An amazing Cape Cod experience!
This is a wonderful place if you want a real sense of Cape Cod's beauty, serenity, and coziness. We stayed for a week and cannot describe the amazing views across the bay, the sunsets, and the incredible sense of peace, tranquility and rest it gave us. The house is high above the beach and the beach itself was almost empty and very peaceful, with a few strollers walking by. We were there early in the season but doubt it gets really crowded even in August. The place has real Cape charm, does not feel like some high end condo that could be anywhere. Very easy to drive to Provincetown for an evening out or to bike along the shore route. The owner was welcoming and the place felt homey and comfortable. Nothing was lacking. Highly recommended! Will be coming back soon.
Just OK - Property Wasn't Ready For Our Arrival
We had a great vacation on the Cape, and this location is fabulous, but the experience wasn't what we had hoped for. Despite being in contact with the owner just a few days before our arrival date, we entered the property to find a mess on the kitchen table, dirty dishes in the kitchen sink, and something soaking in the bathtub. Phone calls and emails to the owner produced nothing. Not knowing how clean - or dirty - the place really was, we decided to find other lodging for the night and see what could be done in the morning. We finally got a call back the next morning, and by noon the place had been cleaned and we were in. No offer by the owner to reimburse us for the first night in a hotel. The cleaning person actually gave us some money, which partially offset our 1st night expense.
Once in, the cottage was OK. Smaller than we imagined. TV didn't work. BBQ hadn't been used in years and we weren't about to be the first to do so.
The location was fabulous, and we enjoyed going into Provincetown for meals, tours, people watching, etc., and then retreating to the quiet of North Truro. The view from the upstairs room and deck were fabulous, as was the almost private beach, which seemed to go for miles in each direction.
I am very sorry that these guests found some small items out of place when they entered the house. The entrance is through the kitchen, and I, myself, while working on the house, had left behind a paper pad, three welcome letters not squarely on table, two empty but unwashed left over containers in the sink, giving my guests the impression that the house wasn't ready. I'd also left a pair of cafe curtains soaking in a little bleach water in the claw foot tub of one bath -- I'm fussy about my white things actually being WHITE! I'm not sure the guests went far enough into the house to see that.
Simply put,the cleaning service goofed. The service owner forgot to check the house one last time before guests arrived. This is her job,she is good at it. I'd seen her the day before to remind her. This is the first time she has done this. She recently lost her father, so she's been little distracted this Spring. She had a temperature over 100 and went to bed without her phone. It is rare indeed that she is away from her phone!
Nevertheless, it was a mistake with big ramifications; we have gone over this and made arrangements so that it won't happen again.
Ironically, beyond the little mess I'd left when I rushed back to Boston, the house had been throughly cleaned for them -- immaculate and perfectly arranged, from pillows to towel groupings. I'd done that myself, something a cleaning service does not do. Yes,in hindsight, wish I'd just washed the left over containers!
I understand how important that first impression is to my guests. In fact, I personally attend to turn overs on Saturday all summer long, with rare exceptions, so that I can catch any mistakes or oversights, and so that I can add special touches to make the cottage warm and welcoming. I designed and ran the building of the house, I love it, I want my guests to love it, too. Generally they do!
The rest of the review surprised me. I did not know that the guests were unhappy with what the cleaning person paid them; she told me she had reimbursed the guests. They insisted all was fine and they were delighted with the house when we talked.
I regret the house felt too small for them. I describe it as tiny and efficient, I'll continue to do that. These guests could have rented my larger cottage, but they chose the smaller.
I wish they'd mentioned grilling. don't bring new ones out in mid-May
I've taken the review to heart, I'm learning from mistakes. I'm happy they had a great vacation.
