesboro - at least not in Sept. Ok with us - we like to cook and the local seafood (Island Market) was as fresh as! We went to a small farmer's market at The Abbey - great produce and homemade cakes and breads. Lots of books and games and the owners were responsive and really good to get to know. Enjoyed fires in the fire pit as well as inside in the wood stove (a couple of cold nights!) and the double kayak (teamwork teamwork). We really enjoyed our stay - it did feel somehow magical.
Definitely making this place our annual go to!
We can't wait to sit again and daydream in this quiet sunlit yard that calls your attention to every bit of Nature's magic whether it be viewing sunrise, moonrise, or tides from the bedroom or front yard beach. Many cozy nooks inside and out fill the senses with color, comfort, as well as a feeling of spaciousness and charm. The simple architecture makes you smile with appreciation at every turn. See breezes fill the cottage with freshness of the outdoors. Quality linens, pillows, and blankets make sleeping a dream. No worries if it rains! You can enjoy sunroom dining beside a well stocked kitchen making it fun to cook at home - even on the picture perfect day. Solsidan hums with the peace, comfort, beauty, and ease so wonderfully created by the attentive owners.
